Freeze tolerance differs between two ecotypes of Paspalum vaginatum (Poaceae) Acta Botanica
Fabbri,Liliana Teresa; Ploschuk,Edmundo Leonardo; López,María Virginia; Insausti,Pedro; Rua,Gabriel Hugo.
Morphological and physiological responses to freezing were evaluated in two ecotypes of the perennial turfgrass Paspalum vaginatum. Leaf extension rate, number of active meristems, leaf water potential and net photosynthesis were measured on plants of both a commercial cultivar, 'Sea Isle 2000', and a wild ecotype from the Flooding Pampa grasslands of Argentina. Plants were propagated by cloning, cultivated in pots, and examined during 18 consecutive days under two treatments: a non-frozen control treatment (15.5±7 ºC) and a frozen treatment with two stages: Stage 1 with four hours of freezing stress for 10 nights (-5ºC), and Stage 2 with 12 hours of freezing stress for eight nights (five nights at -5ºC and three nights at -8ºC). After these treatments,...

Dieback foliar y podredumbre seca de grama bahiana ocasionados por Curvularia lunata en Argentina: (con 4 figuras) Phyton
Palmucci,Hemilse E; Amat,Graciela.

Glyphosate as Growth Regulator for Bahiagrass and Broadleaf Carpetgrass Planta Daninha
DIAS,R.C.; DADAZIO,T.S.; TROPALDI,L.; CARBONARI,C.A.; VELINI,E.D..
ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of glyphosate herbicide as growth regulator on two turfgrasses bahiagrass and broadleaf carpetgrass. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, using a completely randomized design, with 10 glyphosate rates (0, 5.625, 11.25, 22.5, 45, 90, 180, 360, 720, and 1.440 g a.e. ha-1) and four replicates. Bahiagrass and broadleaf carpetgrass plants were transplanted to 2 liter pots filled with a clayey soil. Phytotoxicity and green cover index (GCI) were evaluated through digital analysis; plant height at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after application (DAA); and dry biomass of cuttings at 28 DAA. The glyphosate rates of 5.625 to 22.5 g a.e. ha-1 (for bahiagrass) and up to 90 g a.e. ha-1 (for broadleaf...

The Green Industry Today - Some Issues and Future Prospects AgEcon
Johnson, Doyle C.; Christensen, Robert L..
Green industry sales are projected to total $40.4 billion in 1994. The industry ranked sixth in 1991 among farm commodity groups in total cash receipts, and over the past decade total receipts increased 10 percent per year. Net income per farm is the highest of all the commodity groups. Nevertheless, the sector has received scant federal support compared to other commodities. In spite of growth and significance, economic analysis and data availability and reliability have been limited. There is clear justification for increased efforts in data collection and economic analysis of this industry’s problems.

Competitive Relationship of Three Warm-Season Turfgrass Species AgEcon
Adrian, John L., Jr.; Duffy, Patricia A.; Lloyd, Michael.
The competitive position of three warm-season turf species commonly grown in the South (bermudagrass, centipedegrass, and zoysiagrass) is evaluated for a farm with 100 acres available to allocate to turfgrass-sod production. A multiperiod linear programming model is used to determine optimal mixes of grasses and resulting net returns for a seven-year planning horizon. Within current observable price ranges, variation in the prices of the different grasses has little impact on the profit-maximizing combination of grasses. Bermudagrass, with the shorter production cycle and positive influence on cash flow, dominates the higher-valued, longer-production-cycle alternative grasses. Availability of initial money capital from internal sources does not alter the...
