Fitness components of a recently-established population of Zaprionus indianus (Diptera, Drosophilidae) in Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Setta,Nathalia de; Carareto,Cláudia M. A..
This study aimed to evaluate fitness components of Zaprionus indianus Gupta, 1970, a species recently introduced in Brazil and currently in process of colonization. Longevity, productivity, developmental speed and viability of flies sampled from a population from Mirassol (state of São Paulo, Brazil) were evaluated. Longevity was higher than that of some Indian populations and productivity was similar or higher than in other Drosophilidae. Time of development, one of the main fitness components for competition, was very similar to the values scored in Drosophila sturtevanti Duda, 1927, a species that occurs in high frequencies in the same area as Z. indianus. These data might contribute further for understanding the colonization success of this newcomer...

Assessment of viability in the bacterial standing stock of the Antarctic sea from the Indian side ArchiMer
Loka Bharathi, Pa; Nair, S; Bd De Souza, Mj; Chandramohan, D.
During the austral summer, we examined the bacterial population along the cruise track extending from 70degrees S and 18degrees E to 30degrees S and 35degrees E. During the cruise, three distinct fractions of the bacterioplankton viz. total count, total direct viable and retrievable counts were simultaneously enumerated in these waters. In the stations south of the convergent region designated as section I the population ranged within 10(8-9) L-1 whereas in the north of the region designated as section 11 they were one order higher and ranged from 10(9-10) L-1. The percentage of viability in the region was high corresponding to the generally high chlorophyll and primary productivity encountered in the eastern Aghulas bank. The study substantiates the...

Ecological-economic modelling for the sustainable management of biodiversity ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Cisse, Abdoul; Gourguet, Sophie; Mouysset, L.; Hardy, Pierre-yves; Bene, Christophe; Blanchard, Fabian; Jiguet, Frederic; Pereau, J.-c.; Thebaud, Olivier.
Terrestrial and marine biodiversity provides the basis for both ecosystems functioning and numerous commodities or services that underpin human well-being. From several decades, alarming trends have been reported worldwide for both biodiversity and ecosystem services. Therefore the sustainable management of biodiversity requires a double viewpoint balancing ecological conservation with the welfare of human societies. Understanding the underlying trade-offs, synergies and interactions imposes the development of interdisciplinary researches and methods. In that respect, bio-economic or ecological economic modeling is likely to play a major role. The present paper intends to elicit the key features, strengths and challenges of bio-economic approaches...

Reconciling food security, economic development and biodiversity conservation is a key challenge, especially in the face of the demographic transition characterizing many countries in the world. Fisheries and marine ecosystems constitute a difficult application of this bio-economic challenge. Many experts and scientists advocate an ecosystem approach to manage marine socio-ecosystems for their sustainability and resilience. However, the ways by which to operationalize ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) remain poorly specified. We propose a specific methodological framework-viability modelling-to do so. We show how viability modelling can be applied using four contrasted case-studies: two small-scale fisheries in South America and Pacific and two...

A stochastic viability approach to ecosystem-based fisheries management ArchiMer
Doyen, Luc; Thebaud, Olivier; Bene, Christopher; Martinet, V.; Gourguet, S.; Bertignac, Michel; Fifas, Spyros; Blanchard, Fabian.
Academia and management agencies show a growing interest for ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM). However, the way to operationalize this approach remains challenging. The present paper illustrates how the concepts of stochastic co-viability, which accounts for dynamic complexities, uncertainties, risk and sustainability constraints, can be useful for the implementation of EBFM. In the present case, this concept is used to identify fishing strategies that satisfy both ecological conservation and economic sustainability in a multi-species, multi-fleet context. Economic Viability Analysis (EVA) and the broader Co-Viability Analysis (CVA), are proposed to expand the usual Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and precautionary approach. An illustration is...

Fishery externalities and biodiversity: Trade-offs between the viability of shrimp trawling and the conservation of Frigatebirds in French Guiana ArchiMer
Martinet, Vincent; Blanchard, Fabian.
Sustainable management of natural resources, and in particular fisheries, must take into account several conflicting objectives. This is the case in the French Guiana shrimp fishery for which profitability objectives imply a reduction in the fishing activity. On the one hand, this fishery has negative externalities on marine biodiversity due to discards. On the other hand, this fishery has positive externalities on the economy of the local community and interestingly enough on a protected seabird species in the area (the Frigatebird that feeds on discards). In this paper, we examine the viability of that system considering two sustainability objectives: an economic objective in terms of the profitability of the fishing activity, and a conservation...

Ecoviability for small-scale fisheries in the context of food security constraints ArchiMer
Cisse, Abdoul; Doyen, L.; Blanchard, Fabian; Bene, Christophe; Pereau, J. -c..
This paper applies a stochastic viability approach to a tropical small-scale fishery, offering a theoretical and empirical example of ecosystem-based fishery management approach that accounts for food security. The model integrates multi-species, multi-fleet and uncertainty as well as profitability, food production, and demographic growth. It is calibrated over the period 2006–2010 using monthly catch and effort data from the French Guiana's coastal fishery, involving thirteen species and four fleets. Using projections at the horizon 2040, different management strategies and scenarios are compared from a viability viewpoint, thus accounting for biodiversity preservation, fleet profitability and food security. The analysis shows that under certain...

Is a management framework based on spawning-stock biomass indicators sustainable ? A viability approach ArchiMer
De Lara, Michel; Doyen, Luc; Guilbaud, Therese; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
Fisheries management agencies have to drive resources on sustainable paths, i.e. within defined boundaries for an indefinite time. The viable-control approach is proposed as a relevant method to deal with sustainability. We analyse the ICES precautionary approach (PA) by means of the notion of viability domain, and provide a mathematical test for sustainability. It is found that the PA based on spawning-stock biomass (SSB) and fishing mortality (F) indicators is sustainable only when recruits make a significant contribution to SSB. In this case, advice based upon SSB, with an appropriate reference point, is sufficient to ensure sustainability. In all other cases, SSB is not a sufficient metric of stock productivity and must be complemented with other...

ATP content and viability of spermatozoa drive variability of fertilization success in the Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) ArchiMer
Boulais, Myrina; Soudant, Philippe; Le Goic, Nelly; Quere, Claudie; Boudry, Pierre; Suquet, Marc.
Fertilization of the oocyte is a critical process of sexual reproduction depending among other factors on spermatozoa functionality. Mitochondria participate in many crucial processes for spermatozoa motility and fertilizing ability. The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is characterized by a high inter-individual variability of its reproductive success which has been shown to be partially due to the variability of gamete quality. The present study explored spermatozoa characteristics such as: i) relationships among mitochondrial functionality (ATP content, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species production); sperm viability (percentages of live, dying, and dead); and motility; and ii) their involvement in inter-oyster variability...
