The main objective of this study was to compare ultrasound assisted extraction with soxhlet extraction method as control in the extraction ascorbic acid of fennel seeds. Treatment conditions were performed using soxhlet method (240 min at 85 °C) and ultrasound treatment (20 kHz, 39, 64 and 96 W/cm2, 40 and 60 °C), for 15, 30 and 45 min. No significant differences were observed for total soluble solids among the samples studied. A similar trend was observed for both the amount of ascorbic acid extract and its ability to DPPH free radical scavenging. The greatest amount of ascorbic acid obtained in 15 minutes sonication (96 W/cm2 at 60 °C), with equivalent of 1.73 mg/ml fennel seeds extraction. There was a significant difference between soxhlet and... |

In this work, multivariate optimization techniques were used to develop a method based on the ultrasound-assisted extraction for copper, manganese, nickel and zinc determination from rations for chicken nutrition using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The proportions of extracting components (2.0 mol.L–1 nitric, hydrochloric and acetic acid solutions) were optimized using centroid-simplex mixture design. The optimum proportions of this mixture taken as percentage of each component were respectively 20%, 37% and 43%. Variables of method (sample mass, sonication time and final acid concentration) were optimized using Doehlert design. The optimum values found for these variables were respectively 0.24 g, 18s and 3.6 mol.L–1. The developed method allows... |

Abstract Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction parameters of perilla protein isolate (PPI), which has functional properties. A central composite experimental design was applied to investigate the effects of three factors (ultrasonic power, extraction time, and liquid-to-solid ratio) on six responses: protein yield, water solubility index (WSI), water absorption capacity (WAC), oil holding capacity (OHC), emulsifying activity (EA), and foaming ability (FA). Based on the RSM results, the optimum conditions were an ultrasonic power of 206 W, and extraction time of 32.4 min, and a liquid-to-solid ratio of 10.34:1. Under these conditions, PPI had high protein yield (26.1%) and functional properties (55.2%... |

Abstract Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was used to extract procyanidins (PC) from the perilla seed hull. Four independent variables, namely, liquid-to-solid ratio, ethanol concentration, UAE time, and UAE temperature were investigated. Response surface methodology was performed on the basis of results of single-factor tests. The optimal conditions for PC extraction were as follows: a liquid-to-solid ratio of 15:1, an ethanol concentration of 62%, a UAE time of 29 min, and a UAE temperature of 53 °C. Under these conditions, the experimental yield of PC was 2.185 mg/g (n = 3), which is correlated with the predicted value of 2.2 mg/g. The extracted and purified PC showed excellent antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl,... |

Abstract Jabuticaba is a very popular fruit in Brazil being a great source of compounds with considerable biological activities. Novel optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) methods have been proposed for anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds from jabuticaba. A Box–Behnken experimental design (BBD) with a response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of six independent variables (solvent composition, solvent-to-sample ratio, ultrasound amplitude and cycle, pH, and temperature) on the UAE. Solvent composition was found to be the most significant variable for the extraction of both anthocyanins (51%) and total phenolic compounds (72%). The other optimum conditions for anthocyanins were as follows: pH 7.00, 39.8 ºC, 20:1.5... |

Abstract Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of functional components from perilla leaves. The factors investigated were ethanol concentration, extraction temperature, and extraction time. The results revealed that ethanol concentration had significant effects on all extraction parameters. Based on the RSM results, the optimal conditions were an ethanol concentration of 56%, a UAE temperature of 54 °C, and a UAE time of 55 min. Under these conditions, the experimental TPC (total phenolic content), RA (rosmarinic acid), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) values were 48.85 mg GAE/g DW (mg gallic acid equivalent /g of dry weight), 31.02 mg/g DW, 85.55 μmol... |

The aim of this study was to compare two processes for the extraction of R-phycoerythrin (R-PE) from the red seaweed Grateloupia turuturu: ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (UAEH). Process efficiencies were both evaluated by the yield of R-PE extraction and by the level of liquefaction. Experiments were conducted at 40 and 22 °C, for 6 h, using an enzymatic cocktail and an original ultrasonic flow-through reactor. R-PE appeared very sensitive to temperature, thus 22 °C is strongly recommended for its extraction by UAEH or UAE. However, the higher processing temperature (40 °C) clearly increased the extraction of water-soluble compounds (up to 91% of liquefaction). These two new processes are thus promising... |
