Cuticular n-alkane in leaves of seven Neotropical species of the family Lecythidaceae: a contribution to chemotaxonomy Acta Botanica
Silva,Rejane Maria da; Ribeiro,Rayane de Tasso Moreira; Souza,Renata Janaína Carvalho de; Oliveira,Antônio Fernando Morais de; Silva,Suzene Izídio da; Gallão,Maria Izabel.
ABSTRACT Biosynthesized from very long-chain fatty acid wax precursors, n-alkanes make a valuable contribution to the taxonomy of plants. The alkane components of foliar epicuticles of seven Neotropical species of Lecythidaceae were investigated: Bertholletia excelsa, Cariniana legalis, Couroupita guianensis, Eschweilera alvimii, Eschweilera ovata, Gustavia augusta and Lecythis pisonis. Specimens were collected in the metropolitan area of Recife, Pernambuco, and their n-alkane fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography. The chemical relationships among the species were then evaluated using cophenetic correlation and UPGMA. Among the seven species, a total of 15 n-alkanes, with 21-35 carbon atoms, were identified and formed a consistent group of B....

Post-harvest conservation of Passiflora alata fruits under ambient and refrigerated condition Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
RINALDI,Maria Madalena; DIANESE,Alexei de Campos; COSTA,Ana Maria; ASSIS,Débora Figueiredo de Oliveira da Silva; OLIVEIRA,Thayrine Almeida Rodrigues de; ASSIS,Samara Figueiredo de Oliveira.
Abstract Brazil is the world's largest producer of passion fruit, a perishable fruit with reduced post-harvest shelf life, which limits its commercialization. For sweet passion fruit, Passiflora alata, there is little information about its postharvest conservation and shelf life under different storage conditions. Thus, the objective of the present study was to determine the post-harvest conservation of P. alata fruits packed on styrofoam trays rapped with 10 μm PVC film and HDPE 30 μm thick, coated with 18% carnauba wax and without any packaging; stored under ambient conditions (25 °C and 70% relative humidity) and refrigerated (10 °C and 90% relative humidity) for 14 days. The best results were obtained with P. alata fruits packaged on styrofoam trays...

Tegumentary epithelial glands in the abdomen of virgin and physogastric queens of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica Latreille (Meliponini: Trigonina) Neotropical Entomology
Abdalla,Fábio C.; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da; Gracioli,Luciana F..
In the eusocial worker bees, portions of the epithelium of the abdominal epidermis may become hypertrophied and glandular, and produce the wax used to build the brood alveoli. In meliponine bees, the presence of similar epithelium was already observed in the queens, but its function is still unknown. Would this epithelium have homologous function in the workers? May the queens display other functions, besides reproduction, related to those considered exclusive of workers? In order to contribute to solve these questions, a histological and ultrastructural study of the tegumentary epithelial glands of the third tergite was carried out in virgins and physogastric queens of Scaptotrigona postica Latreille. The glandular tegumentary epithelium was easily...
