Mitochondrial DNA single nucleotide polymorphism associated with weight estimated breeding values in Nelore cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Biase,Fernando Henrique; Meirelles,Flávio Vieira; Gunski,Ricardo; Vozzi,Pedro Alejandro; Bezerra,Luiz A.F.; Vila,Reginaldo A.; Rosa,Artur J.M.; Lôbo,Raysildo B.; Martelli,Lúcia.
We sampled 119 Nelore cattle (Bos indicus), 69 harboring B. indicus mtDNA plus 50 carrying Bos taurus mtDNA, to estimate the frequencies of putative mtDNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and investigate their association with Nelore weight and scrotal circumference estimated breeding values (EBVs). The PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to detect polymorphisms in the mitochondrial asparagine, cysteine, glycine, leucine and proline transporter RNA (tRNA) genes (tRNAasn, tRNAcys, tRNAgly, tRNAleu and tRNApro). The 50 cattle carrying B. taurus mtDNA were monomorphic for all the tRNA gene SNPs analyzed, suggesting that they are specific to mtDNA from B. indicus cattle. No tRNAcys or tRNAgly polymorphisms were...

Analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism in the kappa-casein gene related to weight expected progeny difference in Nellore cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Biase,Fernando H.; Garnero,Analia Del V.; Bezerra,Luiz A.F.; Rosa,Arthur J.M.; Lôbo,Raysildo B.; Martelli,Lúcia.
Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) has been detected at the bovine kappa-casein locus. The polymorphism has been analyzed for its effects in cattle production, mostly for milk traits and even for maternal effect on pre-weaning weights. We used polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to genotype 408 Nellore animals for the non-silent mutation (Thr/Ile136 and Asp/Ala148) that characterizes the A and B variants of the polymorphism and compared expected progeny difference (EPD) for a maternal effect on 120 and 210 days weights and direct EPD for 120, 210, 450 and 550 day weight between AA and AB animals. The EPD values were obtained from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) Nellore Cattle Breeding Program,...

La production chez les crustacés. Rôle dans les écosystèmes et utilisations ArchiMer
Khmeleva, N; Goloubev, A.
This monograph is the first to state by a systematic research the rules which control the production of the organic losses in shape of eggs and exoskeletons during the life of Crustacea. The weight and the energy content of the material thrown out are the chief criteria selected to characterize the germinal production, relative to the egg-mass, and the exuvial production, relative to the organic fraction of the exoskeleton. The determination of these parameters, at the level of the organism or of the population, takes into account the systematic position of the animals, the duration of their intermolt periods, fecundity and other indices in relation to environmental factors. The loss of matter and energy with reproduction and molting(studied for different...

Characteristics of one sea winter Atlantic salmon stock caught on Elorn river from 1974 to 1984 ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
From observations gathered on grilse populations sampled during the fishing period (March -mid-June) or after the fishing season, the authors noted: a strong heterogeneity and length, the mean value of which increase from May to December, a sex-ratio not different from 1 male for 1 female, a high relative fecundity superior to those of spring salmon population sampled. The comparison between fish of local and foreign origins did not allow to observe significant differences between the biological characteristics studied (weight, length, sex-ratio and fecundity).

Comparaison de cinq indices alimentaires utilises dans l'analyse des contenus stomacaux ArchiMer
Rosecchi, E; Nouaze, Y.
Compound indices are often used in the analysis of fish stomach contents to characterize diet. Five of these indices, combining two or three measures of prey importance: weight, abundance and frequency of occurrence, are mathematically compared in this work. Data from a feeding study of sparid fish show that different indices can produce different results. Four classifications of food, in terms of preferences, are applied to Sparidae, compared and discussed. A new method of classifying the prey of fish into groups is proposed. It characterizes the main items in the diet, whatever feeding index is chosen for the analysis.

Head Circumference in Canadian Male Adults: Development of a Normalized Chart International Journal of Morphology
Nguyen,A.K.D; Simard-Meilleur,A. A; Berthiaume,C; Godbout,R; Mottron,L.
Macrocephaly has been reported as one of the few physiological markers of several syndromes which are identified during childhood. However, only a limited number of studies have investigated whether macrocephaly persists in adults in these conditions, due to an absence of up-to-date reference charts constructed for typically developing adults. Available adult head circumference reference charts either don't measure individuals beyond 21 years of age, are outdated, mostly use homogeneous samples and most importantly do not account for the individual's height and weight at the same time. Two hundred twenty-one male adults were recruited in a large urban community. For each participant, height, weight and head circumference were measured. A significant...

The Effect of Walnut on the Weight, Blood Glucose and Sex Hormones of Diabetic Male Rats International Journal of Morphology
Ghorbani,R; Mokhtari,T; Khazaei,M; Salahshoor,M. R; Jalili,C; Bakhtiari,M.
Diabetes leads to reproductive dysfunctions by producing free radicals. It seems that using walnut can be effective in the damage induced by diabetes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of walnut consumption on sex hormones in diabetic Wistar male rats induced by STZ (streptozotocin). Diabetes animals were induced by STZ (60 mg/kg). Rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=6), including normal diet and healthy (Sham), Diabetic by normal diet (control) and diabetic by 6, 9 and 12% walnut in their diet (experimental groups), and were examined for 6 weeks. Body weight, blood glucose (3 times), and sex hormones (testosterone, FSH and LH) were measured. Overall, in terms of the mean index, there was a significant difference in the...

