Rational use of water in a poultry slaughterhouse in the state of Paraná, Brazil: a case study REA
Barana,Ana C.; Botelho,Viviani M. B.; Wiecheteck,Giovana K.; Doll,Maria M. R.; Simões,Deise R. S..
Agroindustries are major consumers of water. However, to adapt to environmental trends and be competitive in the market, they have sought rational use of water through water management in their activities. Cleaner Production can result in economic, environmental and social benefits, and in actions that promote reduction in water consumption. This case study was conducted in a slaughterhouse and poultry cold storage processing plant and aimed to identify points of excessive water consumption, and to propose alternatives for managing water resources by reducing consumption. Consumption data are presented in relation to the processing stages with alternatives proposed for the rational use of water, such as closure of mains water during shift changes....

COMPARISON OF ARROWROOT (Maranta arundinacea) AND CASSAVA STARCH EXTRACTION IN SEPARATION, CONCENTRATION, AND PURIFICATION USING A ROTATING SIEVE UNDER WATER REA
Fabiano,P. Branco; Marney,P. Cereda; Marco,H. Naka.
ABSTRACT Brazil is home to several plant species that exhibit potential for starch extraction. The arrowroot plant stands out owing to its South American origin. Arrowroot starch is especially important for fine confectionery, which is a high-value niche market. Thus, a small producer could benefit from the high prices of arrowroot starch. However, to have consistent production, the extraction should be performed using simple, safe, and inexpensive equipment. Starch extraction involves disintegration of the raw material under water, followed by the separation of fibrous bagasse from the starch–water suspension. This study presents an equipment design based on the concept of appropriate technology that is suitable for small producers to extract starch. A...

Palau,Carmen V.; Peralta,Iban B.; Manzano,Juan; Azevedo,Benito M. de; Bomfim,Guilherme V. do.
ABSTRACT As the correct measurement is an essential part of water management, this study describes the metrological behaviour of a range of bulk water meters under different installation configurations. The meters analysed included the horizontal and vertical Woltman, singlejet, tangential and proportional. Configurations included straight pipe lengths; gate and butterfly valves at different degrees of closure, rotations and distances from the meter; meter with volumetric and reducing valves; reverse installation; and meter rotated 90° from the horizontal setting. The metrological behaviour under different flow conditions was analysed by comparison with electromagnetic and volumetric meters (ISO-4064). The horizontal Woltman showed no permissible errors...

Quality of papaya hybrid grown under different irrigation depths REA
Silva,Mônica S. da; Melo,Alberto S. de; Pedroza,Juarez P.; Gomes,Josivanda P.; M. Júnior,Sebastião de Oliveira.
Irrigation is a practice widely used in fruit production in the Brazilian Northeast region, including in the papaya crop in order to increase their productivity. For the purpose of knowing the productive potential of papaya hybrid irrigated, an experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the performance of a papaya hybrid under different irrigations depths. Four irrigation depths (50, 75, 100 and 125% of ETo) were tested and the reference evapotranspiration was calculated by the Penman-Monteith model. The hybrid papaya used was UENF/Caliman 01, which was planted in single rows, spaced 4 x 2m from each other, and irrigated by dripping. The experimental design in randomized blocks was used with six replications and three plants per plot. The following...

Evapotranspiration and crop coefficient of basil determined by weighing lysimeters Horticultura Brasileira
Martins,Izabela P; Faria,Rogério T de; Palaretti,Luiz F; Santos,Miquéias G dos; Fischer Filho,João Alberto.
ABSTRACT The basil (Ocimum basilicum) crop is of great importance for trading as fresh or dried condiment for human consumption and essential oil for pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Water excesses and deficits can affect biomass production of plants, making it necessary to use the correct amount of water for each crop. Considering that determinations of water consumption and cultivation coefficients for medicinal plants are scarce, the aim of this study was determining evapotranspiration and crop coefficients of basil using lysimeters. The crop evapotranspiration was determined by weighing lysimeters for the replacements of 100, 75 and 50% of the maximum daily evapotranspiration. The reference crop evapotranspiration was estimated by the...

Residential Water Consumption: A Cross Country Analysis AgEcon
Grafton, R. Quentin; Kompas, Tom; To, Hang; Ward, Michael B..
Survey data from over 1,600 households in ten countries were used to analyse the determinants of residential water demand. Results show that in every country the price elasticity is negative and statistically significant. Households that do not have to pay for the water they use (volumetric water charges) consume about a third more water than similar households that do have to pay such charges. Consumers’ attitudes do not have a statistically significant effect on total water use, although they do increase the probability of households using some water saving behaviours. Volumetric water charges also have an impact on the adoption of water saving actions. Full-cost water pricing appears to be a highly effective instrument to manage residential water...

Matriz de intercambios de agua. Analisis mediante la Teoria de Grafos AgEcon
Alonso, Esther Velazquez.

