Variation in environmental characteristics of waters among Amazon coast oyster culture units Acta Amazonica
SAMPAIO,Dioniso de Souza; SANTOS,Maria de Lourdes Souza; TAGLIARO,Claudia Helena; BEASLEY,Colin Robert.
ABSTRACT Oyster culture has benefited traditional coastal communities along the Amazon macrotidal mangrove coast of Pará state in Brazil since 2006. Currently, seven oyster culture units in five municipalities are expanding production, but with no environmental monitoring, which is important for the control of the impacts of oyster culture on waters as well as for oyster management and conservation. Seasonal variation in environmental characteristics of the water was evaluated at all oyster culture units in Pará, from September to November 2013 (dry season) and February to April 2014 (wet season), to generate baseline data to evaluate future impacts and aid strategic planning, such as diversifying seed production. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH,...

Oliveira,Sarah Ragonha de; Souza,Rondon Tatsuta Yamane Baptista de; Nunes,Érica da Silva Santiago; Carvalho,Cristiane Suely Melo de; Menezes,Glauber Cruz de; Marcon,Jaydione Luíz; Roubach,Rodrigo; Ono,Eduardo Akifumi; Affonso,Elizabeth Gusmão.
Poor water quality condition has been pointed out as one of the major causes for the high mortality of ornamental fishes exported from the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The purpose of the current study was to define water quality standards for cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), by establishing the lower and higher for lethal temperature (LT50), lethal concentration (LC50) for total ammonia and nitrite and LC50 for acid and alkaline pH. According to the findings, cardinal tetra is rather tolerant to high temperature (33.3 ºC), to a wide pH range (acid pH=2.9 and alkaline pH=8.8) and to high total ammonia concentration (23.7 mg/L). However, temperatures below 19.6 ºC and nitrite concentrations above 1.1 mg/L NO2- may compromise fish survival especially...

Structure and dynamics of the community of periphytic algae in a subtropical reservoir (state of São Paulo, Brazil) Acta Botanica
Taniwaki,Ricardo Hideo; Borghi,Tatiana Cintra; Magrin,Albano Geraldo Emílio; Calijuri,Maria do Carmo; Bottino,Flávia; Moschini-Carlos,Viviane.
Much remains to be learned about biological diversity, which constitutes a valuable natural resource. Due to the pressure that human activity has put on natural resources, biodiversity has been reduced, often unbeknownst to those responsible for that activity. Therefore, we aimed to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of periphytic algae in the Itupararanga reservoir, correlating the results with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, as well as with climatic conditions. To that end, five samples were collected at four sampling stations in the Itupararanga reservoir during the year 2010. Aquatic macrophytes were collected with a 156-cm² frame, and the periphytic algae were scraped free of the macrophytes with a brush. Samples...

Small crumbled diet versus powdered diet in restricted feeding management of juvenile Nile tilapia - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v35i2.16767 Animal Sciences
Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Akao, Michael Masaki Freitas; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Oliveira-Segundo, José Nacélio; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
The pellet size of the diet can affect both fish growth performance and the water quality of the rearing units. The present work assessed the effects of feeding juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) a small crumbled diet (SCD; 0.8 mm) on water quality and growth performance. Fish were reared for six weeks in twenty 250-L polyethylene outdoor tanks at a density of 10 juveniles tank-1 (40 fish m-3). There were two feeding rates (standard and restricted) and two types of artificial fish diet (powdered and SCD). The standard feeding rates were reduced by 30% for restricted feeding. The concentrations of free CO2, reactive phosphorus, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite were higher in the full-fed tanks relative to the restricted-fed tanks. In...

