Taxonomy and distribution of the Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) raikhonae group (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Purplesis, R..
Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) melanoptera sp. n. is described from southern Europe, where it is widespread. It is closely related to the Central Asian T. (Glaucolepis) raikhonae Puplesis, which is redescribed. Together they form the raikhonae species group. Sinopticula Yang is here synonymized with Glaucolepis Braun, its only species S. sinica Yang is tentatively regarded as closely related, if not conspecific with T. raikhonae. The distribution is mapped. On the basis of recent Chinese findings the larvae are assumed to be gall-makers on Prunus branches. Some phylogenetic and biogeographic remarks are given.

Overview of international organic market development and potential export markets for organic products of Ukraine Organic Eprints
Schneider, Monika; Richter, Toralf; Spahn, Christoph; Portmann, Katrin.
From the Summar of the Report Production At worldwide level in year 2003 66% of the world’s organic land (total 24 mio ha) are concentrated in two continents: Australia and Latin America. In these regions extensive grazing land is widespread beside the whole game of plant production, from cereals to coffee, tea and other tropical products. In Northern America the organic farmland achieves 1,5 mio ha. Europe has 23 % of the worldwide organic land (5,5 mio ha), these 5,5 mio ha correspond to almost 2% of agricultural land managed organically. Liechtenstein is with 26 % of agricultural area managed organically the leader followed by Aus-tria with 11% and Switzerland with 10%. In most countries the organically managed surface is still increasing. In the...

Ukraine: Country Report Organic Eprints
Prokopchuk, Natalie; Eisenring, Tobias.
The rapid and sustained growth of the international organic trade represents a good opportunity for Ukraine to improve the economic situation of the population in the rural areas and develop the organic sector in Ukraine. During the last years the potential for organic products from Ukraine has not only awakened international buyers, but also stimulated domestic market growth. Ukraine with its 46 million citizens has considerable potential for organic production, processing, trade, and consumption. Currently the assortment of organic products is still very poor. Traders are therefore prompted to import organic products. Ukraine produces mainly organic raw materials for export and the domestic market.

Empirical Analysis of Potential Oligopsony Power and Production Technology in the Ukrainian Milk Processing Industry under Conditions of Economic Transition AgEcon
Perekhozhuk, Oleksandr; Grings, Michael; Glauben, Thomas.
The objective of this study is to provide an empirical analysis of potential market power of the Ukrainian milk processing industry in the market for raw milk. The article is based on the New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) approach and pays special attention to the production technology of the sector. In NEIO studies of market power in the food processing industry the production technology is typically assumed to be of a neoclassical type with simple properties like, e.g., constant returns to scale. Properties of this kind, however, are likely not to prevail in most transition countries of Eastern Europe because of serious distortions in factor usage mainly due to institutional deficiencies. Therefore, the analysis of this study is based on the...

The Determinants of Dairy Farming Competitiveness in Ukraine AgEcon
Nivievskyi, Oleg; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
WTO accession and the expected free trade agreement with the EU pose significant challenges for Ukrainian agriculture, implying structural changes for the sector as well as adaptations at the farm level to improve efficiency and competitiveness. However, a recent study by von Cramon-Taubadel and Nivievskyi [2] demonstrates a clear lack of competitiveness. This directs attention to the forces that drive competitiveness in Ukrainian agriculture. Dairy farming deserves particular attention in this regard, since it is one of the main income generating sources for the rural population, and of raw material supply for the fast growing dairy processing. In this paper at first we analyze the profile of competitiveness of dairy farming in Ukraine, demonstrating that...

INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE IN AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD PRODUCTS: THE CASE OF UKRAINE AgEcon
Luka, Oksana; Levkovych, Inna.
The process of economic transformation in Ukraine is characterized by, among other things, a change in agricultural and food product trading patterns. Ukraine has remained a net exporter of agro-food products, but the total volume and worth, as well as the geographical structure of trade flows, has altered significantly, and further adjustments can be expected to take place in upcoming years. This paper examines Ukrainian agro-food trade, particularly focusing on different aspects of intra-industry trade (IIT), which is usually associated with low adjustment costs. To examine the development of IIT in agro-food products between Ukraine and its trading partners, two approaches are adopted. The Grubel-Lloyd Index is used to calculate the intensity of IIT and...

