Canine hypospadias is a rare condition that can occur in male and female dogs. Affected animals may present signs of urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, periurethral dermatitis or can remain asymptomatic. A male Brazilian Fila dog was referred because of a perineal orifice with urine stream during micturition. To determine the extent of the accessory channel, a contrasted retrograde urethrocystography was performed. A surgical correction was undertaken. Histological study showed the presence of the urethral channel lined by multilayer transitional epithelium. The use of bovine pericardium as a urethral patch to substitute a ventral segment of canine urethras was studied. Healing, epithelial growth, urethral permeability, fistulas, and calcification were analyzed. Thirty male mongrel dogs of medium and large size underwent resection of a ventral segment of the medial urethra measuring 2.0 x 0.5 cm, which was replaced with a bovine pericardium graft, treated with buffered glutaraldehyde and preserved in formaldehyde. Two running sutures of polygalactin 5-0 were applied, one on each side of the patch. The corpus spongiosum was closed with uninterrupted suture and the skin with interrupted suture of polygalactin 5-0. Six months later, the animals were examined and sacrificed under anesthesia. A dog with abdominal trauma had an urethrorectal fistula and secundary bilateral hidronephrosis and hydroureter, identified by urethrocistography and excretory urography. According to our researches, only two cases of traumatic urethrorectal fistula had been reported until now in veterinary medicine.
