Effectiveness of signboard installation at a zoo through cooperation with a university, with a focus on a wild animal,Pteromys volans orii, living in Tokachi, Hokkaido OAK

 日本の動物園は,動物の保全に対する意識と姿勢を養うための教育を強調している.動物園は郷土の動物を通じて動物とのつながりを感じられる場として重要だが,大型の国外産動物が注目されることが多く,郷土の動物の知識や価値が伝え継がれていない.一方,動物園が与える情報の量や質は,来園者の動物に関する知識と保全に対する態度に影響を与える.これを踏まえ,来園者の関心を引く解説板を動物の知見を有する大学が協力して作製することで,動物園の環境教育をより効果的にすると考えられる.帯広畜産大学では郷土の動物「エゾモモンガ」について様々な研究がなされており,多くの知見を有している.そこで本研究では,①大学の持つこれまでの知見を基にエゾモモンガを題材とした解説板を作製・設置し,アンケート調査により解説板設置の効果を検証すること,②結果から,今後の環境教育のあり方について提言することを目的とした.調査の結果,来園者の年代や来園回数,エゾモモンガに対する認知の有無は解説板を見たかどうかに影響しておらず,解説板を見たかどうかが来園者の知識の有無に差をもたらさなかった.一方,男性やエゾモモンガが好きな来園者ほど解説板を見ていたこと,解説板を見た来園者の方が保全に対する意識が高いことが明らかとなった.今後は動物園と大学が連携し,さらなる環境教育の改善と郷土の動物に関する知識の提供を行なうことで,来園者の動物に関する知識の増大と保全に対する意識の向上に寄与できるだろう.

Frequency of parasites and Salmonella infection in captive maned-wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus, kept in Zoos at the State of São Paulo, Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.

Thirty-one captive maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus, Illiger 1815) from 11 Zoos at the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were screened to investigate the presence of parasites and Salmonella infection by parasitological diagnostic methods and fecal selective culture. The most frequent ecto and endoparasites found were Ctenocephalides felis (56.2%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (12.5%), Ancylostoma caninum (45.1%), Strongyloides sp. (29.0%), Uncinaria stenocephala (3.2%), Capillaria sp. (3.2%), Entamoeba sp. (22.9%), Sarcocystis sp. (29.0%), Cryptosporidium sp. (19.3%), Eimeria sp. (19.3%), Giardia sp. (9.6%) and Isospora sp. Tuberculosis determined by Mycobacterium bovis in captive waterbucks (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) in São Paulo, Brazil BJM

Two waterbucks from São Paulo Zoo Foundation exhibited respiratory symptoms in July 2004. After euthanasia, granulommas in lungs and mediastinic lymph nodes were observed. Acid-fast bacilli isolated were identified as Mycobacterium bovis spoligotype SB0121 by PRA and spoligotyping. They were born and kept in the same enclosure with the same group, without any contact to other species housed in the zoo. This is the first detailed description of M. bovis infection in Kobus ellipsiprymnus.
