| Farmers in America's Heartland are paying increasing attention to emerging trends of consolidation of farm firms, contractual and ownership linkages across input suppliers/processor and farm firms, and strategic partnering across the stages of food production, processing, and the firms that do business with farmers. The papers contained in this conference proceedings provide an overview of industrialization, and addresses its causes and consequences for producers, rural communities, food firms, and their customers. Industrialization holds different meaning, implications, and opportunities for different people. |

| Recent changes in structure of the U.S. pork industry reflect, in many ways, past changes in the broiler industry. Production contracts and vertical integration in the broiler industry facilitated rapid adoption of new technology, improved quality control, assured market outlets for broilers, and provided a steady flow of broilers for processing. Affordable, high-quality chicken products have contributed to continual increases in U.S. chicken consumption, which has surpassed pork and beef on a per capita basis. Incentives for contracting and vertical integration in the pork industry may yield comparable results. If so, these arrangements might be expected to result in larger supplies of higher quality pork products at economical prices. |

| Supply chains for fresh fruit and vegetables, are going through considerable re-shaping phase worldwide. | This contribution aims to analyze the main factors determining the initiation of vertical coordination between processing enterprises and milk producers in Ukraine. In this regard special attention is paid to the role of uncertainty, asset specificity and resource availability. Furthermore, the impact of vertical coordination on quality improvement, trust development and strategic advantages achieved is analyzed. The survey results indicate that uncertainty is a major driver for the processing level to initiate vertical coordination schemes. Although vertical coordination appears to have positive impacts on both supplier groups, corporate farms tend to benefit more from vertical coordination schemes than semi-subsistence farms. |

| This paper addresses the various modes of access to production factors, such as capital, specific inputs and know-how, as reasons for the varied development of Romanian dairy supply chains and their respective actors (farmers, processors). The paper draws on results from an ongoing World Bank study. The findings are based on semi-structured telephone and face-to-face interviews conducted in January-February 2009. | A survey among cow-calf producers was conducted during 2006 in Western Canada, to assess producers’ preferences towards participation in beef alliances. Producers’ choices were analyzed by varying the degree of vertical coordination in hypothetical lliance participation, while controlling for producer and farm-specific characteristics to explore risk, transaction cost and incentive considerations in participation decisions.
