Comparing Accuracy and Costs of Revealed and Stated Preferences: The Case of Consumer Acceptance of Yellow Maize in East Africa AgEcon
Kimenju, Simon Chege; De Groote, Hugo; Morawetz, Ulrich B..
For quite a while, stated preferences have been a major tool to measure consumer preferences for new products and services. Revealed preference methods, in particular experimental economics, have gained popularity recently because they have been shown to be more incentive compatible, and therefore more accurate. However, this advantage comes at the expense of higher survey costs. In the developing countries with limited funding for research, it is important to determine whether the extra cost can be justified by the extra gain in accuracy. A survey of 100 farmers was carried out in Western Kenya to determine consumer preference for yellow maize using the contingent valuation, choice experiments and experimental auction methods. Experimental auctions...

Finnish Citizens' Attitudes towards Multifunctional Agriculture AgEcon
Hyytia, Nina; Kola, Jukka.
This paper examines Finnish citizens' attitudes towards multifunctional agriculture and further, the connections among these attitudes, consumers' willingness to pay, and some socio economic factors. Attitudinal dimensions were executed by using factor analysis. The respondents (N=1300) were distributed into clusters based on their attitudes. It would be expected that people who have positive attitudes, would also state high values of WTP. Instead, this study suggests that attitudes and open-ended WTP do not have a positive relation. People are willing to support domestic agriculture as a provider of safe and high-quality food. However, a remarkable proportion of Finnish citizens have a positive attitude towards externalities and joint products of...

Do Environmental Services Buyers Prefer Differentiated Rates? A Case Study from the Colombian Andes AgEcon
Moreno-Sanchez, Rocio del Pilar; Maldonado, Jorge Higinio; Wunder, Sven; Borda, Carlos Andres.
Flat user fees in payment for environmental services (PES) schemes promote administrative ease, and are sometimes perceived as egalitarian. However, when environmental service (ES) buyers are heterogeneous in their income and water consumption levels, this may not be optimal, as total payments become too low and services are under-supplied. This paper identifies ES buyer preferences and estimates their willingness to pay (WTP) differentiated fees in an ongoing PES initiative in an Andean watershed in Colombia. Small, flat user payments have recently been introduced to implement incipient watershed protection upstream. Environmental service users fall into two highly heterogeneous categories: smallholder peasants and owners of recreational houses. We...

Farm Animal Welfare, Consumer Willingness to Pay, and Trust: Results of a Cross-National Survey AgEcon
Nocella, Giuseppe; Hubbard, Lionel J.; Scarpa, Riccardo.
Higher animal welfare standards increase costs along the supply chain of certified animal-friendly products (AFP). Since the market outcome of certified AFP depends on consumer confidence toward supply chain operators complying with these standards, the role of trust in consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for AFP is paramount. Results from a contingent valuation survey administered in five European Union countries show that WTP estimates were sensitive to robust measures of consumer trust for certified AFP. Deriving the WTP effect of a single food category on total food expenditure is difficult for survey respondents; hence, a budget approach was employed to facilitate this process.

UK Consumers' Willingness-to-Accept (WTA) GM Food AgEcon
Moon, Wanki; Rimal, Arbindra; Balasubramanian, Siva K..
Our study uses contingent valuation survey data (WTA and WTP) collected in the UK to examine consumers' behavioral intention with regard to GM food. In particular, we characterize respondents who selected "Don't Know" and "Protest" options in WTP questions in terms of what they would do when offered discount for GM food.

Precaution and Protectionism: GM Food and the WTO AgEcon
Rigby, Dan; Burton, Michael P.; Young, Trevor.
The dispute between the US and EU over GM foods at the WTO is examined in terms of the issues it raises about protectionism and environmental protection and precaution. The issue of whether GM, GM Derived and Non-GM foods are equivalent to each other is examined using data from a national choice modelling study in the UK. These categories of food are critical since they underpin the EU's new food labelling regime which it hoped would defuse the WTO dispute. The results are analysed using a Bayesian mixed logit model which allows greater flexibility in the modelling of preference distributions. This is particularly crucial where, as in this case, bi-modal distributions are identified with some indifferent or mildly averse to GM foodtypes while others are...

