Elastic Properties of Human in Vivo Triceps Brachii Tendon OAK
Murata, Koichiro; Sugisaki, Norihide; Miyamoto, Naokazu; Wakahara, Taku; Kanehisa, Hiroaki; Kawakami, Yasuo; Fukunaga, Tetsuo; 村田, 浩一郎.
This study aimed to determine the elastic properties of human triceps brachii (TB) tendon. The elongation of the TB tendon was directly measured in 9 healthy males using ultrasonography during ramp isometric elbow-extension up to the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The slope of the regression line for the relationship between the estimated muscle force and the angular rotation-corrected tendon elongation above 50%MVC was defined as stiffness. The stiffness of the TB tendon, 83±22 N/mm, was comparable with that of the gastrocnemius tendon reported previously. The relationship between the stiffness and the tendon length (TL) showed a negatively significant correlation, suggesting that the stiffness of TB tendon is influenced by its dimensions.

The applications of timed artificial insemination and timed embryo transfer in reproductive management of dairy cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Ambrose,Divakar Justus; Colazo,Marcos Germán; Kastelic,John Patrick.
Fertility of dairy cattle is generally decreasing. Overall estrus detection efficiency in lactating dairy cattle is low, as expression of estrus is often compromised. Consequently, undetected estrus, low AI-submission rates, and long inter-breeding intervals are the main contributors to poor reproductive efficiency. Although failure to become pregnant is the most common reason for culling dairy cattle, pregnancy rates could be improved by increasing the AI-submission rate through increased estrus detection efficiency, timed insemination (Timed-AI), or timed embryo transfer (Timed-ET). In these protocols, ovarian follicular development and luteolysis are controlled, culminating in synchronous ovulation in most cows. There are several modifications to...

Biometry and ultrasound evaluation of testicles and accessory glands in Santa Ines rams R. Bras. Zootec.
Ribeiro,Mariana da Silva; Quirino,Celia Raquel; Bartholazzi Junior,Aylton; Pacheco,Aline.
ABSTRACT This work aimed to investigate the relationship between echogenicity, testicular biometry, and accessory gland biometry and evaluate the echogenicity pattern of these structures in Santa Ines rams. Fifty-four healthy Santa Ines sheep were classified into three age groups: group 1 - 3 to 5 months (pre-pubertal); group 2 - 7 to 11 months (pubertal); and group 3 - 13 to 28 months (sexually mature). The averages of testicular biometry and bulbourethral gland biometry were different among age groups. The testicular parenchyma was homogeneous with low echogenicity (pre-pubertal group) and medium echogenicity (pubertal and sexually mature groups), suggesting that testicular echogenicity can be a helpful tool to identify the start of puberty. The...

Luteal dynamics in goats: morphological and endocrine features R. Bras. Zootec.
Arashiro,Eduardo Kenji Nunes; Viana,João Henrique Moreira; Fonseca,Jeferson Ferreira da; Camargo,Luiz Sérgio de Almeida; Fernandes,Carlos Antônio de Carvalho; Brandão,Felipe Zandonadi.
The aim of this study was to establish the morphologic and endocrine characteristics of luteal dynamics in goats. It was used Toggenburg female goats that showed natural estrus in a 48-hour interval. After estrus, ultrasonographic evaluations of the ovaries were daily performed during 21 days using a portable device (5MHz probe). Blood sample was collected for plasma progresterone (P4) determination. Corpora lutea were detected for the first time on day 5 and progressively increased in size until D9 (1.26 ± 0.08 cm²), with no variation on subsequent days. In females with one ovulation, the first visualization of the corpora lutea was earlier than in those with multiple ovulation (4.54 ± 0.18 vs 5.74 ± 0.25 days). At the moment of the first visualization,...

Silva,Severiano José Cruz da Rocha e; Jorge,André Mendes; Mourão,José Luís Teixeira de Abreu Medeiros; Guedes,Cristina Vitória de Miranda; Pinheiro,Victor Manuel Carvalho.
Real-time ultrasonography (RTU) was used to measure the longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) volume in vivo and to predict the carcass composition of rabbits. For this, 63 New Zealand White × Californian rabbits with 2093±63 g live weight were used. Animals were scanned between the 6th and 7th lumbar vertebrae using an RTU equipment with a 7.5 MHz probe. Measurements of LM volume were obtianed both in vivo and on carcass. Regression equations were used for the prediction of carcass composition and LM volume using the LM volume measured obtained with RTU (LMVU) as independent variable. Carcass meat, bone and total dissectible fat weights represented 780, 164 and 56 g/kg of the reference carcass weight, respectively. Regression equations showed a strong...

