The mysid-feeding guild of demersal fishes in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde estuary OMA
Hostens, K.; Mees, J..
The demersal fish fauna of the mesohaline zone of the Westerschelde estuary (south-west Netherlands) was sampled intensively in the period 1990-1992. Almost 500 beam trawl samples were taken in both subtidal (330 samples) and intertidal (144 samples) habitats. These yielded 44 fish species, mostly as juveniles. The area functioned as a nursery for several demersal fish species, and harboured large populations of hyperbenthic mysids. Three gobies, three flatfish, one clupeoid and one gadoid dominated the fish fauna, while three mysid species were important components of the holohyperbenthos. From c. 1500 stomach contents of 25 fish species, 44 prey species were identified, the most abundant of which were also common in the hyperbenthal. The demersal fish...

<i>Echinoderes higginsi</i> sp. n. (Kinorhyncha, Cyclorhagida) from the southern North Sea with a key to the genus <i>Echinoderes</i> Claparède OMA
Huys, R.; Coomans, A..
Echinoderes higginsi sp.n. is described from shallow subtidal sand north of the mouth of the Westerscheldt estuary, The Netherlands. The species is compared with other species having the same spine formulac. It appears to be most closely related to E. kristenseni Higgins. 1983 and, to a lesscr extent. to E. riedli Higgins, 1966. Condyldres multispinosus (McIntyre. 1962) is reported from the same locality, the first report of this centroderid kinorhynch since the original description. Some additional information on E. levunderi Karling, 1954 is presented. The presence of lateroventral adhesive tubes on the fourth segment, lateral spines on segment 7 and small additional setae on segment 12 in the male is noted. Echinoderes canariensis Greeff, 1869 and E....

Uptake of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in turbid, tidal estuaries OMA
Middelburg, J.J.; Nieuwenhuize, J..
Ammonium and nitrate uptake was measured in 6 European tidal estuaries (Ems, Rhine, Scheldt, Loire, Gironde and Douro) using 15N-tracer techniques. Uptake rates of ammonium and nitrate ranged from 0.005 to 1.56 µmol N l-1h-1 and 0.00025 to 0.25 µmol N l-1 h-1, respectively, and differed significantly between and within estuaries. Analysis of nitrogen uptake using the relative preferential index (RPI) indicated ammonium to be the preferred substrate. The turnover times of particulate nitrogen (0.7 to 31 d) and dissolved ammonium (0.1 to 27 d) were similar to or shorter than estuarine-water residence times, whereas turnover times of dissolved...