A Free Trade between Ukraine and the European Union: Challenges and Opportunities for Agricultural Markets AgEcon
Nekhay, Olexandr; Gay, Stephan Hubertus; Fellmann, Thomas.
The negotiations on a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) between Ukraine and the EU are currently in process. Such a FTA can be expected to imply opportunities as well as challenges for agricultural markets. This paper provides a model-based quantitative assessment of the potential impacts of a FTA on agricultural commodity markets in the EU and Ukraine. For the quantitative analysis the dynamic, partial equilibrium model AGLINK-COSIMO has been adapted and applied. The modules for the EU and Ukraine have been extracted from the global model and prepared to run together. Thus, the focus is on the bilateral trade positions and not on the effect on other countries. The simulation of a FTA between the EU and Ukraine was done through the...

Marketing, Cooperatives and Price Heterogeneity: Evidence from the CIS Dairy Sector AgEcon
Sauer, Johannes; Gorton, Matthew; White, John.
Drawing on survey data, this paper identifies the determinants of variations in farm gate milk prices for three CIS countries (Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine). We apply a multi-level modeling approach, specifically a bootstrapped and selectivity bias corrected mixed-effects linear regression model. The analysis suggests three main strategies for farmers to improve the price received for their output: consolidation, cooperation and stable supply chain relationships. While selling through a marketing cooperative has a significant and positive effect on farm gate milk prices, the majority of non-members are reluctant to join. The size of dairy operations, trust and contracting also impact positively on the prices received by farmers. Policy implications are...

OKONOMETRISCHE ANALYSE VON MARKTMACHT AUF DEM UKRAINISCHEN MARKT FUR ROHMILCH AgEcon
Perekhozhuk, Oleksandr; Grings, Michael.

CREATION OF AGRICULTURAL LAND MARKET IN UKRAINE: CURRENT STATE OF DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Melnychuk, Volodymyr; Parchomenko, Sergej; Lissitsa, Alexej.
Land reform started in Ukraine 14 years ago became one of the most important issues in transformation of large state agricultural enterprises into market oriented agricultural enterprises. Significant changes in land use and land ownership has happened as a result of land reform implementation in Ukraine. Namely, state monopoly on land was eliminated, agricultural land was privatized, citizens of Ukraine received land plots in possession, first land transactions have happened at agricultural land market etc. Actual data regarding Ukrainian land relations reformation is systematized in this Discussion paper with especial focus on establishing the prerequisites of further formation and perspective development of the agricultural land market in Ukraine....

Financial constraints in economic transition: Empirical evidence from Ukrainian large farms AgEcon
Zinych, Nataliya; Odening, Martin; Huettel, Silke.
This paper addresses the question of financial constraints in Ukrainian agriculture in transition. The main objective is to reveal the evidence of the both phenomena, soft budget constraints and credit rationing, investigating investment behaviour of large farms in Ukraine. Our empirical analysis is based on unbalanced panel data containing 529 agricultural enterprises from three Ukrainian regions between 2001 and 2005. Estimates of the Euler investment equation for several sub-samples reveal a dissimilar level of financial constraints. We confirm the presence of the soft financial environment (soft budget constraints) for the Ukrainian large farms being in an unconstrained financial regime. The farms belong to this regime if they receive credits after...

CHANGES IN AGRICULTURAL MARKETS IN TRANSITION ECONOMIES AgEcon
Liefert, William M.; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
Economic reform in the transition economies of the former Soviet bloc has transformed the volume and mix of these economies' agricultural production, consumption, and trade. Output drops in most countries have ranged from 25 to 50 percent. The livestock sector has been hit particularly hard, all but eliminating U.S. grain exports to the region. This report concludes that the output decline has been an inevitable part of market reform and that the main goal of agricultural policy in the transition economies should not be to return output to pre-reform levels but to increase the productivity of input use. Although reform has created a food security problem in some countries, the cause of the problem is not insufficient food supplies, but rather inadequate...
