Morphological Changes in the Pregnant Uterus of the Smooth Hound Dogfish Mustelus schmitti Springer, 1939 (Gatuzo) (Condrichthyes, Triakidae): Microscopic Study and Phylogenetic Reproductive Implications International Journal of Morphology
Galíndez,E. J; Díaz Andrade,M. C; Moya,A. C; Estecondo,S.
Elasmobranchs are important, not only as an economic resource but also for their phylogenetic position. Their slow growth and long reproductive cycles, together with the high fisheries pressure exerted, attempt to the knowledge of all biological parameters of species. In this work we analyze the histology of the pregnant uterus of the gatuzo, a viviparous aplacental shark. The mucosa depicts modifications similar to those of placental species and others proper of histotrophism. Likewise, a network-like muscular layer in the mucosa was described for first time in the genus. The presence of vitelline plates in the gut of at term embryos suggests that the maternal supplies are not enough for the big fetus development. The relationships between maternal...

Reproductive characteristics and the weight-length relationship in Anableps anableps (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cyprinodontiformes: Anablepidae) from the Amazon Estuary Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Valéria de Albuquerque; Fontoura,Nelson Ferreira; Montag,Luciano Fogaça de Assis.
The present study analyzed the length-weight relationship and some aspects of the reproductive biology of Anableps anableps from the mouth of the Maracanã River, in the Brazilian state of Pará. The specimens were collected using two 30 m-long gillnets with 15 and 20 mm mesh size, as well as a 1 m-diameter hand net with a 10 mm mesh. A total of 865 specimens were collected, from which an adult sex ratio of 2.12 females per male was recorded (χ² = 13.07; p<0.05). Females presented positively allometric growth, whereas males were negatively allometric. In the additional analyses, the gonads of 371 female specimens were observed microscopically. Gonadal development was classified in three stages: immature (5.0%), maturing (12.0%), and mature (83.0%)....

A macroscopic classification of the embryonic development of the one-sided livebearer Jenynsia multidentata (Teleostei: Anablepidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
López-Rodríguez,Nathalia C.; Barros,Cíntia M. de; Petry,Ana Cristina.
ABSTRACT This study proposes eight stages according to the main discernible changes recorded throughout the embryonic development of Jenynsia multidentata. The development of morphological embryo structures, pigmentation, and changes in tissues connecting mother and embryo were included in the stage characterization. From the fertilized egg (Stage 1), an embryo reaches the intermediary stages when presenting yolk syncytial layer (Stage 2), initial pigmentation of the outer layers of the retina and dorsal region of the head (Stage 3), and the sprouting of the caudal (Stage 4), dorsal and anal fins (Stage 5). During the later stages, the ovarian folds enter the gills, and the body pigmentation becomes more intense (Stage 6), the body becomes elongated (Stage...

Aspectos reprodutivos de Poecilia vivipara (Bloch & Schneider) (Poeciliidae) da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Mendonça,José P.; Andreata,José V..
Poecilia vivipara (Bloch & Schneider. 1801) is a species that lives in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, a coastal lagoon in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The objective of this study was to increase the knowledge about reproductive aspects of P. vivipara population including: the female size when it begins reproduction, the number of offsprings per gestation, embrionary development stages and the number of pregnant females. The results show that P. vivipara reproduces throughout the whole year with its first maturation occurring at 29 mm. The proportion found of females to males was 3:1. Embryos showed four developmental stages until birth with sexual differentiation occurring after 15mm.