Grass-Fed versus Organic Dairy Production: Southeastern US Willingness to Pay AgEcon
Wong, Jonathan; Raghunathan, Uthra; Escalante, Cesar L.; Wolfe, Kent.
This paper examines determinants of consumers’ willingness to pay a premium for grass-fed and organic dairy by using a survey data from the southeastern United States. We use ordered and Heckman probit regression techniques to estimate the impact of consumer characteristics on their willingness to pay premiums. The results suggest that some of relevant determinants are: age, income, gender, and geographical variables. This research has important implications for the large dairy industries in Florida and also as provides important information for the growing dairy industries in the rest of the southeastern United States.

Combining Consumer Valuation Research with Sensory Science Techniques: A Laboratory Experiment AgEcon
Gustafson, Christopher R.; Lybbert, Travis J.; Sumner, Daniel A..
In this research, we integrated an experimental auction with sensory science techniques—namely, trained sensory panels used to analyze the sensory attributes of wines—to examine the effects of objective and sensory information in the market for California-produced Cabernet Sauvignons. The experiment permitted observation of consumer valuation for sensory attributes of wine, appellations, expert ratings, and wineries. Participants submitted bids each time they received new information about the wines. The balanced experimental design permits evaluation of the effects of consumer characteristics on attribute valuation. We had 236 people participate in the research, which consisted of nine rounds of bidding and one round of hedonic liking scores. Rounds...

Applying the Payment Card Approach to Estimate the WTP for Green Food in China AgEcon
Tian, Xu; Yu, Xiaohua; Holst, Rainer.
This paper uses a payment card approach to reveal consumers‟ willingness to pay for green food in China. We first present a brief introduction of the payment card approach and introduce several methods to estimate the WTP with payment cards, which we subsequently use to estimate WTP values regarding green vegetables, green meat and green eggs in China. Our results indicate that consumers in big cities are willing to pay a higher premium for green food and that WTP values are relatively higher for more expensive food than for cheaper food. In addition, the ratios of premium to price range mainly between 25% and 50% and WTP values obtained from interval midpoint approach are relatively higher than those calculated by other approaches.

Modeling Willingness to Pay for Land Conservation Easements: Treatment of Zero and Protest Bids and Application and Policy Implications AgEcon
Cho, Seong-Hoon; Yen, Steven T.; Bowker, James Michael; Newman, David H..
This study compares an ordered probit model and a Tobit model with selection to take into account both true zero and protest zero bids while estimating the willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation easements in Macon County, NC. By comparing the two models, the ordered/unordered selection issue of the protest responses is analyzed to demonstrate how the treatment of protest responses can significantly influence WTP models. Both models consistently show that income and knowledge are positive and significant factors, while distance to poorer quality streams and duration of residency are negative and significant factors on WTP.

How Do Restaurants Benefit from Various Components of a Regional Promotion Campaign? AgEcon
Xie, Ran; Isengildina-Massa, Olga; Carpio, Carlos E..
This study analyses the economic value of various components of the Certified South Carolina Grown Campaign from the perspective of participating restaurants. A stated-preference choice experiment was conducted as part of the restaurant survey to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for each campaign component using a mixed logit model. Individual level WTP was calculated in order to explore the relationship between WTP and characteristics of restaurants. Results indicate that three existing components--Labeling, Multimedia Advertising, and "Fresh on the Menu" have significant positive economic value.

Consumers WTP for Wine with Certified Origin: Latent Classes Based on Attitudinal Responses AgEcon
Scarpa, Riccardo; Thiene, Mara; Galletto, Luigi.
This paper investigates preference heterogeneity of wine consumers by using latent class models based on attitudinal questions. Such responses turn out to be an important source of additional information when the goal is to identify different groups of people with a similar wine preference structure. We assume that preferences are latent and the responses to attitudinal questions are the visible effect of this latent heterogeneity. We find evidence of 4 different classes of respondents with similar response patterns. We focus on preferences for a well-known wine, the Prosecco, and sample the population in the area of production. For each preference-class we estimate a class-specific WTP equation for this wine, so as to estimate the class responsiveness of...