Feeding Nile tilapia with artificial diets and dried bioflocs biomass Animal Sciences
Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Rocha Filho, Pedro Roberto Nogueira; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e.
The effects of supplying dried bioflocs biomass to Nile tilapia juveniles were investigated in the present work. Fish were stocked in experimental rearing tanks for eight weeks. Selected variables of water quality, growth performance and effluent quality were evaluated. Fish were given different combinations of artificial diets and biofloc biomass, in wet (in natura) or dry form. As the supply of artificial diet decreased, the allowance of biofloc biomass increased in the same proportion. Biofloc biomass was produced in two 500-L tanks that received daily applications of dry molasses to adjust the C: N ratio of the water to 15: 1. The concentration of nitrite in water was only reduced in the tanks receiving wet bioflocs. The fish growth performance was...

Nile tilapia culture under feeding restriction in bioflocs and bioflocs plus periphyton tanks Animal Sciences
Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e.
Intensive aquaculture systems may cause pollution in water bodies because their effluents have high levels of nutrients. The use of substrates for periphyton and the manipulation of the C: N ratio of water are technologies that can be employed to increase aquaculture yield with environmental sustainability. The present study has aimed at determining whether feeding restriction could stimulate a greater use of natural food in three different Nile tilapia rearing systems (green water, bioflocs and biophyton), without growth performance impairment. There were nine treatments with four replicates each one (36 experimental units). The animals were raised in conventional (green water) tanks, C: N-ratio adjusted tanks (bioflocs) and bioflocs + periphyton...

AQUACULTURAL SYSTEM MANAGEMENT TOOL II: ANALYTICAL AND MANAGERIAL CAPABILITY CIGR Journal
Anyadike, Chinenye Chukwuemeka; Mbajiorgu, Constantine Crowner; Ajah, Genesis Nnaemeka.
One of the major objectives for developing ecosystem models is their application as tools of analysis for complex systems which otherwise would be difficult to analyze using conventional tools such as field experimentation and inventory monitoring. In view of this, the AQUASMAT model, which was developed based on existing ecosystem models theories and coded using the C-sharp language, was used to conduct a modeling study on a static concrete fish tank, to demonstrate its managerial and analytical capabilities. The input variables for model execution were site specific parameters, fish/feed parameters, water quality parameters and management options from selected fish farm in Nigeria. The model simulation was for concrete tanks with surface area of 1 m2 and...

Limnology of the largest multi-use artificial reservoir in NE Brazil: The Castanhão Reservoir, Ceará State Anais da ABC (AABC)
LACERDA,LUIZ D.; SANTOS,JANAÍNA A.; MARINS,ROZANE V.; SILVA,FRANCISCO A.T.F. DA.
Abstract This work reviews the limnology of the largest multi-use reservoir in NE Brazil, the Castanhão Reservoir in Ceará State, during 5 years of an extended drought when the reservoir’s volume decreased from 88% to about 30%. Major physical and chemical parameters of the water column, phytoplankton community, trophic state and sediment geochemistry were monitored, as well as the impact from extensive aquaculture. Water quality of the full reservoir was maintained due to hydrodynamics, which transport nutrients to the hypolimnion of a stratified water column, rendering an oligotrophic state to the reservoir, notwithstanding the large nutrient inputs from aquaculture and irrigated agriculture. However, with the extension of the drought period, the...

FERREIRA,ANA CLARA; PAZ,ESTEFANÍA L.; RUMI,ALEJANDRA; OCON,CAROLINA; ALTIERI,PAULA; CAPÍTULO,ALBERTO RODRIGUES.
ABSTRACT Sinotaia quadrata is a snail native from Asia recorded for the first time in South America in 2009 in central Argentina. In 2015, this species was also found in a lowland stream with different water qualities. Our aims were to contribute to the knowledge of its population ecology and to compare the individuals from the two locations anatomically. Snails were searched at 6 sites, where physicochemical and hydraulic parameters were measured. Biological samples were also taken at two sites (S3 and S4) to study the population traits of S. cf quadrata (density, size structure, fecundity and sex ratio) and to assess the water quality through macroinvertebrates' biological indices (richness, diversity and IBPamp). Physicochemical and biological...
