Immune Cells Depletion During Wound Healing as a Long-Term Effect of Undernutrition International Journal of Morphology

Undernutrition in early life is associated with a number of acute and chronic sequelae, and recovering is a controversial issue. Even if undernutrition in Brazil is declining, studies have shown that about 31% of brazilian children still present severe or moderate malnutrition. The present study goal was to induce early malnutrition in rats and observe short- (undernourished) and long-term (after recovered) effects on defense cells involved in wound healing. Undernutrition was produced by separating the pups from the mother for 10 hours/day during the suckling period (21 days after birth). As controls were used rats at same age not submitted to suckling restriction. Undernutrition and recovering states were assessed by body weight. Skin wounds were made on...

Reconsiderando la metodología FAO sobre el cálculo del número de personas que pasan hambre en el mundo AgEcon
Morales-Opazo, Cristian; Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús.
FAO measure of undernourishment is calculated based on three main parameters: dietary energy supply (DES), minimum dietary energy requirement (MDER), and the coefficient of variation of dietary energy consumption (CV). In the current implementation of this methodology, the DES and the MDER change over time, as would be expected. The CV, however, remains constant. However, we expect the CV to change over time and be a function of income and prices. This paper discusses why the CV should change in response to changes in these variables, and suggests a practical way to estimate changes in the CV over time in the absence of survey data.

Influence of the test situation on pup retrieval behavior of normal and undernourished lactating rats BJMBR
Rocha,J.B.T.; Soares,F.A.A.; de Mello,C.F..
Undernutrition of dams and pups disrupts the retrieval efficiency of mothers. However, if the mothers are assessed in their home cages, they spend more time with their litters. In the present study the effect of test conditions on pup retrieval behavior of mothers receiving a 25% (well-nourished group) and 8% casein diet (undernourished group) was examined. In agreement with previous studies, undernourished mothers spent more time with their litters than well-nourished dams as lactation proceeded. Pup retrieval behavior varied with test conditions. In the first experiment, the maternal behavior of dams was assessed by the standard procedure (pups were separated from their mother and scattered over the floor of the home cage). The mother was then returned...
