Founded 1971 on initiative of the Norwegian Oceanographic Committee, hosted by the Institute of Marine Research (Ministry of Fisheries), and sponsored by the University of Bergen (Ministry of Science and Education) and by the national research council. The initial name was the Norwegian Oceanographic Data Centre (NOD). Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, NOD worked mainly in the field of physical oceanography and research project information management. In the 1990s, NOD was closer incorporated in IMR and was renamed NMD. The Norwegian Marine Data Centre (NMD) operates within the framework of the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), in Bergen, Norway. The latter is the leading marine research institute in Norway with a long experience in various fields of... |

The National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) of Russian Federation is a subdivision of RIHMIWDC, functioning as one of the four centres of the Russian state system for acquisition, check, classification, storage and computer processing, and dissemination of marine data and information. Currently the Russian NODC consists of 3 laboratories with the following distribution of responsibility: data acquisition; data integration and databases support; data processing and analysis for science-practical aims. The total number of people on the staff of Russian NODC is 25 (including scientists, engineers and technicians). In addition to NODC several RIHMI-WDC divisions are involved in implementing the tasks of Russian NODC. |

The Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography (SADCO) is located in the CSIR in Stellenbosch, close to Cape Town, South Africa. It archives, extracts and manipulates multi disciplinary oceanographic data in a large area around the southern African subcontinent. The data centre makes use of the staff of the CSIR for all activities of the centre (management, data processing, database design and loading, IT and network support, and handling of requests). The data centre is small, and focuses on data within the physical oceanographic domain. It is fully computerised and networked. |

In 1971 Sweden established an IOC Designated National Agency located in the Swedish National Board of Fisheries, Hydrographic Department. A major reason for the establishment of the DNA was the increasing awareness of the eutrophication problems in the Baltic. In 1985 the Hydrographic Department (including the DNA) was relocated to SMHI and changed the name to Oceanographic Laboratory. SMHI is the largest producer of oceanographic data in Sweden. In 1994 the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency appointed the laboratory as “National Data Host for Physical and Chemical Oceanographic Data". In 1998 the laboratory was reorganized into Oceanographic Services and made responsible for all marine monitoring data produced in SMHI. |

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) belongs to the University of Dar Es Salaam. It was established in July, 1979 as a lead institute in all fields of marine sciences in Tanzania in terms of research, teaching and consultancy. In 1996, IMS was nominated by the Government of Tanzania as the Designated National Agency (DNA), and on December 17, 2002 the status of IMS was upgraded to full National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC). |

The NODC was established at the end of 1997. On September 17, 1997 the participating institutes signed an agreement in which the goals and details of the tasks, organisational structure and finances of the NODC were laid down. Since then the NODC has concentrated on building a formal framework for data and information exchange, resulting in a national oceanographic data policy (18 May 2000) and on the development of a series of national databases with information on oceanographic datasets, research-ship schedules and oceanographic research projects. All databases are freely available via the NODC website at www.nodc.nl. |