Moraes,PO; Ceron,MS; Borille,R; Gianluppi,RDF; Lovato,GD; Cardinal,KM; Ribeiro,AML.
ABSTRACT The experiment was conducted to study the effect of pure glycerin supplementation (GLYC) in the drinking water of broilers subjected to heat stress and feed restriction. Water with 0, 1, or 2% glycerin was provided ad libitum to broilers in six hours of feed restriction. The birds were housed in two environments: thermoneutral (TN) - 25 ° C, and cyclic heat stress (HS) - 12h with 250C, 6h with 320C, 3h of 250 to 320C and 3h of 320 to 250C. The experimental design was randomized in a factorial arrangement of 2 x 3 + 2, with three GLYC levels, two environments and one control group with ad libitum feeding each environment. When submitted to HS, broiler receiving 2% glycerin presented higher weight gain (WG), water consumption (WC), feed intake (FI)...

Construction and calibration of weighing lysimeters with an automated drainage system AGRIAMBI
Sanches,Arthur C.; Souza,Débora P. de; Mendonça,Fernando C.; Maffei,Rodolfo G..
ABSTRACT Quantification of the drained volume is one of the difficulties involved in using weighing lysimeters. Typically, this volume is measured by accessing a moat at the base of a lysimeter. However, it is not feasible to install the moat in small devices. Thus, the aim of this study involves developing, installing, calibrating, and checking the efficiency of small weighing lysimeters with automated drainage systems to test their functionality in field conditions. Each lysimeter is composed of a round PVC water tank with a diameter of 1.22 m and a depth of 0.58 m that is placed over a metal frame with three electronic load cells with the nominal capacity of each cell corresponding to 500 kg. The drainage system is composed of a small reservoir with a...

Silva,Claudete Maria da; Furtado,Dermeval Araújo; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Saraiva,Edilson Paes; Pereira,Walter Esfrain; Guimarães,Mércia Cardoso da Costa.
The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of three genetic groups of confined goats by image monitoring using nine unneutered goats of the Azul, Graúna and Moxotó genotypes. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement (genetic groups × periods - morning, afternoon and night), with three replications. Animals were monitored by video cameras placed at the ceiling of each stall for 10 days. There were interaction factors in the frequency of behavioral categories: interaction with the trough, self-cleaning, standing bipedally, social interaction, and other activities. Azul, Graúna and Moxotó native goats kept in the same environment under the same system of containment and feeding show different frequencies...

Evapotranspiration mapping of commercial corn fields in Brazil using SAFER algorithm Scientia Agricola
Venancio,Luan Peroni; Mantovani,Everardo Chartuni; Amaral,Cibele Hummel do; Neale,Christopher Michael Usher; Filgueiras,Roberto; Gonçalves,Ivo Zution; Cunha,Fernando França da.
ABSTRACT SAFER (Simple Algorithm for Evapotranspiration Retrieving) is a relatively new algorithm applied successfully to estimate actual crop evapotranspiration (ET) at different spatial scales of different crops in Brazil. However, its use for monitoring irrigated crops is scarce and needs further investigation. This study assessed the performance of SAFER to estimate ET of irrigated corn in a Brazilian semiarid region. The study was conducted in São Desidério, Bahia State, Brazil, in corn-cropped areas in no-tillage systems and irrigated by central pivots. SAFER algorithm with original regression coefficients (a = 1.8 and b = –0.008) was initially tested during the growing seasons of 2014, 2015, and 2016. SAFER performed very poorly for estimating corn...

Irrigation water consumption modelling of a soilless cucumber crop under specific greenhouse conditions in a humid tropical climate Ciência Rural
Salcedo,Galo Alberto; Reca,Juan; Pérez-Sáiz,Mónica; Lao,María Teresa.
ABSTRACT: The irrigation water consumption of a soilless cucumber crop under greenhouse conditions in a humid tropical climate has been evaluated in this paper in order to improve the irrigation water and fertilizers management in these specific conditions. For this purpose, a field experiment was conducted. Two trials were carried out during the years 2011 and 2014 in an experimental farm located in Vinces (Ecuador). In each trial, the complete growing cycle of a cucumber crop grown under a greenhouse was evaluated. Crop development was monitored and a good fit to a sigmoidal Gompertz type growth function was reported. The daily water uptake of the crop was measured and related to the most relevant indoor climate variables. Two different combination...

Substrates and irrigation levels for growing desert rose in pots Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Colombo,Ronan Carlos; Favetta,Vanessa; Silva,Marcelo Augusto Aguiar e; Faria,Ricardo Tadeu de.
ABSTRACT In the past decades, desert rose has become a very popular ornamental plant, especially among collectors, due to its exotic and sculptural forms. However, it has been grown on a commercial scale only recently, and little is known about how to best manage it as a container-grown plant, or even which potting medium (substrate) to recommend. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between potting media and irrigation levels for growing desert rose as a potted ornamental plant. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a 6 x 2 factorial arrangement with six replications, six potting media and two irrigation levels. The mixes were characterized by measuring their physical properties, specifically the density and...
