Reducing Global Warming and Adapting to Climate Change: The Potential of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Muller, Adrian; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Davis, Joan; Dytrtova, Karolina; Gattinger, Andreas; Lampkin, Nicolas; Niggli, Urs.
Climate change mitigation is urgent and adaptation to climate change is crucial, particularly in agriculture, where food security is at stake. Agriculture, currently responsible for 20-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions counting direct and indirect agricultural emissions), can however contribute to both climate change mitigation and adaptation. The main mitigation potential lies in the capacity of agricultural soils to sequester CO2 through building organic matter. This potential can be realized by employing sustainable agricultural practices, such as those commonly found within organic farming systems. Examples of these practices are the use of organic fertilizers and crop rotations including legumes leys and cover crops. Mitigation is also achieved...

Projektet...

Green Breeding: Bioimpuls Programme 2009-2013 - Perspectives on Phytophthora-resistant potato varieties Organic Eprints
Scholten, Olga E.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T..
The heavy outbreaks of Phytophthora in 2007, and again in 2012, reconfirmed the need for resistant potato varieties for the organic sector. Until recently no such varieties were available. In 2009 the Bioimpulsprogramme was launched to give more priority to breeding organic, Phytophthora-resistant varieties. In this 10-year programme, wild potato species are crossed with cultivated potato to develop new resistant varieties. Although this classical breeding strategy is a long road, the advantage is that you can select for multiple traits along the way. This brochure presents the results of the first four years of the programme.

Is Orbeseal® the answer to mastitis in organic farms? Organic Eprints
Notz, Christophe.
In addition to fertility problems mastitis also is a main animal health problem in organic dairy farms. A lot of therapeutics, mostly conventional, are used for this indication. The losses due to lower milk production, cure costs and replacement costs are enormous. Furthermore the regulations for organic farming rather favour complementary therapies than the use of antibiotics or other chemical-synthetic drugs. Consequently the non-antibiotic teat-sealer labelled as Orbeseal® could be a solution to improve the udder health in organic farming.

Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun.
I norsk landbruksjord finnes 5-7 ulike arter meitemark.

The effect of direct and indirect information on the consumption of organic fruits and vegetables Organic Eprints
Smed, Sinne; Andersen, Laura Mørch.
Based on a unique panel dataset covering consumption of organically and conventionally produced fruits and vegetables in the years 2005 - 2007, we examine whether positive information that link health and consumption of organic fruits and vegetables and negative information about pesticides in conventional fruits and vegetables can change demand for organic foods to such an extent, that it can be used in marketing strategies of organic fruit and vegetables to different types of consumers. Using the double hurdle model we estimate price elasticities and partial effects of these two types of information for six organic segments of Danish households, where three are positively minded towards organic foods and three are either indifferent or negative....

Organic Eprints
Devide, Antonio Carlos Pries.

Organic farms as refuges for small mammal biodiversity in agro ecosystems Organic Eprints
Jensen, Thomas Secher; Hansen, Tine Sussi; Olsen, Kent.
Habitat fragmentation, the process by which relatively continuous habitats is broken into smaller pieces, occurs in natural systems but is to a high degree also human-induced through landscape use. Fragmentation of the landscape produces a series of habitat patches surrounded by a matrix of different habitats and land use regimes. The major landscape consequences of fragmentation are loss of habitat, reduction in habitat patch size, and increasing isolation of habitat patches. In general, population performance declines in response to habitat loss but size of remaining area and isolation effects is known also to influence the population trend. Small mammals are well suited for examination of population responses to habitat fragmentation as they have...
