Salinity changes along the upper limb of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation - art. no. L06609 ArchiMer
Blanke, Bruno; Arhan, Michel; Speich, Sabrina.
Lagrangian analyses of a global ocean circulation model quantify the salinity changes experienced by the warm limb of the thermohaline circulation during the northward flow to the Atlantic deep convection regions. 6 Sv out of the estimated 10-Sv transfer from 45 degrees S to 47 degrees N flow through regions of prevailing surface evaporation: the southern and northern formation regions of Salinity Maximum Water and the Gulf of Cadiz/Mediterranean Sea domain. The remaining transport gains salinity through mixing with adjacent waters. As much as 6 Sv flow through the low-salinity surface mixed layer at the latitudes of the ITCZ whose effect annihilates that of the southern region of Salinity Maximum Water. Most of the salinity increase corresponds to the...

Infraclavicular Topography of the Brachial Plexus Fascicles in Different Upper Limb Positions International Journal of Morphology
Alves dos Santos,Daniel; Iatecola,Amilton; Dias Vecina,Cesar Adriano; Caldeira,Eduardo Jose; Noboro Isayama,Ricardo; Chacon,Erivelto Luis; Alves,Marianna Carla; Palomari,Evanisi Teresa; Salete Viotto,Maria Jose; Rodrigues da Cunha,Marcelo.
Brachial plexus neuropathies are common complaints among patients seen at orthopedic clinics. The causes range from traumatic to occupational factors and symptoms include paresthesia, paresis, and functional disability of the upper limb. Treatment can be surgical or conservative, but detailed knowledge of the brachial plexus is required in both cases to avoid iatrogenic injuries and to facilitate anesthetic block, preventing possible vascular punctures. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the topography of the infraclavicular brachial plexus fascicles in different upper limb positions adopted during some clinical procedures. A formalin-preserved, adult, male cadaver was used. The infraclavicular and axillary regions were dissected and...

Anomalous Branching Patterns of the Axillary Artery International Journal of Morphology
Kim,Jong-Wan; Park,Hyo Seok; Park,Jin Seo; Jung,Yong-Wook.
Arterial variations in the upper limbs can cause iatrogenic injury during invasive procedures. During educational dissection of countered uncommon branching patterns of the axillary artery which have not yet been reported yet, to our knowledge. First, the second part of the axillary artery was divided into three trunks. The lateral trunk ran downward as a superficial brachioradial artery. The medial trunk raised the lateral thoracic artery, and was divided into the subscapular artery and the posterior circumflex humeral artery. The intermediate trunk branched off the anterior circumflex humeral artery as expected for an axillary artery. Second, in the other cadaver, we found a common trunk containing the thoracoacromial artery and a bulk artery dividing...

Morphology and Morphometry of the Tendons of the Palmaris Longus and Radial Carpal Extensor Muscles in Humans International Journal of Morphology
Cerda,Aladino; del Sol,Mariano.
The tendons of the palmaris longus (PL) and radial carpal extensor (RCE) muscles have extensive applications in surgery, yet despite their constant use, information about their morphological and morphometric characteristics remains limited. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological and morphometric characteristics of the PL and RCE muscle tendons and compare them to each other in 30 upper limbs of adult individuals with no apparent deformations from anatomy units at four universities in Chile. The anterior side and lateral margin of the forearm and the back of the hand as far as the tendon plane were dissected. The average length, width at origin level and at the level of the radiocarpal joint line of the PL muscle tendon were 125.48 mm ±...

Translation into Brazilian Portuguese, cultural adaptation and evaluation of the reliability of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire BJMBR
Orfale,A.G.; Araújo,P.M.P.; Ferraz,M.B.; Natour,J..
The objective of the present study was to translate, adapt and validate a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) Questionnaire. The study was carried out in two steps. The first was to translate the DASH into Portuguese and to perform cultural adaptation and the second involved the determination of the reliability and validity of the DASH for the Brazilian population. For this purpose, 65 rheumatoid arthritis patients of either sex (according to the classification criteria of the American College of Rheumatology), ranging in age from 18 to 60 years and presenting no other diseases involving the upper limbs, were interviewed. The patients were selected consecutively at the rheumatology outpatient clinic of...
