The atmosphere sees the ocean, with sometimes huge waves, as a much smoother surface, compared to its passage over land where it is slowed down much more, even if obstacles are small compared to the size of ocean waves. A good observer notices right away that waves travel with the wind and consequently do not give much resistance. The details of how much resistance there actually is and its variation with wind speed and parameters defining the wave conditions has been a hot topic for the last 35 years. The correctness of the roughness formulation is a crucial question in the understanding of the air-sea interface. It has major implications in wave modelling, in storm surge modelling and also in modelling of the atmospheric boundary layer above the ocean.... |

In many instances, variation in phenotypic traits has been correlated with electrophoretic heterozygosity of plants, vertebrates and invertebrates. Enhanced growth of selected heterozygous molluscs has been attributed to lower energetic requirements for basal metabolism. I investigated the correlation between single- and multiple-locus heterozygosity and phenotype of the juvenile scallop Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin). Two questions were being asked: do heterozygous scallops grow faster and which metabolic processes are affected by the degree of heterozygosity? No significant correlation was observed between genotype (scored at 6 polymorphic loci) and growth in six different samples of juvenile scallops, all belonging to the same time... |

Among the many techniques available at the Micro and Trace Analysis Center (MiTAC) for the observation and analysis of individual particles, electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA) in combination with multivariate classification techniques allows the most advanced characterization of individual particles in a fast and efficient way. All facilities of EPXMA were used for the source apportionment of more than 25,000 individual aerosol particles detected above the North Sea, the English Channel and the Celtic Sea. The North Sea aerosol is predominantly composed of sea salt, sulfur-rich particles, silicates and calcium sulfate particles. Their abundance is dependent on meteorological conditions and sample location. Differences were studied on the basis of... |

This study forms part of a global research project, which aims to evaluate the effect of the Delta works on the ecosystem of the Dutch Delta. The Dutch Delta is the sublittoral region along the coast of the south of the Netherlands, from the Belgium border in the south to the Hoek van Holland in the north. Off shore, the area is arbitrary limited by the 10m depth line. From north to south, the Nieuwe Waterweg, the Haringvliet, Lake Grevelingen, the Eastern Scheldt and the Western Scheldt debouch into this part of the Southern Bight of the North Sea. As a result of the tidal currents and the thereon coupled transport of the sediments, a heterogenous pattern of banks and channels has evolved. The hydrodynamic regime and the bottom morphology have changed... |

The present PhD dissertation is composed of fourteen papers, preceded by a general introduction and followed by an epilogue that explains the entire research framework, including the links between the different case-studies, the local and global applicability of the results and the relevance of the work in the framework of development co-operation. The bulk of the research was carried out in four sites in Kenya and Sri Lanka: Gazi Bay and Mida Creek in Kenya, and Unawatuna-Galle and Pambala-Chilaw in Sri Lanka. After a revision of the often controversial issue of the floral composition of mangroves in Sri Lanka (SW coast), followed by a synthesis of image attributes in the interpretation of aerial photographs in Kenya and Sri Lanka, a series of... |

The present work aims at establishing a mathematical model which describes the seasonal evolution of the most characteristic constituents of the pelagic phase of the ecosystem in the southern bight of the North Sea. After the notions of system and model, as applied to the analysis of the marine environment, have been defined, the different analytical forms that are required to describe the various ecological interactions are explained and the principal ecological models which were published in the litterature are reviewed. They are divided into five distinct categories. The experimental data which have enabled the establishment of the mean yearly cycles of nitrogen through the different compartments of this particular ecosystem are then examined. These... |

During the years 1968-1970 a study has been made of the soft-bottom macrofauna (Coelenterata, Mollusca, Echiuroidea, Polychaeta, Archiannelida, Crustacea Malacostraca) of the estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt in the southwestern part of The Netherlands and of the adjacent part of the North Sea. 1751 samples were taken with 0.1 and 0.2 m² Van Veen grabs; in the intertidal zone several hundreds of samples were dug out, whereas further samples were taken for the analysis of interstitial polychaetes and archiannelids. Of the environmental factors especially salinity, sediment composition, current velocity, water temperature, oxygen saturation, turbidity, water pollution, exposure to waves, and the influence of ice have been investigated.... |

The objectives of the investigations comprise three parts: a) an accurate determination of the abundance and biomass of the post-larval Crangon crangon (L.) population in the Belgian coastal waters ; b) a quantitative analysis on a yearly basis of the consumption and production by this population, including a detailed description of the yearly fishery- and predation mortality; c) the formulation of a quantitative consumption-production-model which describes the trophic relationships of the population of postlarval Crangon crangon (L.). Method: The inventory of the biotic and abiotic factors, which influence the abundance and biomass of the population of post larval Crangon crangon (L.), leads to a... |
