Characterization of water availability in a hydrographic basin REA
Arai,Fabiane K.; Pereira,Silvio B.; Gonçalves,Geula G. G..
The quantitative knowledge of hydrological parameters (rainfall and flow) and their spatial and temporal variability on the regions or basins should be understood as essential to the efficient planning and management of water resources. Because the Ivinhema Basin, located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, represents an important inductor on the region agricultural development, characterized as a major producer of grains and meat, it was used to characterize the hydrological study. Knowing the rainfall, flow and drainage area of each of the studied affluent, it was calculated the proportion of contribution of the affluent. To that end, it was proposed the concepts of potential and real contributions, aiming to identify the proportion of...

Time distribution of heavy rainfall events in Urussanga, Santa Catarina State, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.6664 Agronomy
Back, Álvaro José; Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina.
A knowledge of rainfall time distribution is important for several types of hydrological studies related to surface runoff. This study aims to determine the time distribution pattern of heavy rain events in Urussanga, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. It employed recording rainfall charts from the meteorological station of Urussanga (latitude: 28.31° S, longitude: 49.19° W, altitude: 49 m) from 1980 to 2007. Rain events were classified into four types according to the duration quartile in which the greatest amount of precipitation occurred. It is found that type I rain events are more frequent, followed by type II, and these occur predominantly during the summer, while type III and IV rain events are distributed throughout the year. In the summer, rain events...

Using Sea Surface Temperatures to Predict Seasonal Rainfall over East OceanDocs
Bazira, E..
In East Africa (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania) agriculture sector employs over 80% of the work force and export earnings from the sector constitute a major part of the national budgets. Subsistence farming is the major source of food. However food shortages as well as negative impacts on several sectors of the economies have been attributed to the seasonal weather variations among other factors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the Long-Range prediction potential of seasonal rainfall as derived from SST modes of the neighboring oceans.

Bergamaschi,Homero; Wheeler,Timothy Robert; Challinor,Andrew Juan; Comiran,Flávia; Heckler,Bruna Maria Machado.
This study aimed to establish relationships between maize yield and rainfall on different temporal and spatial scales, in order to provide a basis for crop monitoring and modelling. A 16-year series of maize yield and daily rainfall from 11 municipalities and micro-regions of Rio Grande do Sul State was used. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine associations between crop yield and rainfall for the entire crop cycle, from tasseling to 30 days after, and from 5 days before tasseling to 40 days after. Close relationships between maize yield and rainfall were found, particularly during the reproductive period (45-day period comprising the flowering and grain filling). Relationships were closer on a regional scale than at smaller scales....

The succession dynamics of a macroalgal community after a flood disturbance in a tropical stream from São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Branco,Ciro Cesar Z.; Branco,Luis Henrique Z.; Moura,Maurício Osvaldo; Bertusso,Fernando Rodrigo.
The succession dynamics of a macroalgal community in a tropical stream (20º58' S and 49º25' W) was investigated after disturbance by a sequence of intensive rains. High precipitation levels caused almost complete loss of the macroalgal community attached to the substratum and provided a strong pressure against its immediate re-establishment. After this disturbance, a weekly sampling program from May 1999 to January 2000 was established to investigate macroalgal recolonization. The community changed greatly throughout the succession process. The number of species varied from one to seven per sampling. Global abundance of macroalgal community did not reveal a consistent temporal pattern of variation. In early succession stages, the morphological form of...

Weed emergence in autumn under temperate conditions Planta Daninha
Calado,J.M.G.; Basch,G.; Carvalho,M..
The emergence of weed plants depends on environmental conditions, especially temperature and soil moisture. The latter is extremely important in Mediterranean environments which are characterized by irregular amount and distribution of rain throughout the year, which influences the beginning of the growth cycle of the annual species (seed germination). This paper studies the influence of rainfall, in particular accumulated rainfall in autumn, on the emergence of weed plants. The experiment was carried out on Luvisols, and the appearance of flora under field conditions was observed. Through analysis of the results, it can be concluded that a high percentage of weed plants (> 85% related to the highest registered value) was obtained with more than 90 mm...

