The genera of Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) from South America Darwiniana
Ulibarri,Emilio A.
The South American flora includes 65 genera of Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) with wide morphological variation. The four tribes of that subafmily are represented: 31 genera belong to the Caesalpinieae (3 of them introduced); 9 to the Cassieae; 2 to Cercideae (1 introduced), and 23 to Detarieae (2 introduced). Among the South American Caesalpinoideae, 30 genera are endemic (mainly to Brazil), the remaining ones inhabit in tropical and subtropical areas from both hemispheres. All of them grow in diverse habitats: from rainforests, evergreen or deciduous forests, to savannas, semideserts and high mountains. Tribes and genera are arranged according to Polhill & Raven (1981), only Poepiggia has been transferred from Caesalpinieae to Cassieae, and...

Utilization and biodegradation of starch stillage (distillery wastewater) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Krzywonos,Malgorzata; Cibis,Edmund; Miskiewicz,Tadeusz; Ryznar-Luty,Agnieszka.
Stillage (distillery wastewater) is the main by-product originating in distilleries, and its volume is approximately 10 times that of ethanol produced. It is not surprising that the utilization of the stillage raises serious problems, and that many attempts have been made all over the world to solve them. In Poland most of the ethanol (about 90%) is produced from starch-based feedstocks, i.e. grains and potatoes. Starch feedstocks are widely used for spirit production also in other European countries, as well as outside Europe. The manuscript provides an overview of global fuel ethanol production and information on methods used for starch-based stillage biodegradation and utilization. The methods presented in this paper have been classified into two major...

Determinação da utilização do capim bufel (Cenchrus ciliaris L) pelo método de guias fotográficas. Infoteca-e

Awareness of e-learning resources in contrast to actual usage at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine OAK
Campbell, David; KUBOTA, Miyuki; キャンベル, ディビッド; 久保田, 美由紀.
In 2001, e-learning, as a part of the government’s e-Japan initiative, began to be introduced in universities throughout Japan. Now almost ten years later it is necessary to evaluate how successful this strategy has been by looking at the awareness and usage of e-learning at one small agriculture university. This was done by conducting a survey to gauge student, faculty, and staff awareness of e-learning resources and talking to people in different departments responsible for e-learning on campus. From this research it was discovered that individuals are familiar with the term"elearning", but not sure what it entails. Also it was found that even though there have been a variety of e-learning resources available for 4 years (2006-2010) very few people have...

Degradation of the riparian wetlands in the Lake Victoria basin - Yala swamp case study OceanDocs
Thenya, Thuita; Wassmann, Reiner; Verchot, Louis; Mungai, David.
Land degradation is as a result of broad range of scales and factors, which include biophysical, climatic, demographic and socio-economic. The aim of this paper was to provide an analysis of wetland utilisation, ecosystem degradation and their effect on the Lake Victoria (Kenya) ecosystem. This involved analysis of socioeconomic and remote sensed data. The main sources of wetland degradation in the Lake Victoria basin were identified as (1) farming activities, (2) grazing and macrophyte harvesting and (3) coupled with catchment degradation-deforestation. These factors were closely related to the demographic dynamics and unsustainable land utilisation practices. Socio-economic data provided valuable insight on the pattern of wetland utilisation and possible...

Utilization-focused evaluation for agricultural innovation AgEcon
Patton, Michael Quinn; Horton, Douglas.
Utilization-focused evaluation (UFE) is based on the principle that an evaluation should be judged by its utility. So no matter how technically sound and methodologically elegant, an evaluation is not truly a good evaluation unless the findings are used. UFE is a framework for enhancing the likelihood that evaluation findings will be used and lessons will be learnt from the evaluation process. This Brief, based on the book Utilization-focused evaluation, introduces this approach to evaluation, outlines key steps in the evaluation process, identifies some of the main benefits of UFE, and provides two examples of UFE in the context of programmes aimed at promoting agricultural innovation.

Sustaining Small and Medium Enterprises through Financial Service Utilization: Does Financial Literacy Matter? AgEcon
Nunoo, Jacob; Andoh, Francis K..
Promoting a dynamic operating environment for Small Medium scale enterprises (SMEs) is seen as a priority amongst economic development goals, in both developed and emerging economies. SMEs are a primary driver for job creation and GDP growth. They greatly contribute to economic diversification and social stability and they play an important role for private sector development. It must be emphasized, that the utilization of these financial products does not only promote the growth of the SMEs themselves but also their active participation in the financial services market leads to financial development which is widely recognized as an important determinant of economic growth and also recognized as important for enhancing the social and economic impact of...

Influence of firm related factors and industrial policy regime on technology based capacity utilization in sugar industry in Nigeria AgEcon
Akpan, Sunday Brownson; Udo, U.J.; Essien, Ubon A..
The study analyzed the technology based capacity utilization rate in sugar industry in Nigeria in the period 1970 to 2010. Data used in the study were obtained from the sugar firms, publications of the Central Bank of Nigeria and National Bureau of Statistics. Augmented Dicker Fuller unit root test was conducted on the specified data to ascertain their stationarity and order of integration. The result reveals that some variables were stationary at level while some were stationary at first difference. The diagnostic statistics from the multiple log linear regression on the specified variables confirmed the reliability of the model. The empirical result reveals that sugar cane price and sugar industry’s real energy consumption have significant negative...

Impact of Biofuel Industry Expansion on Grain Utilization and Distribution: Preliminary Results of Iowa Grain and Biofuel Survey AgEcon
Yu, Tun-Hsiang (Edward); Hart, Chad E..
This paper examines the impact of biofuel expansion on grain utilization and distribution at the state and cropping district level as most of grain producers and handlers are directly influenced by the local changes. We conducted a survey to understand the utilization and flows of corn, ethanol and its co-products, such as dried distillers grains (DDG) in Iowa. Results suggest that the rapidly expanding ethanol industry has a significant impact on corn utilization in Iowa. Comparing to the earlier survey results, ethanol plants drew a considerable amount of corn away from traditional destination markets, such as feeders or export markets. A major portion of corn supplies came from in-state sources, while the sales of Iowa ethanol and DDG were dominated by...

Institution of Ground Water Market for Management of Ground Water Resource: A Study from Assam in Northeast India AgEcon
Dutta, Mrinal Kanti.
Assam in the north eastern region of India has the endowments to ensure agricultural growth in the sense that the state has huge reserves of ground water in addition to the enormous surface water availability. Returns to both labor and capital in the state are considered high as potentials for exploiting the existing technology are yet largely untapped. As insufficient irrigation infrastructure is identified as a major constraint on exploiting such potentials, investment for expanding irrigation capacity is needed. At the same time, putting necessary institutions in place to ensure that the installed capacity is effectively utilized is also equally important. Compared to relatively larger government irrigation schemes, the privately owned and operated tube...
