PRICE EXPECTATIONS AND SUPPLY RESPONSE IN THE THOROUGHBRED YEARLING MARKET AgEcon
Neibergs, J. Shannon; Thalheimer, Richard.
Limited information is available concerning price determination in the thoroughbred yearling market. A recursive model incorporating price expectations and biological constraints is used to estimate supply and demand functions for thoroughbred horses. Empirical results characterize a market with inelastic supply and elastic demand that converges to equilibrium under static conditions. Purses were identified as the most influential variable impacting price. Comparative statics illustrate the effectiveness of purses as a policy instrument for the thoroughbred industry. Federal tax policy also was found to have a significant impact on the decisions to breed or invest in thoroughbred yearlings.

Hedonic Pricing of Race-Bred Yearling Quarter Horses Produced by Quarter Horse Sires and Dams AgEcon
Lansford, Notie H., Jr.; Freeman, David W.; Topliff, Donald R.; Walker, Odell L..
Yearling quarter horse prices are dependent upon a number of characteristics. Quantifiable genetic and macroeconomic variables for 5,295 sales from 1982-92 are used in a hedonic price model. Marginal values and discrete incremental prices are determined for 23 characteristics, 21 of which are found to be significant. The model’s fit implies it may be helpful for maximizing breeder returns. Overall, buyers pay substantial premiums if the yearling’s first dam or sire was a champion and if the sire or first dam previously produced a champion. Likewise, yearlings whose second and third dams are winners and producers of winners receive higher prices. Prices paid for fillies and older yearlings exceed those paid for clots, geldings, and younger horses.

Post-weaning weight gain and pregnancy rate of beef heifers bred at 18 months of age: a meta-analysis approach R. Bras. Zootec.
Canellas,Leonardo Canali; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim; Nunes,Luciana Neves; Oliveira,Tamara Esteves de; Prates,Ênio Rosa; Darde,Daniel Chamorro.
The objective of this study was to evaluate, using meta-analysis, the main factors related to post-weaning body weight and weight gain that affect pregnancy rate of heifers bred at 18 months of age. Data of 1398 beef heifers from six experiments were analyzed as a set. Information related to methodology and results of each experiment were codified in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The independent variables analyzed were: body weight at seven months of age (BW7M), daily weight gain from seven to 12 months (DWG7-12), body weight at 12 months of age (BW12M), daily weight gain from 12 to 15 months (DWG12-15), body weight at 15 months of age (BW15M), daily weight gain from 15 to 18 months (DWG15-18), daily weight gain from 7 to 18 months (DWG7-18) and body...
