Wendling, Ivar; Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária; Brondani, Gilvano Ebling; Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso; Biassio, Adriana de; Universidade Federal do Paraná; Dutra, Leonardo Ferreira; Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária.
The difficulty and length of time required for seed germination of mate (Ilex paraguariensis), as well as the pressing need for clonal multiplication of improved genetic material, has resulted in several studies related to vegetative propagation in an effort to obtain rooted cuttings more quickly and with better genetic quality. Currently, the biggest challenge is propagating and rooting adult plants selected in the field without requiring clear cutting to generate conditions for the basal induction of juvenile sprouts. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a method to rescue adult mate plants through the generation of epicormic sprouts. To accomplish this, tree branches of mate that were at least 19 years of age were collected and packed...

Rooting of stem segments from fig tree cultivars Agronomy
Bisi, Rayane Barcelos; Locatelli, Guilherme; Barbosa, Caio Morais de Alcântara; Pio, Rafael; Balbi, Rodrigo Vieira.
Although Brazil is the largest fig (Ficus carica L.) producer in the Southern Hemisphere, it mainly uses only one cultivar, ‘Roxo de Valinhos’. In addition, propagation is almost entirely through hardwood cuttings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish a propagation method that provides more successful rooting of stem segments of fig cultivars for the purpose of expanding the genetic base of the fig tree. The cultivars used were ‘Brunswick’, ‘Calabacita’, ‘Negro de Bursa’, ‘Mini Figo’, ‘Lampa Preta’, ‘Lemon’, ‘Troiano’,’ Nazaré’, ‘Três num Prato’, ‘Princesa’, ‘Colo de Dama’, ‘Montes’, ‘Bêbera Branca’, ‘Pingo de Mel’, and ‘Roxo de Valinhos’. The propagation methods used were layering, hardwood cuttings, nodal segments, herbaceous cuttings...

Dieback of mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota) grafts is the most important disease during vegetative propagation in commercial nurseries. In 2008, Lasiodiplodia theobromae identified by cultural, morphological and molecular characterization was associated with this disease in 97 % of necrotic rootstocks and scions samples from a nursery in Guerrero, México. The fungus was inoculated onto the binding site of El Mexicano grafted plants. Dieback symptoms and gradual drying with cracking of the bark from the apex to the base of the scion were observed 30 d after inoculation. Abundant mycelia and pycnidia were found on inoculated scions and graft union areas, in the periderm, and on leaf scars. Transverse sections of inoculated scions tissues showed pycnidia....

Tree species sprouting from root buds in a semideciduous forest affected by fires BABT
Rodrigues,Ricardo R.; Torres,Roseli B.; Matthes,Luis A. F.; Penha,Alessandra S..
Tree species which sprouted from root buds were identified in a 3.6ha area of a Semideciduous Seasonal Forest fragment in Campinas, São Paulo State (22° 55' S and 47° 05' W), affected by several fires. Connection between sprouts and main trunk root system was confirmed by digging and root exposure. Twenty seven tree species with root buds were identified, with a high proportion of Leguminosae species. The majority of identified species (45%) were characteristic of initial secondary succession stages. Distances between sprouts and main trunks varied from 0.6m (Guettarda viburnioides Cham. and Schltdl- Rubiaceae.) to 14.0m (Colubrina glandulosa Perkins- Rhamnaceae). These results lead discussions about natural and/or human-made disturbances influence on the...

Morphological aspects of the propagation in Heliconia velloziana L. Emygd. (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) BABT
Simão,Daniela G.; Scatena,Vera L..
Morphology of seed and vegetative propagation was studied toHeliconia velloziana L. Emygd. (Heliconiaceae), a rhizomatous herb with a large aerial part. Seeds took about four months to germinate, probably due to the undifferentiated embryo and hard endocarp. Seedlings had two first foliar structures as scale leaves and the primary root developed, but the adventitious roots were more conspicuous. Vegetative propagation by rhizomes was faster than the sexual one. The roots developed after one month, while young shoots started developing after four to six weeks; young aerial shoots presented a variable number of cataphylls and two protophylls.

Asexual propagation of peach palm by division of the clump and extraction of the off-shoots Horticultura Brasileira
Flores,Wanders BC; Yuyama,Kaoru; Silva,Raimundo G da.
The peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) is a native Amazonian palm tree that produces fruits and palm hearts, and is now attracting the interest of the farmers in other parts of Brazil given the economical potential of palm heart production. Traditionally the peach palm is propagated by seeds, which yield segregating progenies due to cross-pollination. To guarantee the uniformity and quality of elite selections, the alternative is the propagation of superior genotypes from off-shoots (tillers), because an efficient in vitro cultivation protocol does not exist. The objective of the present study was the development of a more appropriate technique of vegetative propagation by division of the clump, in order to multiply plants selected in the improvement program. A...
