Mechanical properties of composites based on low styrene emission polyester resins for marine applications ArchiMer
Baley, Christophe; Perrot, Yves; Davies, Peter; Bourmaud, Alain; Grohens, Yves.
Glass fibre reinforced polyester composites are used extensively for hulls and decks of pleasure boats. Boat-builders must optimise manufacturing technology, not only with respect to mechanical properties but also limiting volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions. One way to achieve this is through modified polyester resin formulations such as low styrene content, low styrene emission or combinations of these. The resin matrix selection procedure is based on design specification (mechanical behaviour) but also manufacturing requirements and cost considerations. For this application post-cure is rarely used so it is important to optimise curing conditions. In this study the influence of the curing cycle on mechanical properties was examined first for two...

Evaluation of Basalt Fibre Composites for Marine Applications ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Verbouwe, W..
Basalt fibres offer potential for use in marine structures, but few data exist to evaluate the influence of seawater immersion on their mechanical behaviour. This paper provides the results from a study in which basalt fibre reinforced epoxy composites were aged in natural seawater at different temperatures. Tests were performed under quasi-static and cyclic loading, first in the as-received state then after saturation in natural seawater. Results are compared to those for an E-glass reinforced composite with the same epoxy matrix. They indicate similar mechanical performance for both materials after seawater saturation.

Transverse tensile behaviour of unidirectional plies reinforced with flax fibres ArchiMer
Baley, C; Perrot, Yves; Busnel, F; Guezenoc, H; Davies, Peter.
Flax provides a renewable source of fibres with good mechanical properties, which justifies its use as a reinforcement for polymers. Composite materials made with flax which has only undergone mechanical treatments (stripping followed by combing) results in the presence of bundles of fibres. When a unidirectional flax/polyester ply is loaded in transverse tension the damage mechanisms are complex; cracks develop in the matrix, and at the fibre/matrix interface, but they also appear within the fibres themselves and in the lamellae within the fibre bundles. This emphasises the highly anisotropic nature of these flax fibres, whose average longitudinal Young's modulus is 59 GPa and whose transverse modulus is estimated here to be 8 GPa.
