Oceanologic study of an open coastal area in the Ionian sea with emphasis on its benthic fauna and some zoogeographical remarks ArchiMer
Zenetos, A; Christianidis, S; Pancucci, Ma; Simboura, N; Tziavos, C.
The macrobenthic faunal composition, sedimentology and physical characteristics were investigated in an open coastal area of the Greek Ionian Sea. Hydrographic parameters were recorded at 26 stations using a CTD profiler during nine cruises performed between 1990 and 1991, while benthic samples were collected in November 1990 and April 1991 at 22 stations with the aid of a Ponar grab. Macrobenthic variety indicated an area of high scientific interest : 351 species in all, 18 of which are new to the Creek fauna. Furthermore, 10 species are previously unrecorded in the Eastern Mediterranean. Of the biological indices estimated, species richness was comparable to that of other open Greek areas, while population density seemed to be a function of a) depth and...

Selection of environmental temperature by the yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus Lutz & Mello, 1922 (Scorpiones, Buthidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Hoshino,K.; Moura,A. T. V.; De Paula,H. M. G..
The preferred temperature of the yellow scorpion Tityus serrulatus was investigated since its dispersion is a matter of concern. Adult T. serrulatus, weighing 1.24 + 0.20 g (mean + sd) and with a standard length of 59.3 + 2.5 mm, were used. A metallic corridor (120 cm long, 5 cm large and 10 cm high) with thermal gradient ranging from 0°C to 40°C was used. Tityus serrulatus chose and stayed in temperatures ranging from 14°C to 38°C when safe conditions were offered (dark and thigmotactic stimuli). The number of animals that remained in the 11°C-20°C, 21°C-30°C, and 31°C-40°C temperature zones were 8, 8, and 9, respectively. The chi-square test (degree of freedom = 2) showed that differences were not significant (p>0.05). Some animals moved to lower...

A revision of Choleva agilis (Illiger, 1798) and related species (Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea: Cholevidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
The Choleva agilis-group is revised. The three species are redescribed and their zoogeography is discussed. The phylogeny of the three species is hypothesized. Choleva jailensis Jeannel, 1923 and C. agilis clermonti van der Wiel, 1931 are new synonyms of C. agilis (Illiger, 1798). C. lederiana var. brevicollis Krogerus, 1926, is a new synonym of C. lederiana Reitter, 1901. The cavernicolous taxon gracilenta Szymczakowski, 1957, formerly regarded as a subspecies of C. lederiana, is transferred to C. septentrionis Jeannel, 1923.

Blurring the picture: introductions, invasions, extinctions – biogeography in a global world Naturalis
Nijman, V.; Vonk, R..
Global biogeography and phylogeography have gained importance as research topics in zoology, as attested by the steady increase in the number of journals devoted to this topic and the number of papers published. Yet, in a globalising world, with species reintroductions, invasions of alien species, and large-scale extinctions, unravelling the true biogeographic relationships between areas and species may become increasingly difficult. We present an introduction to the symposium ‘Biogeography: explaining and predicting species distributions in space and time’ held in Amsterdam in 2007, and the resulting papers as published in this special issue, including papers on crustaceans, birds and mammals.

Distribution patterns in Atlantic hydroids Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; López-González, P.J..
The present study is a first attempt to comparing the hydroid faunas of the various Zoogeographie areas of the Atlantic Ocean. We restricted ourselves to species of the orders Antho- and Leptomedusae, of which 1050 species were taken into account. The classification of zoogeographic areas used follows Ekman and Briggs, with slight modifications; thus, the Strait of Gibraltar is here considered as a separate zoogeographic area due to its character of a transition zone between several areas in the Northeastern Atlantic Region. Species were arranged into Zoogeographic groups to compare the faunal composition of the various Zoogeographic areas. The Dice similarity index was used for each comparison. The fauna of North-eastern Region can be split into three...

Die Aciculidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Prosobranchia) Naturalis
Boeters, H.D.; Gittenberger, E.; Subai, P..
Our knowledge concerning the recent and fossil species and subspecies of the Aciculidae is summarized. After some introductionary chapters concerning habitat, anatomy, shell morphology and distribution, both in time and geographical, all taxa are dealt with systematically. In total 56 recent species of Aciculidae are characterized, belonging to Acicula (20), Menkia (1), Platyla (25) and Renea (10). In addition 15 fossil species are recognized, in Acicula (5), Menkia (1), Platyla (6) and Renea (3). Four Acicula species and one Platyla species are known from the Miocene to the Recent. Keys enable the identification down to the subspecies level. Synonymy lists are given. The species and subspecies are described and illustrated. Distributional data are...

Nouvelles données sur le genre Bragasellus (Crustacea: Isopoda: Asellidae) Naturalis
Afonso, Odette; Henry, Jean-Paul; Magniez, Guy.
From now on, the genus Bragasellus Henry & Magniez, 1968 includes 2 oculated and 17 stygobiotic species. As a natural and monophyletic taxonomic unit, we consider it a good genus. Its original area corresponds to the north-west quarter of the Iberian Peninsula. Secondarily, this area has extended eastward, using mainly the alluvial channels of hydrographic systems (Ríos Douro + Ebro and tributaries), finally reaching the underground waters of several Mediterranean rivers. This active expansion is exclusively due to the migration of two stygobiotic sibling species: B. lagari Henry & Magniez, 1973 towards the high basin of the Río Tajo, then downstream to the basins of the Ríos Jucar and Turia (Prov. Valencia); and B. lagarioides n. sp., downstream...

