Did ash fall from Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex affect ant abundance and richness in the Patagonian steppe? Ecología austral
Pirk,Gabriela I.
Natural disturbances are important components of ecosystem dynamics. Large scale disturbances produced by volcanoes, have been poorly studied because of their low frequency, the lack of baseline studies due to their unpredictability, the impossibility of replication, and the difficulty of conducting long-term studies to monitor ecosystem recovery. The recent eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex (June 2011), which produced an ash fall covering 24 million ha of Patagonia, provides a unique opportunity of studying this type of disturbance in areas with baseline data. The summer before the ash fall (2011) ant communities were characterized in areas of the Patagonian steppe which were later covered with 4 cm of fine ash. The aim of this study...

Volcanism and arthropods: a review Ecología austral
Elizalde,Luciana.
Volcanic eruptions are natural disturbances that impose multiple changes in ecosystems. Arthropods are among the most diverse organisms on the planet and play key functional roles in all ecosystems. Existing information on the effects of volcanic disturbances on arthropods is scattered. The aim of this review is to fnd generalities in the responses of arthropods from terrestrial and aquatic environments to volcanism. Mainly (1) what effects do volcanic disturbances have on arthropods?, (2) what characteristics make certain species more or less susceptible to volcanic disturbances?, and (3) how do arthropod communities reassemble after a volcanic disturbance? Terrestrial and aquatic arthropods show similar responses to volcanic disturbances. Volcanism can...

Chromis durvillei : une nouvelle espèce de Pomacentridae de l’île de la Réunion (France, océan Indien) et premier signalement pour l’île de Chromis axillaris ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude; Spitz, Jerome; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007 at Reunion Island, 12 specimens of the pomacentrid genus Chromis were collected at sea surface. One of these fishes was a C. chrysura known from the reef Island fauna. The others have enlarged eyes. Among them were one C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), new for the Island fauna, and ten specimens of a new Chromis species, described here under the name C. durvillei. This new species of deep dwelling Chromis is distinguishable by large sized eyes 1.9 to 2.4 in the head length, D. XIII, 12-13, 25 to 26 gill-rakers on the first gill arch, three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, without black or dark brown spot or band on the body, pectorals or caudal peduncle. C. axillaris, C. woodsi, C. unipa, C. okamurai, C....

Une éruption volcanique débusque Neocentropogon profundus (Tetrarogidae, Scorpaenoidei) à l’île de la Réunion (océan Indien) ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude; Spitz, Jerome; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
From the 8(th) to the 11(th) April 2007, at Reunion Island (Indian Ocean), some fish were collected at sea surface after the eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise. Among these were eleven specimens of Neocentropogon profundus (Scorpaenoidei: Tetrarogidae). Six species of this genus have been described: two from the Pacific Ocean, N. japonicus Matsubara, 1943 and N. trimaculatus Chan, 1966; four from the Indian Ocean, N. affinis (Lloyd, 1909) from the Gulf of Martaban, Myanmar, N. aeglefinus (Weber, 1913) from the Halmahera Sea, Timor Sea, probably a junior synonym of N. affinis, N. profundus (Smith, 1958) off Mozambique, and N. mesedai Klausewitz, 1985 from the Mismaris-Trough, Red Sea. The eleven specimens found at Reunion constitute the largest available...

Argyripnus hulleyi a new species of Sternoptychidae (Stomiiformes) from Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude; Spitz, Jerome; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007, nine specimens of Argyripnus (family Sternoptychidae, order Stomiiformes) were among the fish caught at the sea surface at Reunion Island (Indian Ocean). Seven species were described in this genus: A. ephippiatus Gilbert & Cramer, 1897 from Hawaii, A. iridescens McCulloch, 1926 from Australia. A. atlanticus Maul, 1952 from Madeira, A. brocki Struhsaker, 1973 from Hawaii, Argyripnus sp. Yamamoto in Okamura et al., 1982 from Japan, A. electronus Parin, 1992 from the South-east Pacific and A. pharos Harold & Lancaster, 2003 from the Indian Ocean and the central-west Pacific. The Argyripnus from Reunion Island is easily distinguished from the other species by the position of the anus just before the...

Inventaire des poissons récoltés lors de l'éruption volcanique d'avril 2007 du piton de la Fournaise (Ile de la Réunion) ArchiMer
Durville, Patrick; Mulochau, Thierry; Barrere, Alain; Quod, Jean-pascal; Spitz, Jerôme; Quero, Jean-claude; Ribes, Sonia.
An important eruption of Piton de La Fournaise on the Reunion Island started at April 2007. A large number of killed fishes were found floating on the sea infront of lava flows. More than 400 specimens were caught: 81 species for 42 families were identified. In the majority, these were deep species living between -100m and -1000m depth. 47 species are new for the ichthyologic fauna of the Reunion Island and about 12 species are probably new for the Science. This phenomenon, known from Hawaii and Galapagos, was not yet observed at the Reunion Island.
