Quantitative Anatomy of the Trachea of the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) International Journal of Morphology
Cano,Ivana; Pérez,William.
We described the macroscopic and quantitative anatomy of the trachea of the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi). The trachea of one juvenile male giraffe (25 months of age) weighing 754 kg was used in this study. The length of the neck was 125 cm. The trachea had 107 cm in length on its cervical part and 18 cm on its thoracic part. The total number of cartilage was 87.74 at the neck and 13 at the thorax. The general shape of the duct was mostly circular. The separation of the dorsal ends of the tracheal cartilages was pronounced in the first half of the cervical trachea, reducing caudally and overlapping in the thoracic trachea. In the caudal part the trachea had a tracheal bronchus for the cranial lobe of the right lung and the end of the trachea...

Intake and digestion of non-traditional feedstuffs by farmed collared peccary (Mammalia, Tayassuidae) R. Bras. Zootec.
Nogueira-Filho,Sérgio Luiz Gama; Martins,Karen; Borges,Rogério Martins; Mendes,Alcester; Nogueira,Selene Siqueira da Cunha; Bindelle,Jérôme.
ABSTRACT To assess the ability of the collared peccary ( Pecari tajacu ) to digest dietary fiber, four adult male collared peccaries were randomly assigned to a 4 × 4 Latin square design to determine the effects of feeding non-traditional feed ingredients, taken from palm trees with different levels of dietary fiber, on intake and coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) and mean retention time. Four experimental diets were provided ad libitum: corn and soybean meal-based control diet; corn and palm kernel cake-based diet; corn and peach palm byproduct-based diet; and hay, palm kernel cake, and peach palm byproduct-based diet. The CTTAD of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were 0.80±0.09 and 0.61±0.21, respectively....

Electroretinography in eight species of neotropical deer Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Crivelaro,R.M.; Thiesen,R.; Aldrovani,M.; Lima,T.B.; Ortêncio,K.P.; Padua,I.R.M.; Duarte,J.M.B.; Laus,J.L..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to establish normal baseline ERG values of 23 anesthetized deer belonging to 8 neotropical species (Mazama americana, Mazama nemorivaga, Mazama gouazoubira, Mazama nana, Mazama bororo, Ozotocerus bezoarticus, Odocoileus virginianus and Blastocerus dichotomus). Only right eyes were studied. Chemical restraint was performed using xylazine associated with ketamine, IM, for M. americana, M. gouazoubira, M. nemorivaga, M. nana, M. bororo, O. bezoarticus and O. virginianus. A combination of tiletamine/zolazepam diluted in xylazine 2% was used for B. dichotomus individuals. After 20min of dark adaptation, electroretinograms were obtained using a handheld electroretinography (ERG) machine using the QuickRetCheck Protocol at three...

Establishing the hypoosmotic swelling test for sperm analysis in collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Santos,E.A.A.; Sousa,P.C.; Peixoto,G.C.X.; Simão,B.R.; Oliveira,M.F.; Silva,A.R..

Environmental enrichment on the behavior and welfare of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Assis,V.D.L.; Carvalho,T.S.G.; Pereira,V.M.; Freitas,R.T.F.; Saad,C.E.P.; Costa,A.C.; Silva,A.A.A..
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of physical environmental enrichment on the behavior of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). Eighteen birds, nine males and nine females, were monitored in environments enriched with wooden sticks and bead rings and in non-enriched environments, in a completely randomized design. Behavioral categories were grouped into locomotion, maintenance, rest, feed, undesirable activities, and interaction with environmental enrichment. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis of behaviors to produce the ethogram and percentage comparison of frequency values for behavior analysis. Environmental enrichment positively influenced behavioral categories and some behavioral activities of birds.

Evaluation of collared anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla) presented in a wildlife health reference center of São Paulo state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bernegossi,Agda Maria; Rahal,Sheila Canevese; Melchert,Alessandra; Teixeira,Carlos Roberto; Lima,Fábio Henrique; Medeiros,Raphael Duarte; Alves da Silva,Aline.
Abstract Deforestation and road construction have inflicted negative effects on wildlife populations. To contribute to the comprehension and preservation of wildlife species, this study aimed to evaluate collared anteater presented to a reference center located in São Paulo state, Brazil. Furthermore, the locations where the animals were most frequently found were determined. Data on collared anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla) examined at the Center for Medicine and Research in Wild Animals (CEMPAS) were evaluated retrospectively for a period of 13 years. A total of 46 collared anteaters was examined, comprised of 14 males, 10 females, and 22 without identifying information. On average, adult males weigh 4.41 kg while adult females weigh 4.95 kg. The most...
