Co-managing the commons within the new governance structures of South Africa has the potential to promote participatory democracy and improve natural resource management. Inequitable access to and use of natural resources characterised apartheid-era policies and practices. In line with post-1990 democratisation processes, public involvement, participation, community-based initiatives and co-management have been promoted as key aspects of natural resource management policies. Power sharing, empowerment, organisational capacity building and improved natural resource management are some of the key principles of co-management within the South African context. This paper will explore the applicability of the co-management concept to the enhancement of rural... |

In Ghana, fishing is the most important direct and indirect employment generating activity in the entire coastal zone of length of about 528 km. It has been estimated that the fishery sub-sector supports about 1.5million people, and fish and fish products contributed 21% (US $56 million) to the nations non-traditional export earnings in 1997(FAO, 1998). With the persistent decline in the price of cocoa and gold which are Ghana’s traditional export commodities and the resultant adverse effect on foreign exchange earnings, government policy aims at increasing the production of non traditional export commodities, including fish, to meet the growing domestic demand and export..... |

IFOP, as non profit marine research institute has the mission to provide to the Under Secretariat of Fisheries in Chile, the technical information and scientific basis for the regulation of Chilean Fisheries. For this purpose it has 150 Scientific Observers distributed throughout the Chilean coast. With the intention to improve the process of data production, a group of scientists has developed a new computer science system for data collection, data management, and automatic publication of fishing and biological indicators in Web Page. The system allow to collect data of: fishing trips; captures and species composition; length distribution and biological variables. For this is being carried out the following process. Collection of data in Pocket PC with... |

The Integrated Coastal Area Management of IOC was established in 1997 with the purpose to (i) assist IOC Member States in their efforts to build marine scientific and technological capabilities in the field of ICAM. Within the existing Medium Term Strategy (2008-2013), the ICAM programme’s priority area are :1) Adaptation to climate change in the coastal zones (in particular through the ACCC Project); 2) Development of marine spatial planning methodologies and their application; 3) Development and testing of guidelines for the mitigation of coastal hazards through ICAM; 4) Development and application of performance indicators for coastal management plans and programmes. Collaboration with IODE has been active mostly at the project level in the context of... |

The International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY 2007-2008) is one of the largest, if not the largest, international scientific programmes the world has ever seen. Over 50,000 scientists, technicians, crew members and other participants from 60 nations around the globe will participate in a period of intense scientific activities in both polar regions. |

Mozambique initiated a Coral Reef Management Programme (MCRMP) in 1998, with the core aim to ensure the long-term sustainable utilization of the coral reef resources of Mozambique. Within the programmed activities, the monitoring of coral reefs is one of the most important. Thus, a long-term monitoring programme was launched in 1999 with most of the monitoring stations being visited in November 1999. Several reefs along the coast were surveyed, using standardized methodology. The preliminary results of this study showed already that protected or inaccessible reefs were in better conditions than those freely exploited, and highlighted the need for management measures and establishment of marine protected areas. The present paper reviews the preliminary... |

The analysis of current state of zoobenthos at the Crimean shores of the Black Sea is fulfilled. The general features of taxonomical structure, regional peculiarities of bottom fauna development and species number distribution pattern with depth are considered. The results obtained testify the absence of species number reduction at the Crimean coastal zone of the Black Sea over the 2nd half of the 20th century. Total number of the macrozoobenthos species registered in the Crimea water area exceeds 560. Filter-feeding mollusks (Chamelea gallina and Modiolula phaseolina first of all) became the most pronounced “evolutioning” species, determining the quantitative changes of the bottom fauna over the soft-bottoms of the southwestern Crimea during the period... |

Ghana with population of 18.4 million (2000), is located on Latitude 4,44’N 11,11’N and longitude 3,11’W, 1,11’E. The country has a total land area of 23,853,900 HA and agricultural land area of 13,628,179 HA. The agricultural sector is the dominant sector in the Ghanaian economy. The total area under cultivation and irrigation are 5,808,600HA and 11,000 HA respectively. Agriculture is predominantly on a small holder basis although there are few large farms and plantations particular for oil palm, coconut, rubber and to a lesser extent rice, maize, and pineapple. Main crops cultivated are the cereals; maize, rice, millet, sorghum and the starchy crops of cassava, yam, cocoyam and plantain. SeaDataNet is an EU funded project (2006 – 2011) to develop and provide a Pan-European infrastructure for marine & ocean data management. The project builds upon earlier data management infrastructure projects, undertaken over a period of 20 years by an expanding network of oceanographic data centres from the countries around all European seas. Its predecessor project Sea-Search had a strict focus on metadata. SeaDataNet maintains significant interest in the further development of the metadata infrastructure, but its primary objective is the provision of easy access to data and generic data products. SeaDataNet is a distributed infrastructure connecting 40 data centres from 35 countries around the Black Sea, Mediterranean, North East Atlantic, North... |

People of the Kenya coast have lived off the Indian Ocean for as long as memory can go. Folklore and legend reflect a history of dependence on the sea for livelihood, including fisheries. Due to technological limitation coupled with small human populations, harvesting from the sea had little effect in the past. Fishermen relied on simple fishing gear operated either from the shore or from dug-out and small planked canoes to supply needs of their families.... |
