Extrapolation of regionalization equations for long-term average flow REA
Pruski,Fernando F.; Rodriguez,Renata del Giudice; Pruski,Pedro L.; Nunes,Aline de A.; Rego,Fernando S..
ABSTRACT Knowledge about long-term average flow is essential for planning and managing water resources because it represents the potential water availability. One technique used to determine streamflow is regionalization, but because most gauge stations normally are associated with large drainage areas, the extrapolation of regionalization equations does not accurately represent the water availability; therefore, this method is not recommended. The main objective of the present paper is to propose a new method of estimating water availability that minimizes the risks of extrapolating regionalization equations for long-term average flow. The method is based on the use of a threshold value of the runoff coefficient to obtain the long-term average flow at the...

Low-flow estimates in regions of extrapolation of the regionalization equations: a new concept REA
Pruski,Fernando F.; Rodriguez,Renata Del G.; Nunes,Aline A.; Pruski,Pedro L.; Singh,Vijay P..
ABSTRACT Knowledge of natural water availability, which is characterized by low flows, is essential for planning and management of water resources. One of the most widely used hydrological techniques to determine streamflow is regionalization, but the extrapolation of regionalization equations beyond the limits of sample data is not recommended. This paper proposes a new method for reducing overestimation errors associated with the extrapolation of regionalization equations for low flows. The method is based on the use of a threshold value for the maximum specific low flow discharge estimated at the gauging sites that are used in the regionalization. When a specific low flow, which has been estimated using the regionalization equation, exceeds the...

Improved Water Supply in the Ghanaian Volta Basin: Who Uses it and Who Participates in Community Decision-Making? AgEcon
Engel, Stefanie; Iskandarani, Maria; Useche, Pilar.
We examine access to, use of, and participation in decisions on improved water supply in the Volta basin of Ghana, one of the first countries to introduce a community-based approach to rural water supply on a large scale. While 71 percent of the households interviewed have access to improved water, 43 percent of these continue to use unsafe sources as their main domestic water source. Our results indicate that quality perceptions and opportunity costs play an important role in households’ choice of water source. The effect of prices and income levels on this choice differs according to the pricing system used. Given that supply characteristics such as the location and pricing system affect household decisions to use the improved source, households may try...

A survey of the bacterial diversity in the cup filler of dental chair units BJM
Silva,Vítor; Figueira,Vânia; Figueiral,Helena; Manaia,Célia M.
Water from the cup filler of dental chair units (CFDC) was observed to contain sphingomonads, environmental mycobacteria and methylobacteria, among other minor bacteria. Some of the bacteria detected are recognized opportunistic pathogens. Some of these, tended to persist over time.
