Variation in the ureide content of Jack Bean during the reproductive stages in response to nitrate BABT
Camargos,Liliane Santos; Aguiar,Leandro Ferreira; Carmezini,José Antônio; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes.
Nitrogen is frequently the limiting mineral nutrient for plant productivity and it is essential to obtain an understanding of how this element is assimilated and its metabolism regulated, in crop plants. The objective of this work was to study nitrogen metabolism in the tropical legume Canavalia ensiformis, a plant species used as a green manure. The nitrate dose provided changed the concentrations of ureides exported via the xylem, whilst the developmental stage alterations demonstrated to influence the form of ureide exported via the xylem. Considering the content of ureides as an indicator of N-fixation status, it could be concluded that N-fixation was affected in the presence of nitrate in C. ensiformis.

Physiological and N2-fixation-related traits for tolerance to drought in soybean progenies PAB
Cerezini,Paula; Kuwano,Biana Harumi; Neiverth,Walkyria; Grunvald,Anna Karolina; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate six soybean (Glycine max) genotypes for physiological traits and biological nitrogen fixation in drought conditions, and their capacity for recovery after rewetting, based on yield components. The genotypes evaluated in a greenhouse were the following: 'BRS 317', susceptible to drought; R01-581F and R02-1325, which show biological nitrogen fixation tolerant to drought; and the BRB14-207525, BRB14-207526, BRB14-207527 breed lines resulting from crossings between commercial genotypes and PI 471938, which shows a slow-wilting phenotype under drought. Drought conditions were applied to the genotypes at the full-flowering stage (R2) for ten days, whereas control plants were kept well-watered. Photosynthetic...

Influence of photoperiod on the accumulation of allantoin in comfrey plants Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
CASTRO,ANA HORTÊNCIA FONSÊCA; YOUNG,MARIA CLÁUDIA MARX; ALVARENGA,AMAURI ALVES DE; ALVES,JOSÉ DONIZETI.
In order to evaluate the influence of photoperiod on the accumulation of allantoin in comfrey (Symphytum officinale L.), a well known medicinal plant, an experiment was conducted during July and August, 1998. Cuttings obtained from 90 day old plants were submitted to four photoperiods (8, 12, 16 and 20 hours). After 60 days, allantoin content in roots and rhizomes was evaluated. The results showed that increases in photoperiod promoted an increment in the average content of allantoin in roots (0.06%, 0.303%, 1.213% and 4.78%). On the other hand, in rhizomes, allantoin accumulation decreased (9.65%, 7.14%, 0.55%) when the photoperiod was increased from 8 to 12 and 16 hours, respectively, stabilizing on a 20-hour photoperiod (0.53%). Plants cultivated under...

Water restriction and physiological traits in soybean genotypes contrasting for nitrogen fixation drought tolerance Scientia Agricola
Cerezini,Paula; Fagotti,Dáfila dos Santos Lima; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is essential to the economic viability of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop in Brazil, but drought may impair the BNF processes. We evaluated physiological traits of nitrogen fixation drought-tolerant (NFDT) (R01-581F, R01-416F and R02-1325) and drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317) genotypes of soybean subjected to drought or regular water supply between 45 and 55 days after emergence, in an experiment under greenhouse conditions in pots containing non-sterile soil. R01-581F had more stable photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and higher intercellular CO2 levels under drought. Drought reduced the chlorophyll concentration in all genotypes, but with less intensity in R01-581F and R02-1325. The...
