Revenue volatility faced by Australian wheat farmers AgEcon
Kingwell, Ross S..
This paper uses variance decomposition modelling to explore how wheat revenue volatility in Australia has changed spatially and temporally. The components of revenue variance are the variances and covariances of wheat prices, the area of wheat harvested and the yield of wheat. The key finding is that the volatility of wheat revenue (detrended) has more than doubled in every main wheat-growing State in Australia over the last 15 years or so Changes in wheat areas are mostly a minor source of revenue variance. The principal cause of volatility is yield changes with price changes increasing slightly in absolute importance when compared to their adjacent previous period. Greater downside yield risk is often the principal cause of the increased yield variance....

IS INCREASED INSTABILITY IN CEREAL PRODUCTION IN ETHIOPIA CAUSED BY POLICY CHANGES? AgEcon
Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; Oosthuizen, Klopper; van Schalkwyk, Herman D..
In Ethiopia, growth in cereal production is accompanied by a more than proportionate increase in the standard deviation of production. This study applies descriptive and variance decomposition procedures to determine the sources of increased instability in cereal production in order to show whether they are caused by policy changes. It was found that production instability was caused more by increased yield instability. Considering the fact that use of high-powered inputs is limited to a small number of farmers, production is at subsistence level and that farmers' responsiveness to policy changes is constrained by infrastructural and institutional constraints and by the existing land policy, instability in yield is predominantly attributed to weather...

Analysis of the Dynamic Relationship among Financial Fund for Agriculture, Agricultural Output Value and Farmers' income AgEcon
Tian, Cui-jie.
By using the methods of co-integration, impulse response function and variance decomposition, I conduct the empirical research on the dynamic relationship among China's financial fund for agriculture, agricultural output value, and farmers' income from the year 1978 to the year 2009. The results indicate that me government’s financial fund for agriculture plays the significant role in promoting agricultural output Value and farmers' income in the long run, but this role of promoting is not prominent in the short run; in the mean time, agricultural output value plays insignificant role in promoting farmers' income and the governments financial fund for agriculture; farmers' income plays the significant role in promoting agricultural output value and the...

Econometric Study of Relationship between Change of Farmland Quantity and Policy of Farmland Protection in China AgEcon
Peng, Ling; Liao, Tie-jun.
According to the data from Investigation Report of Land Use Change in China, The Land Resources Communique of China and Chronicle of Statistical Data for Five Decades of New China issued from Ministry of Land Resources, we select two indices: change of farmland quantity and policy of farmland protection. According to econometric theory, by using Eviewes 5.1 software, co-integration analysis, Granger causality test, impulse response and other analysis methods, we analyze the relationship between change of farmland quantity and policy of farmland protection in China since the reform and opening-up. The results show that there is long-term balanced relationship between change of farmland quantity and policy of farmland protection, and there is a certain...

MEASURING THE RISKS OF NEW YORK DAIRY FARMERS AgEcon
Schmit, Todd M.; Boisvert, Richard N.; Tauer, Loren W..
Decomposition methods suggest major contributors to variability in returns to New York dairy farms are purchased feed quantities and milk production; milk price variability contributes substantially less. Decomposing the Gini measure of income inequality indicates that milk revenues and purchased feed expenditures contribute most to farm return inequality over time.

Decomposition of Variability in Farm Household Assets and Debt AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; El-Osta, Hisham S..
Farm families often hold large quantities of wealth and, like any other family, assess their financial progress by reviewing their net worth (or wealth) position periodically. Wealth has an impact on many decisions such as production, retirement, and succession of the farm. Households, in general, seek stability growth in wealth and, ideally, income as well. In the case of wealth, farm households will be better equipped to handle variability once the contributing sources are identified. This study measures how much of the variability in farm household assets and debt is attributed to the variability in farm and nonfarm sources of assets and farm and nonfarm sources of debt. Using a normalized variance decomposition approach and data from the Agricultural...

Dynamic Relation between Rural Human Capital and Farmers' Income in Henan Province AgEcon
Li, Ting-ting; Zhang, An-liang.
We use relevant economic and labor force data from 1990 to 2009 of Henan Province to analyze the dynamic relation between stock of rural human capital and farmers' income. Results indicate that a certain causal relationship and long-run equilibrium relation exist between rural human capital and farmers' income, but their interaction shows some lagging characteristic. Increase of farmers' income in Henan Province increases the stock of rural human capital in this Province for a short term. However, in the long run, this accumulation effect will decline along with renewal and aging of knowledge. The positive promotion action of rural human capital on farmers' income will appear after a long lag time. therefore, the policy of strengthening rural human capital...