Study of Wistar Rats Heart at Different Stages in the Evolutionary Cycle International Journal of Morphology
De Carvalho,C. A. M; Thomazini,J. A.
The rat is probably the most commonly used animal in scientific research. There are many benefits to its use such as: ability to work a large number of animals allowing greater statistical validity, the relatively short life cycles. However, the scant literature regarding the anatomy and morphology of these animals is also old and not very descriptive. The objective of this research is to study the macroscopic morphometric aspects of several parameters that have not been described yet regarding the heart of Wistar rats in different phases of their lives. Thirty-six adult male and female rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighting 150-770 g were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups. The heart was then carefully dissected and removed from the chest. After this...

Effects of Sucralose Ingestion on Fetal and Placental Weights and Umbilical-Cord Length: Experimental Study International Journal of Morphology
Rodero,Ademir B; Batigália,Fernando; Azoubel,Reinaldo; Moura,Arianne Assis; Rodero,Lucas de Souza; Silveira Jr,Landulfo.
Sucralose is a sweetener of general use in over three thousand products (beverages, foods and medical diets), with utilization currently permitted for the general population in more than 80 countries, including for women of reproductive age. There is little information on the safe use of sucralose, and experimental studies have suggested that the administration of some sweeteners, by diverse routes, retards not only fetal and placental development but also umbilical cord size. The present study aimed to estimate the fetal and placental weights and umbilical-cord length in fetuses from rat dams, after ingestion and non-ingestion of sucralose. In the treated group (5 dams), sucralose was administered (via gavage) at the dose of 30 mg/kg/day, from the 10th to...

da Costa,Ricardo Lopes Dias; Quirino,Celia Raquel; Afonso,Vivian Alves Costa; Pacheco,Aline; Beltrame,Renato Travassos; Madella-Oliveira,Aparecida de Fátima; Costa,Aline Mineiro; da Silva,Roberto Machado Carneiro.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of period of the year, year of the birth, sex and age on morphometric indices, such as body capacity, body indices, body side indice, anamorphosis indice, compactness indice and body proportionality indice. The correlation between these characteristics was calculated. Santa Ines sheep offspring from the birth to 12 months-old, at the Estado do Rio de Janeiro were used. Measurements were obtained from animals under an extensive scheme within three years of study totaling 2,601 observations. In this work, the year of birth, sex, animal age and triple interaction between these effects have influenced (P<0.05) morphometric indices. According to body and compactness indices averages also was verified that the...

Liveweight and Chest Girth Correlation in Commercial Sheep and Goat Herds in Southwestern Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Olatunji-Akioye,A. O; Adeyemo,O. K.
The correlation between chest girth and weight of sheep and goats have been studied as a predictive guide in homestead farms where equipment to definitively quantify the weight of animals are unavailable and inaccessible. The livestock markets in the South Western part of Nigeria are still very underdeveloped and consist of peasant farmers taking their few animals to more developed areas to offer them for better prices to the consumer or middle men who are in the trade to attain the best profit. Twenty each of sheep and goats were randomly selected in herds from three different commercial locations and evaluated using weight and chest girth measurements as indices. Mean weight for the 3 groups of sheep was between 19.8 and 31.15kg, while for the 3 groups...

Changes in Morphological Characteristics During the Period 2005 2014 in a Sample of Serbian 7 - Year-Old Children International Journal of Morphology
Pavlica,Tatjana; Rakic,Rada; Sironjic,Tijana.
Morphological characteristics of children commonly imply the processes of growth and development. Information on children's growth in height and their body weight is often used as the indicator of the children's health and nutritional status. As the parameters are changeable both temporally and spatially, it is important to provide their continual assessment. The aim of the study is to investigate the changes in morphological characteristics in a sample of Serbian 7-year-old children in the period 2005 2014. The data was gathered from medical documentation recorded in the period 2005-2014 in the local health-care centre "Dr Dusan Savic Doda" in Beocin, which is situated in the central part of the province Vojvodina, the north-west part of Serbia. Growth of Critically Endangered annual fish Austrolebias wolterstorffi (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) at different temperatures Neotropical Ichthyology
Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Sampaio,Luís André; Romano,Luís Alberto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Given the importance of knowledge of the biology of endangered species for the planning of conservation and management efforts, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of temperature on the growth of Austrolebias wolterstorffi (Ahl, 1924). To clarify the thermal influence on the growth of the species, temperatures of 16, 20, 24 , and 28°C were tested in triplicate. The present study showed that a water temperature of 28°C is detrimental to the growth of the species. Among the other tested temperatures, it was found that the optimum temperature for growth decreases as an individual ages and is slightly lower for females. It was demonstrated here that males reach a higher weight and length, and grow faster than females, reaching sexual...
