Chlorophyll profiles and the water column structure in the Gulf of California ArchiMer
Hidalgo-gonzalez, Raquel M; Alvarez-borrego, Saul.
Remote sensors provide information on the photosynthetic pigment concentration for the upper 22% of the euphotic zone. To model primary production in the water column from satellite-derived photosynthetic pigments, estimates of the vertical distribution of pigment concentration are required. A Gaussian distribution function is used to represent the pigment vertical profile with four parameters. We used 268 chlorophyll concentration profiles from 1973 through 1993, to estimate these parameters. Cluster analysis of surface temperature was used to define the cool season as the period end of November-end of June, and the rest of the year is considered the warm season. Cluster analysis of surface temperature acid chlorophyll data grouped the stations into four...

Towards an optimal sampling strategy for Alexandrium catenella (Dinophyceae) benthic resting cysts ArchiMer
Genovesi, B; Mouillot, D; Vaquer, A; Laabir, M; Pastoureaud, Annie.
The study proposes methodological developments to optimize sampling strategy of resting cysts of Alexandrium catenella to estimate their abundance with a predefined error. This work also aims to provide information on spatial distribution of resting cysts in sediments. The distribution mode of A. catenella resting cysts related to the abundance variability was studied through sediment cores sampling on four different spatial scales and using Ludox CLX gradient density method. The quantification method underestimates by a factor of 2 the resting cysts abundance in one gram of sediment. Application of Taylor's power law allowed us to define a compromise between sampling effort and abundance estimation error. In the case of A. catenella resting cysts from...

Modelling sand resuspension by waves over a rippled bed OMA
Trouw, K.; Williams, J.J.; Rose, C.P..
With a two-dimensional <i>Kappa-Epsilon</i>-model and equations to describe sediment entrainment, diffusion, convection and settling, wave-induced flow velocities and sediment concentration fields over rippled beds have been calculated. Results from the simulations are compared with time-averaged vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, measured in a large wave flume using the autonomous multi-sensor instrument STABLE. The simulations make it possible to examine in detail the mechanisms of sediment entrainment, vortex formation and advection. The resulting animations of model output allow a quasi-3-D visualization of sediment resuspension processes and aid quantification of the resulting vertical suspended sediment...

On the vertical distribution of metazoan meiofauna in shelf break and upper slope habitats of the NE Atlantic OMA
Vanreusel, A.; Vincx, M.; Schram, D.; Van Gansbeke, D..
The metazoan meiofauna of nine stations in shelf break and upper slope areas (70 to 1500 m water depth) of the N.E. Atlantic were investigated in order to assess which environmental factors are important in the control of densities and sediment profiles. Total meiofaunal densities (ranging between 368 and 1523 ind/10 cm2 were correlated with bacterial densities, an important food source for meiofauna. However, considering sediment vertical distribution profiles, the relative importance of both food and oxygen on the meiofauna became obvious. A combination of both bacterial densities and oxygen supply could explain about 95% of the variability in the vertical profiles of the meiofauna densities. Meiofauna numbers increase in...

Observed and predicted vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles and bedforms in oscillatory-only flow OMA
Williams, J.J.; Bell, P.S.; Thorne, P.D.; Trouw, K.; Hardcastle, P.J.; Humphrey, J.D..
Measurements of hydrodynamic conditions and vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, have been obtained above rippled sandy beds in a large wave flume. Measured values of wave height and period, water depth and sediment properties are used in well-known formulae to predict sediment dynamics and bed shear stresses due to waves. These data are then used in an existing convective model and a new model to predict C-profiles. Measured C-profiles and C-profiles predicted by the new model are shown to agree well for a range of grain sizes and wave conditions. Grain-scale bed roughness, defined using data from the model, is found to vary with the wave mobility number. Values for the wave mixing coefficient derived using the new model are...
