Availability of data for the Black Sea climate change research IBSS Repository
Vladymyrov, V..
This review presents a brief analysis and sources (including URLs for the Internet sources) of the most interesting and informative Black Sea oceanographic data sets (excluding satellite data) that are now available for the scientific community with the main attention on the long term data sets. The results of the analysis show that a number of the available Black Sea datasets is growing permanently. However, this process is still rather slow and insufficient. One can hope that new international projects that cover the Black Sea region will drastically improve the situation in nearest years. The attempts should be made as well to create the united reliable quality checked data time series especially for biological data for which long time series do not...

Black Sea Mnemiopsis Leidyi database and plankton check list: online tools developed within the black sea scene project IBSS Repository
Slipetskyy, D.; Sergeyeva, O.; Gorbunov, V.; Vladymyrov, V.; Tezcan, D.; Myroshnychenko, V.; Gucu, A..
Several specific data and information management tools were developed within the EC Black Sea SCENE project for the Black Sea region. They are: (1) Black Sea Mnemiopsis database, (2) Black Sea Phytoplankton checklist, and (3) Black Sea Zooplankton checklist. The tools work on the Web and have simple user friendly interfaces. They will help to the Black Sea scientists to make their work with biological data more effective and productive. The tools are now being tested by the project participants and populated with the corresponding data and information.

Climate impact on long-term changeability of the black sea bioluminescence field and plankton community characteristics. IBSS Repository
Tokarev, Yu.; Mel'nikov, V.; Burmistrova, N.; Belokopytov, V.; Temnykh, A..
Researches in the bioluminescence field vertical structure, amplitude characteristics and spatial distribution in the Black Sea have been conducted in IBSS, NAS of Ukraine, from up to the present time. Enough evidencies are available to testify dramatic changes in different Black sea ecosystem components including bioluminescence field parameters, which took place last decades. But still there is no direct answer to the question about the reasons for such transformations, as variability of the Black Sea biophysical (bioluminescence) and biological characteristics at the climatic time scales, i.e. at the scale of decade periods are not sufficiently studied now. The most pronounced changes in vertical structure of the bioluminescence field are observed in...

Recent trends in research on Lake Victoria fisheries. Proceedings of the Second EEC Regional Seminar on Recent Trends of Research on Lake Victoria Fisheries, organized and hosted by Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), 25-27 September 1991, Kisumu, Kenya OceanDocs
Okemwa, E.; Wakwabi, E.; Getabu, A..
Topics on Lake Victoria limnology, benthic fauna, stock assessment, catch assessment survey, gear selectivity, fisheries ecology, fish parasites and marketing economics are covered. Management and conservation of the lake's fisheries and other aquatic resources are discussed. Dialogue between fishermen, scientists and administrators is stressed, measures to be undertaken are addressed and further research is recommended.

The life history and survival of Neochetina in Lake Victoria basin: Basis for biological weed control OceanDocs
Ochiel, G.R.S.; Njoka, S.W.; Manyala, J.O.; Okeyo Owuor, J.B..
Using our own experimental data and published data, we review information on the control process of water hyacinth and its status in Lake Victoria basin, Kenya. Experimental results show that the mean fecundity of the two weevils is 290 and 237 eggs per female laid over a period of 16 weeks, with an adult longevity of 98 and 112 days for Neochetina bruchi and N. eichhorniae respectively. There was significant difference between the egg laying capacities of the two weevil species (p=0.002). The survival rate of the two species was significantly different (p<0.05) for all life stages except for larvae to pupa. There was no significant interaction between the species and the method of experimental egg setting (p<0.05). The fecundity of both N. bruchi...

Estimation of the catch-at-age matrix of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) fisheries in the Western Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Nishida, T..
This is a preliminary paper. There are many different types of gears in many different countries in the western Indian Ocean. As it was sometimes difficult to contact persons-in-charge of the fisheries statistics, not all the description of this paper (such as gear categories, classification and etc) could be checked by them.

Initial results of the benthic fauna studies in the northern Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Mbahinzireki, G.B..
The paper presents initial results of relative abundance, composition and distribution of benthic organisms in an ecologically and environmentally changing northern Lake Victoria. The results suggest that the density of most of the zoobenthos has gone up since the pre-perch era despite the absence of comparative data. Increases in densities were noted for dipteran larvae followed by Caridina nilotica, ostracods, oligochaetes, molluscs and nymphs of Anisoptera and Ephemeroptera, in that order. Possible reasons to account for the increase are advanced. Inshore stations held higher densities than the offshore station. Type of the sediment and physico-chemical factors seem to influence the production and distribution of...

Case Study Of Small Pelagic Fish Resources In Northwest Africa OceanDocs
Samb, B..
The marine waters off Northwest Africa are very productive because of the active upwelling that takes place at different intensities along the coast and which supports important fish resources (among which the small pelagics are the most abundant). The fishery sector plays an important role in the economies of the different countries of the region. Despite their relatively low commercial value, the pelagic fish are dominating the catches and is important to both the industrial and artisanal sectors. Several assessment studies of these resources have been carried out,and the management recommendations given calls for a control of effort in the mackerel and horsemackerel fisheries, whereas a catch level not to be exceeded has been defined for sardinella. The...