WTP and WTA in relation to irrigation development in the Fitzroy Basin, Queensland AgEcon
Rolfe, John; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Estimates of the compensating surplus generated by changes in non-marketed environmental amenities can be estimated using stated preference valuation techniques. These are typically framed in terms of WTP tradeoffs, even if the situation of interest involves a property right vestment that calls for a WTA question. The differences created by the two questioning formats are explored in this paper using the results of two choice modelling applications. Both applications were framed on the potential for irrigation development and environmental losses in the Fitzroy River Basin, Central Queensland. The scenarios used in the applications differed only in that they used alternatively WTP and WTA questioning formats. The results indicate that robust models could...

WTP and WTA for Non-GM and GM Food: UK Consumers AgEcon
Moon, Wanki; Balasubramanian, Siva K.; Rimal, Arbindra.
In a survey of UK consumers, we elicited their willingness-to-accept (WTA) a discount for GM foods and willingness-to-pay (WTP) a premium for non-GM foods in order to assess their valuation of the non-GM characteristic in food products. Mean WTA exceeds mean WTP, a finding that suggests the valuation of the non-GM characteristic reflects an endowment effect, imperfect substitutability between GM and non-GM foods, or both. Regression results show that perceived risks (benefits) associated with GM foods significantly increase (decrease) WTA and WTP estimates. Additional regression models using the difference between WTA and WTP as the dependent variable indicate that risk (benefit) perceptions increased (decreased) the discrepancy between WTA and WTP...

The Value of EU Agricultural Landscape AgEcon
Pavel, Ciaian; Gomez y Paloma, Sergio.
The present paper provides a meta-analysis of agricultural landscape valuation studies and through the estimated benefit transfer function it projects the value of EU landscape. The analyses are based on information from more than thirty European and Non-European studies which use stated preference approach to uncover the society's willingness to pay (WTP) for landscape. Our calculations show that, the per hectare WTP in EU varies between 89 and 169 €/ha with an average value of 142 €/ha in 2009. Further the calculations indicate that the total value of EU landscape in 2009 is estimated to be in the range of €16.1 – 30.8 billion per year, with an average of €25.8 billion, representing around 7.5 percent of the total value of EU agricultural production and...

Reclaimed Wastewater and the WTP to avoid Summer Water Restrictions: Incorporation Endogenous Free-riding Beliefs AgEcon
Dupont, Diane P..
Climate change may cause more frequent seasonal water shortages. Water-scarce countries already use reclaimed household wastewater for subsequent uses that do not require potable water. Views on the degree of acceptability of reusing wastewater and a distrust of one’s water provider may deter countries like Canada and the United Kingdom from adopting these technologies. This paper reports on results from a 2009 Canadian Internet-based contingent valuation study. Two water management programs were presented: a program to reduce summer water use through water restrictions and a program to allow citizens to avoid summer water restrictions through the use of reclaimed household wastewater. The paper estimates the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for the second program...

Beach Quality and Recreational Values: A Pictorialized Stated Preference Analysis of Residents and Tourists AgEcon
Penn, Jerrod; Hu, Wuyang; Cox, Linda J.; Kozloff, Lara.
Much of Hawaii’s economy relies on its unique marine environments, which are threatened by degradation from stormwater runoff. Using a stated preference method of choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis, based on stylized photographs, this study examines both residents’ and visitors’ marginal value for levels of attributes associated with Hawaiian beach recreation. Each attribute (sand quality, water quality, congestion and water safety conditions) was significant for both residents and tourists, with water quality being the single most important attribute. There is little distinction between resident and tourist marginal value, except for a greater value lost for below average water quality among tourists.