POPULATION FLUCTUATION OF Empoasca sp. (HEMIPTERA: CICADELLIDAE) IN A PHYSIC NUT CROP IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL Acta biol.Colomb.
de CARVALHO,Denisar Paggioli; de OLIVEIRA,Harley Nonato.
Physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oilseed, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, whose seeds contain oil that can be processed into a high quality biofuel. However, there have been reports of arthropods feeding from its leaves, including the green leafhopper Empoasca sp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). The large numbers of this insect, observed in certain periods of the year in many regions of Brazil, are causing damage to the oilseed crops. This study aims at evaluating the fluctuation in green leafhopper population in a physic nut crop in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, to assess possible correlations with rainfall, maximum, average and minimum temperatures. This evaluation was conducted between March 2011 and July 2012. The...

Using panel data to estimate the effect of rainfall shocks on smallholders food security and vulnerability in rural Ethiopia AgEcon
Demeke, Abera Birhanu; Zeller, Manfred.
Ethiopia's agriculture is predominantly rainfed and hence any irregularity in weather conditions has adverse welfare implications. Using panel data, this paper analyzes the effect of rainfall shocks on Ethiopian rural households' food security and vulnerability over time while controlling for a range of other factors. To this end, we generated a time-variant household food security index which is developed by principal components analysis. Based on the scores of the index, households were classified into relative food security groups and their socioeconomic differences were assessed. The exploratory results show that compared to the less secured households, the more secured ones have male and literate household heads, tend to have a greater number of...

Plant growth regulator losses in cotton as affected by adjuvants and rain Ciência Rural
Echer,Fábio Rafael; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
Most of Brazilian cotton is produced in regions where annual rainfall exceeds 1,500mm, hence plant growth regulators (PGR) may be washed from the leaves before being absorbed. The objective of this research was to evaluate mepiquat chloride and chlormequat chloride washing from cotton leaves by rains occurring at different moments post spraying. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. Both PGR were sprayed to cotton at pin-head square at 15g ha-1 a.i. with and without a silicon-based adjuvant, and simulated rains were applied at 0, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0 and 24 hours after spraying, plus a control without rainfall. Addition of silicon adjuvant increased PGR uptake. Rainfall occurring up to 24 hours after spraying resulted in some PGR loss from...

ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF VARIABLE RATE APPLICATION OF NITROGEN TO CORN FIELDS: ROLE OF VARIABILITY AND WEATHER AgEcon
English, Burton C.; Mahajanashetti, S.B.; Roberts, Roland K..
The use of meta-response functions based on EPIC-generated data resulted in comparisons between variable (VRAT) and uniform rate application technologies for 36 simulated fields. VRAT was more profitable and less nitrogen was lost to the environment in most cases. When spatial variability was small, uniform rate application techniques were adopted. However, when nitrogen use is restricted, VRAT is used on all simulated fields.

Climatic risk for potato late blight in the Andes region of Venezuela Scientia Agricola
Garcia,Beatriz Ibet Lozada; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Tapia,Luciano Roberto; Sparovek,Gerd.
Potato is an important crop for Venezuelan agriculture. However, its production is highly affected by late blight (Phytophtora infestans), since weather is commonly favorable for this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the sowing dates of low climatic risk for potato late blight in the Andes region of Venezuela, with an agrometeorological disease model and geographical information system (GIS) tools. The disease model used in this study was developed by Hyre (1954) which requires daily rainfall and temperature data which were obtained from 106 weather stations, located at the States of Mérida, Táchira, and Trujillo, for a period of 31 years. Hyre's model was applied for all stations obtainig the following variables: number of disease favorable...

Is geographic diversification sufficient to limit contract grower risk? AgEcon
Geyser, Mariette; Louw, Andre; Botha, L..
Lending and financial institutions have looked for a variety of ways to expand their portfolios into agriculture, but because of the risks associated with lending to farmers who lack traditional forms of collateral, they face price and yield risks, causing these inroads to be limited. Market-based instruments are readily available for price risk. Organised exchanges offering the most basic of these instruments, futures and options, have operated for a long time, providing transparency to the market and low-cost risk transfer tools for those able to access them. While the use of price risk management instruments is an incomplete solution, it has sufficient merits on its own and will make the overall burden of risk more bearable. The use of these instruments...