Use of a permanent infusion pump as vacuum generator for ovum pick-up MV&Z
Seneda, Marcelo Marcondes; Rubin, Karina Cristina Puggesi; Blaschi, Wanessa; Lisboa, Lívia Aires; Pontes, José Henrique Fortes.
To disclose an alternative equipment for vacuum generation, which allows for oocyte recovery in quality and quantity compatible with specific vacuum pumps. A continuous infusion pump was employed and aspiration was possible due to the use of the infusion fluid line in the reverse way. The end destined for the infusion bottle was connected to the follicle aspiration tube, while the end destined for the patient’s catheter was kept free. The results were similar to those obtained with specific follicle aspiration equipment’s. The continuous infusion pump can represent a viable alternative for recovery of bovine oocytes in vivo.

Severe phlegmonous cystitis: case report MV&Z
Nakamuta, Bruna Higa; Kolber, Milton; Nagasse, Nathalie.
A case of severe phlegmonous cystitis or purulent cystitis due to bacterial infection is reported in a 9-year-old female dog of the Dachshund breed, presenting dysuria about a week ago. Biochemical examinations were performed, besides calculation analysis and abdominal ultrasound examination. The biochemistry exams did not present alterations. Calculation analysis showed calcium carbonate/urate. The diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasonography in which a heterogeneous, hypoechogenic and hyperechogenic aspect was seen in the caudal region of the bladder. The animal underwent surgery, in which a mass adhered to the bladder was removed and sent for histological examination, resulting in loss of epithelial lining and severe leukocyte infiltration. This report...

Rolling technique for treatment of left displacement of the large colon in horses: 11 cases (2004-2009) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Canola,P.A.; Lacerda Neto,J.C.; Canola,J.C..
The left displacement of the large colon, a condition that commonly occurs in horses, has two clinical manifestations. Different treatments including medical treatment, rolling the horse under general anesthesia or surgical correction have been recommended. The diagnosis can often be made by rectal examination and confirmed by percutaneous ultrasonography. During the period between 2004 and 2009, 11 horses were treated for left displacement of the large colon by rolling the horses under general anesthesia, using a slightly different technique than the ones previously described. The clinical case selection was based on rectal palpation confirmed with ultrasonogram. Nine animals were successfully treated and two had to be submitted to surgery after three...

Pelvic osteosarcoma ressection in a bitch: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rodrigues,B.A.; Faraco,C.; Oliveira,R.; Cheuiche,S.; Teixeira,F.S.; Kirst,C.; Faraon,A.; Sousa,E.M..
An osteosarcoma involving the pelvis was diagnosed in a 9-year-old neutered Labrador bitch. The clinical signs manifested by the patient before surgical removal of the tumor included urinary difficulty, dyschezia, and inconstant non-weight-bearing on the hindlimbs. These signs were linked to the localization of the tumor, which was identified as a firm and painful mass of the size of an orange in the caudal abdomen. The favorable short term clinical results after surgery and carboplatin chemotherapy showed that the association of these approaches can be employed to manage discomfort inflicted by tumor and, therefore improve the quality of life of patient of bone cancer.

Fulgêncio,J.Q.; Miranda,F.G.; Santos,C.J.; Moreira,G.D.; Tôrres,R.C.S.; Nepomuceno,A.C..
ABSTRACT A 3 year old female feline of mixed breed was sent to the diagnostic imaging sector under suspicion of bleeding due to ovariohysterectomy. An abdominal ultrasonography was performed to confirm the initial suspicion. However, no signs of bleeding were found, instead it was observed that the left renal silhouette had two pelvises and was elongated and larger than normal. The right kidney was not found. Excretory urography was requested to evaluate the condition of the ureters. The final diagnosis was crossed renal ectopia with fusion in an asymptomatic cat with no changes in renal function.

Sonographic assessment of vessel invasion by cervical masses in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carvalho,C.F.; Ruivo,C.N.; Simão,C.M.; Viani,F.C..
Tumor invasion of the vessels displays both therapeutic and prognostic implications and represents a challenge for head and neck surgeons. Although previous research has shown that ultrasound can detect such invasions, accurate sonographic parameters to do so have not yet been established. We sought to determine sonographic criteria which are able to characterize these invasions. A high-resolution transducer was used to perform ultrasound examinations of 15 patients selected from a group with inconclusive radiography and computed tomography diagnosis. We found that encasement of the vessel, tumor immobility or fixation in the vessel wall, and narrowing and/or deformity of the lumen were the best criteria. Indeed, when loss of hyperechoic interface of the...
