Attitudes towards organic foods among consumers from the Mediterranean Arabic countries living in Italy. Organic Eprints
Ahmed, Abdel Munem.
This study investigates food habits in general and attitudes towards organic food products of consumers from the Mediterranean Arabic Countries (MACs) living in Italy. Organic food markets are still emerging in the consumers’ countries of origin. The questionnaire-based interview was administered to 211 consumers during Spring 2005. The results show that knowledge about organics is weak. Level of education has a strong influence on knowledge of organic food products. Workshops, universities and schools are the most effective sources for the real knowledge about organic agriculture. Consumption of organic foods slightly increased after immigration in Italy. Health and environmental concern are the main reasons to buy organics. High price and low...

Ökolandbau in Nordostdeutschland Organic Eprints
Bachinger, Johann.

Self identified research needs of New York organic farmers Organic Eprints
Baker, Brian P.; Smith, Douglas B..
A survey of organic farmers in New York State identified problems in need of university research. Weed management was the most frequently mentioned problem by far, identified as significant by two-thirds of the organic farmers. Only a few other problems were listed as significant, including insufficient time for farm work, lack of markets, low prices, and lack of appropriate tools. These were cited by more than a third of the farmers. Drought, insect management, and a lack of a dependable supply of labor were cited by about one-third of the respondents. The survey also examined organic farmers' information sources. They do not use conventional sources of agricultural information, such as the extension service and conventional agricultural media, as much as...

Strategi for økt matproduksjon i Rauma kommune Organic Eprints
Bergslid, Ildri (Rose) Kristine.

More inter- and transdisciplinary research needed in agroecology Organic Eprints
Biber-Freudenberger, Lisa; Denich, Manfred; Whitney, Cory W..
Agroecology embraces a collection of different disciplinary fields, ranging from agriculture and ecology to political theory. A stronger recognition of agroecology in agricultural research, which often has a strong production focus, could help to achieve sustainable development if more holistic and transdisciplinary research approaches are adopted.

How to construct a robust measure of social capital: Two contributions Organic Eprints
Bjørnskov, C.; Svendsen, G.T..
How to construct a robust measure of social capital? This paper offers two contributions. The first is an attempt to establish a broad social capital measure based on four indicators, the Freedom House Index, an index of perceived corruption from Transparency International, and scores on civic participation and generalized trust. This measure is then applied by comparing the level of social capital in 25 countries from Western and Eastern Europe. Our nine-cluster analysis shows that Switzerland has the highest score, followed by the Netherlands and Scandinavia. At the other end of the continuum we find post-communist countries and southern Italy. The findings for this specific sample suggest that institutions matter for social capital and the relationship...

Warum kaufen Verbraucher Bioprodukte (nicht)? Organic Eprints
Bruhn, Maike.

Empirical research of attitudes towards organic food among Croatian consumers Organic Eprints
Brčić-Stipčević, Vesna; Petljak, Kristina; Guszak, Irena.
Organic agriculture is a holistic production system, which sustains the natural soil activity, ecosystem and people. This new system is an answer by organic producers to unsustainability of capital intensive agriculture, characterized by mass production, specialization, product standardization and high labour productivity that results in a weaker relation of agriculture to natural conditions and many negative consequences, especially in ecological, social and economic spheres. Development of organic production enabled development of the organic food market. Another incentive for organic food market development is consumers’ increased interest in nutrition, health and environment protection. The first segment of this paper will present an overview of...

Entrepreneurial Culture And Capability of Organic Farmers’ Organizations in the Philippines Organic Eprints
Buena, Maria Rowena; Whitney, Cory W..
The entrepreneurial culture of farmers’ organizations of Magsasaka at Siyentipiko Para sa Pag- unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) in the Philippines is a contribution to Organic 3.0. The mechanisms necessary to reinforce an entrepreneurial culture for the Organic farmers’ organizations of MASIPAG are described. Different PGS groups have similar entrepreneurial capabilities yet dissimilar competitive success and organizational cultural dimensions. Much work is needed to develop the entrepreneurial capabilities, we recommend that farmers actively participate in marketing activities within their localities, improve production, and take advantage of expanding markets; farmers’ organizations leaders should encourage members to increase production and entice...

Shared protocols and data template in agronomic trials Organic Eprints
Cammarano, Davide; Martre, Pierre; Drexler, Dora; Draye, Xavier; Sessitsch, Angela; Pecchioni, Nicola; Cooper, Julia; Willer, Helga; Voicu, Adriana; Hinsinger, Philippe.
Due to the overlap of many disciplines and the availability of novel technologies, modern agriculture has become a wide, interdisciplinary endeavor, especially in Precision Agriculture. The adoption of a standard format for reporting field experiments can help researchers to focus on the data rather than on re-formatting and understanding the structure of the data. This paper describes how a European consortium plans to: i) create a “handbook” of protocols for reporting definitions, methodologies and parameters measured/calculated; and ii) how a data-template for field data was created and will be linked to the “handbook”. The overall goal of the EU-funded project Solutions for Solutions for improving Agroecosystem and Crop Efficiency for water and...

As conservation agriculture and organic farming are currently considered as environmentally friendly options for producing food, this study explores the motivations and problems of organic European farmers that apply at least two of the following techniques: (i) no-tillage, (ii) reduced tillage and/or (iii) green manures conservation practices. We carried out a survey about motivations and problems of 159 farmers located in 10 European countries with a questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Data were analysis with a principal component analysis followed by clustering to identify groups of farmers that share the same type of motivations and problems. The most important motivations are related to soil preservation concerns and problems are mainly linked...

ORGANIC IN THE LOCAL VS GLOBAL ANTINOMY Organic Eprints
Colombo, Luca; Grando, Stefano; Brunori, Gianluca.
Increasing attention is paid by European citizens to food chain characteristics, power relations and impacts. Distance travelled by food, its genuinity and capacity to convey cultural and landscape identity, fairness in the value chain and information robustness on quality specifications tend to assume a growing relevance in both public perception and business organisation. A triennial multidisciplinary and multicriteria study, funded under the EU 7th Framework Research Programme, aims to assess the performance of local and global food chains against economic, environmental, social, health and ethical dimensions. This paper examines how organic foods and method of production fits into the local/global discourse, as the subject emerges from an Italian...

Nitrate leaching and N2-fixation in grasslands of different composition, age and management Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Vinther, F.P..
Introduction Cut grassland systems usually have high N efficiency and consequently low nitrate leaching, whereas the introduction of grazing animals increases the loss potential dramatically (Jarvis, 2000). It has been demonstrated that nitrate leaching from unfertilised grass-clover swards is lower than from mineral-N fertilised swards grazed by cattle. The possible explanation for this is that the N2 fixation by pasture legumes is regulated by a natural feedback mechanism driven by soil inorganic N levels. The feedback mechanism acts as a limit to N inputs from legumes and consequently regulates the potential for N losses (Ledgard, 2001). In this paper we report 5 years (1997-2002) of nitrate leaching from four cropping sequences with different...
