Can nesting waterbirds influence the community structure of macroinvertebrates in southern Brazilian intermittent wetlands? Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Zardo,Daniela C.; Souza,Marcela M.; Pires,Mateus M.; Stenert,Cristina; Maltchik,Leonardo.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this study was to test the effect of the presence of nesting waterbirds on the taxonomic structure (richness, abundance and composition) of macroinvertebrate communities in southern Brazilian wetlands. Macroinvertebrate communities were seasonally sampled in eight intermittent wetlands differing according to the occurrence of nesting colonies of waterbirds (four with the presence of rookeries; four without). The influence of nutrients and water and sediment physicochemical variables on macroinvertebrate communities was also assessed. The community structure of aquatic macroinvertebrates was not affected by the presence of colonies of nesting waterbirds. Rather, macroinvertebrate communities varied seasonally and they were...

Simultaneous use of strontium:calcium and barium:calcium ratios in otoliths as markers of habitat: Application to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour basin, South West France ArchiMer
Tabouret, Helene; Bareille, G.; Claverie, F.; Pecheyran, C.; Prouzet, Patrick; Donard, O. F. X..
Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in water from the Adour estuary show a clear relationship with the salinity of the surrounding water for salinities <20, while ratios are almost constant above this level of salinity. A Positive relationship was observed for the Sr:Ca ratio, whereas it was inverse for the Ba Ca ratio. These two elemental ratios were measured in the otoliths of the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L) using femtosecond laser ablation linked to an ICP-MS (fs-LA ICP-MS) There was a direct relationship between the elemental ratios recorded in eel otoliths and those found in water from fresh and marine areas, suggesting that Sr Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in eel otoliths can be used as markers of habitat in this estuary Continuous profiling allowed the...

Waterborne nickel bioaccumulation in Gammarus pulex: Comparison of mechanistic models and influence of water cationic composition ArchiMer
Lebrun, Jeremie D.; Perret, Marine; Uher, Emmanuelle; Tusseau-vuillemin, Marie-helene; Gourlay-france, Catherine.
The biodynamic and saturation models offer promising lines of enquiry to predict the bioaccumulation of metals by aquatic organisms. However, in order to construct these models, the accumulation strategies have to be defined for each metal/organism couple in controlled conditions. This study aims at modelling the waterborne bioaccumulation of Ni and the influence of the water's geochemical properties on this process in a crustacean that is widely distributed in Europe, Gammarus pulex. In the laboratory, G. pulex was exposed to several Ni concentrations (from 0.001 to 100 mg L(-1)) in aquatic microcosms. Our results show that G. pulex is very tolerant to Ni (LC50(48 h) = 477 mg L(-1) Ni). Time course experiments enabled the construction of a biodynamic...
