EC Project: System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities (SIMORC). OceanDocs
Vladymyrov, Vladimir.
Metocean in situ data are an important category of oceanographic and marine data, comprising observed parameters like sea level, waves, currents, sea temperature, conductivity, air temperature, air pressure, and wind. A very substantial volume of metocean in situ data is collected by or under contract to major oil & gas companies. This is done all over the world and over many years a large volume of data sets has been acquired, often at substantial cost. These data are currently managed by the metocean departments of the oil & gas companies and stored in various formats. They are exchanged on a limited scale between the oil & gas companies. Despite various industry co-operative joint projects, there is not yet a common awareness of available...

Ecosystem Considerations for Managing Marine Fisheries in the Indian Ocean OceanDocs
Vivekanandan, E..
Fisheries management approach of several countries, including those in the Indian Ocean region, has been generally on a species-to-species basis. It has been realized now that this approach has severe limitations, especially for the tropical, multispecies fisheries. While the understanding that fish and other living aquatic living resources are integral part of their ecosystems is not new, this idea has not been put into practice in managing stocks, especially for the marine fish. Reshaping the management strategies by involving all the stakeholders in such an ecosystem approach is expected to yield short-term and long-term benefits

Ecosystem structure and dynamics of the marine system of Sierra Leone for three time periods: 1964, 1978 and 1990 OceanDocs
Heymans, S.J.; Vakily, J.M..
We present the key feature of a quantitative food web model for the shelf and slope waters off Sierra Leone, constructed using the Ecopath with Ecosim software. Three periods are represented: 1964, based on data from the Guinean Trawling Survey, complemented with field data on lower trophic levels gathered in the late 1950/early 1960s and published by A.R. Longhurst; 1978, for which fish abundance data from an ex-USSR survey exist, along with related, scattered fisheries information; and 1990, for which a fair amount of fisheries data exist, along with the results of a Spanish trawl survey. Demersal fish biomass appears to have declined linearly from 1964 to 1990, due to the massive increase of the catches of distant water fleets operating in Sierra Leone,...

Enforcement In Kenya’s Marine Protected Area Network OceanDocs
Muthiga, N..
The Kenyan coastline is approximately 500 km long, with a well developed fringing reef system except where major rivers (Tana and Athi Sabaki) discharge into the Indian Ocean (Hamilton and Brakel, 1984). Additionally patch reefs occur in Malindi and Kiunga in the north and Shimoni in the south on the Kenya Tanzania border (Fig. 1). Coral reefs are the predominant marine ecosystem in terms of ecology and economy but seagrass beds and mangrove forests also contribute to the economy of the coastal communities ( Muthiga ITMEMS). The coastal topography, climate and habitats of the Kenyan coast have been described in McClanahan 1988, McClanahan and Young 1986, Obura et al 2000). In order to conserve and manage these important ecosystems, the government of Kenya...

Environment And Sustainable Development; The Role Of The Engineer OceanDocs
Ganesan, C.T..
Today when the world stands on the threshold of a new era of ecological awareness and environmental activism it is important to have a clear understanding sustainable development. Different ways of explaining the term, "sustainable development" are discussed. In southern African regions problems of population growth and unbalanced distribution of population are continuously focussing problems to the planners. The impact of sustainability on environment is very well described. In most of urban areas in southern African countries the water is heavily polluted with domestic sewage, industrial effluents and solid wastes. A detailed study in this aspect is made. Rural-urban interface for sustainable development is described with particular relevance southern...

Arriaza Oliveros, L.; Simanca Cardenas, Y.; Rodas Fernández, L.; Milian, D..
The simulation operational tool known as SIMulación de COrrientes (SIMCO) is a part of a methodology to forecast marine currents into cuban shelf. This tool is based on a lineal model. Gulf of Batabanó is an almost closed shallow water body whit flat bottom, that includes a surface of 20 850 km2 and its average depth is about 6 m. This work offers the results of such a comparison between the results of the application of SIMCO to Gulf of Batabanó and current measurements. SIMCO is a good representation of the marine currents inside of the gulf, the overestimation mean error is equal to 3.8 cm/s for the south boundary of gulf when SIMCO run whit a kind of horizontal resolution of 2 nm and the overestimation errors decreases when the horizontal resolution...

Simanca, J.; Arriaza, L..
This work, it is applied a unidirectional and stationary model for estimating the dissolved oxygen distribution in the area of the Gulf of Batabanó, starting from the influence of physical-biological parameters (marine currents, temperature, salinity, photosynthesis and respiration). In this first approach, estimates of the dissolved oxygen concentration are obtained for Ensenada de la Broa, with an error of 0.2693 mg/L, while for the rest of the Gulf the estimate error oscillated between -4.13 y -4.69 mg/L. Consequently, it is concluded that the pattern is efficient for the estimate of dissolved oxygen concentration in Ensenada de La Broa, while for the rest of the Gulf it is not enough the consideration of primary production in the water column as only...

Estimating The Returns To Mangrove Conversion: Sustainable Management Or Short Term Gain? OceanDocs
Gammage, S..
The purpose of this project is to estimate the ‘total economic value’ of a mangrove ecosystem in part of the Gulf of Fonseca, El Salvador, and to develop a costbenefit framework to compare the sustainable management of the forest with alternative use scenarios. The current management strategy is compared to its sustainable counterpart, and to the partial conversion of the mangrove ecosystem to semi-intensive aquaculture and salt ponds. A variety of different valuation techniques are used to assess the contribution of different products and services of the mangrove ecosystem. Among these techniques, a ‘pseudo production function approach’ is used to calculate doseresponse estimates of the impact of mangrove loss on the productivity of marine and estuarine...

Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Maximum photosynthetic values were shown at 30 y 60 mg/l and almost cero at 150 mg/ l of Cu....

Martínez Canals, M.; Montalvo, J.F.; Miravet, M.E.; Lugioyo, M.; Loza, S.; Pérez, R..
The evaluation of the possible environmental changes due to the anthropic impacts that have happened in the last years in this scenario and the redefinition of areas that suffer affectations were carried up. Any environmental alteration of this ecosystem, either of natural or human origin, can have an important economic and social repercussion. According to the proposed chemical and biological indexes, the waters of the Gulf of Batabanó presented mesotrophic conditions with tendency to the eutrofization in four fundamental areas. In the silts of the Gulf the values of organic carbon and sulphidric acid were characteristic of sediments with high concentrations of organic matter. In the coastal sector N, was determinate high concentrations of sulphidric acid...

OceanDocs
Revilla Alcázar, I.; Prieto Trueba, D..
One of the practical utilities of the protozoa resides in their employment as biological indicators of the degree of environmental contamination. In this work a characterization of the protozoa community is made in the outlet of the river Almendares, which constitutes the most important fluvial current in the Cuban archipelago from the historical point of view, for they were selected it five stations that they were randomized monthly for a two year-old period (1996-1998). Of the 100 identified species 34 constitute new registrations for this segment of the river. The biggest specific richness corresponded to the ciliates, representing 67% of the total of species. The smallest specific richness corresponded to the estuary, where species are included...
