Cheilosia griseiventris sensu Stubbs & Falk (1983) new to the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Although already recognized as a distinct species in Britain by Stubbs & Falk (1983), other authors have treated Cheilosia griseiventris (Zetterstedt, 1843) as a (possible) synonym of C. latifrons Loew, 1857. Unpublished taxonomic results indicate that these taxa should be considered as separate species, but also that there may be more than two European species involved. So possibly the name griseiventris is not applied correctly. However, until the taxonomy of the latifrons-complex is fully resolved, we use the name griseiventris. The nine specimens from the Netherlands agree with the British specimens of C. griseiventris. Based on these... |

New and rare hoverflies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae). Paragus albifrons (Fallén), P. bicolor (Fabricius), Sphegina verecunda Collin, Neoascia annexa (O.F. Müller), Callicera aenea (Fabricius), Cheilosia caerulescens (Meigen), C. chloris (Meigen), C. flavipes (Panzer), Chamaesyrphus scaevoides (Fallén), Xylota coeruleiventris Zetterstedt, Merodon rufus Meigen and Eristalis picea (Fallén) are recorded with full details for the first time from The Netherlands. Some of these species have been listed by other authors but without any details. Here additional notes are given on the distribution and biology of these twelve species as well as 49 other more or less rare species. |

The 'real' Brachyopa dorsata in the Netherlands after 39 years (Diptera: Syrphidae) The hoverfly Brachyopa dorsata Zetterstedt, 1837 was already mentioned for the Netherlands by Van Aartsen (1970), based on a specimen from 1968, which later proved to belong to B. panzeri Goffe, 1945. On April 21, 2007, a male B. dorsata was collected from the flowers of Prunus padus in the north-western part of the Veluwe. The locality is part of a large mixed forest complex, dominated by old beeches. This is the first record of B. dorsata for the Netherlands. The species was expected, for it is known from a small number of localities in adjacent parts of Germany. |

The syrphid Microdon myrmicae in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Microdon mutabilis has been present on the Dutch syrphid list for a long time. Schönrogge et al. (2002) described M. myrmicae as a close relative of M. mutabilis, based on characters of the larvae and pupae. In sites of which old records of M. cf. mutabilis existed were visited, to establish the true identity of this species. In two of the eight sites larvae and pupae were found. They could be identified as Microdon myrmicae. Based on this information it is proposed to replace the name Microdon mutabilis for Microdon myrmicae on the Dutch syrphid list. |
