The ultrastructure of male copulatory organs having a stylet has been studied in some genera of the Proseriata. Within the Monocelididae there was a variety of stylet-like hard structures. The stylet in <i>Monocelis fusca</i> was a differentiation of the basement membrane of the epithelium lining a penis-like muscular papilla. The penis papilla in <i>Ectocotyla</i>consisted of circular muscles surrounded by a thickened basement membrane and an epithelium. <i>Archilopsis sp.</i> and <i>Archilina sp.</i> with a duplex copulatory bulb, had a stylet within a spiny cirrus. The stylet structure in <i>Archilina sp.</i> was composed of four long spines which were derivatives of the basement membrane.... |

Possible evolutionary trends within Polycystididae have been indicated by Karling (1956) while studying the male genital organs of seyeral turbellarian groups. For the moment his ideas seem the most valuable basis for establishing an intrafamiliar system of Polycystididae, and have hence been applied formally (Schockaert, 1974). However, it can be demonstrated with several examples that the underlying principles prove to be unsatisfactory when one tries to apply Hennig's methodology:-the subfamily Duplacrorhynchinae Schockaert & Karling, 1970, can be recognized as containing the most plesimorph polycystidids; a synapomorph character that would give us an indication of the monophyly of this taxon is lacking;-the homology of some glandular elements (al!... |

Recent data and opinions on meiofaunal ecology are briefly reviewed; and from scattered data, the place of turbellarians in the meiobenthic community is discussed. Turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude higher in sandy habitats than in muddy bottoms. In sand, turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude as that of other important meiofaunal taxa, while densities range between 7-25% of the total meiofauna. Mean individual turbellarian dry weight seems to be four times that of nematodes and in sandy habitats turbellarian biomass may be equal to or exceed that of nematodes. Most turbellarian species may be considered as predators and in this respect may take the place occupied by macrofaunal species in muddy sediments. |

Three different extraction methods for Turbellaria were compared, 2 of which use living material. The first method is based on sea-water ice treatment (Uhlig-method), the second employs decantation of narcotized fauna (MgCl2-method). The third method is the Barnett-method, performed on preserved material. Three series of 12 samples each were analysed quantitatively. Turbellaria were counted and identified to the order level. For the turbellarian population as a whole, the numbers of individuals extracted alive (Uhlig- or MgCl2-method) was less than 50% of the number extracted from the preserved samples (Barnett-method). Differences between Uhlig-method and MgCl2-method were not... |