The avifauna of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
The avifauna of the island of Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) is reviewed. Introductory sections, which include a chapter on the history of ornithological discovery, are followed by the main part, a systematic account in which each species and subspecies known from Flores is treated separately. A discussion of the zoogeography, a gazetteer, a list of references and an index complete the volume. At present 214 forms (210 species) are accepted as having been reliably recorded. Of these, ca. 160 are, or may be assumed to be, residents, and of ca. 100 the eggs have been collected and are described. The balance consists of visiting sea and freshwater birds, migrants from the North and migrants from the South. It is likely that few additions remain to be made to...

The zoogeography of the western Palaearctic Tipulidae (Diptera). X. The Tipulidae of the eastern Mediterranean islands Naturalis
Theowald, Br.; Oosterbroek, P..
A discussion is presented about the zoogeography of the Tipulidae known from the eastern Mediterranean islands; 54 nonendemic and 19 endemic species and subspecies are presently known from 25 islands. The non-endemic and endemic Tipulidae fauna of the islands close to Greece and Turkey is very similar to the fauna of the adjacent mainland. Older endemic as well as more widespread but relict species are found especially on the southern Aegean islands and on Cyprus. The Tipulidae fauna of the Kikládhes apparently is at large of quite recent, probably late Pleistocene origin.

Materials for a more stable subdivision of the genus Uca Leach Naturalis
Beinlich, B.; Hagen, H.O. von.
The debate on a proper subdivision of the large genus Uca was initiated by the conflicting proposals of Bott (1973) and Crane (1975). In spite of recent computer-aided mending attempts, the overall situation (instability of Uca systematics and nomenclature) has not convincingly improved. Here we try to settle the debate by presenting a simple cladistic analysis sensu Hennig (1950) based on selected morphological characters supplemented by functional remarks and a few behavioural data resulting from fieldwork. All 94 species (except six) were examined, mostly by using the authors’ collection of Uca (partly in Marburg and partly deposited in the Leiden Museum) and all species (see list in chapter 5) are assigned to one of the eight subgenera recognized:...

Description of a new species of Bush Warbler of the genus Cettia Bonaparte, 1834 (Aves: Sylviidae) from Yamdena, Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia Naturalis
Rozendaal, F.G..
The use of mistnets in forest on Yamdena (Tanimbar Islands, South Moluccas, Indonesia) revealed the presence of an undescribed bush-warbler of the genus Cettia Bonaparte, 1834. The new species is described and illustrated here and its morphological characters and vocalizations are compared with those of Asian-Pacific congeners in the subgenus Horeites Hodgson, 1845. It is considered most closely related to the Southwest Pacific warblers previously known as Vitia Ramsay, 1875. In addition, the identity of Cettia bivittata Finsch, 1901, is discussed.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the Niphargus transitivus group of species (Crustacea, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Sket, Boris; Notenboom, Jos.
The Niphargus transitivus group includes 12 groundwaterdwelling species. It is defined by an upright body position during locomotion, a small, stout body with short appendages, except for long coxae and dactyli, coxae V-VI equilobate or posterolobate, accessory flagellum subject to reduction, and the body endowed with adaptations for volvation ( = ability to enroll into a ball). The biogeography of this southeastern European group of species is discussed and a cladistic analysis of the group is presented. Some cases of parallel character evolution in groundwater amphipods are mentioned. The inference of biogeographic and phylogenetic information in elucidating the evolutionary history of the group is hampered by inconsistency of the data. One of the...

Hummelinckiella borinquensis, a new genus and species in the subfamily Stephopominae (Caenogastropoda: Siliquariidae) with notes on the genera Caporbis and Stephopoma and the “Blasian subregion” Naturalis
Faber, M.J.; Moolenbeek, R.G..
A new genus and species, Hummelinckiella borinquensis n.gen. & n.sp. has been discovered in sediments from shallow water off Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Grand Turk (Turks & Caicos Islands). Because of the striking sculpture of its protoconch, it is placed in a new genus of the subfamily Stephopominae. The only other known western Atlantic member of the Stephopominae is Stephopoma myrakeenae Olsson & McGinty, 1958 recorded from the eastern Caribbean (Leeward Islands), herewith invalidating the “paciphile” status of this species and genus, and casting doubts on the value of the “Blasian Subregion”, indicated by Petuch (1990) as a biogeographical unit.

Lizards of Brazilian Amazonia (Reptilia: Squamata) Naturalis
Avila-Pires, T.C.S..
Eighty-nine species of lizards, six of which polytypic (forming a total of 97 taxa), are presently known from Brazilian Amazonia. This number includes six species and one subspecies described as new to science in this paper: Stenocercus fimbriatus, Lepidoblepharis hoogmoedi, Leposoma osvaldoi, L. snethlageae, Tretioscincus oriximinensis, Tupinambis longilineus, and Anolis nitens tandai. Stenocercus dumerilii is resurrected from the synonymy of S. tricristatus. Bachia cophias is considered a junior synonym of B. flavescens. B. peruana is a new record from Brazil. Anolis nitens has priority over A. chrysolepis. The Amazonian Tupinambis is shown to be T. teguixin (of which T. nigropunctatus is a junior synonym). The name T. merianae should be used for T....
