Vers le Pôle ArchiMer
Nansen, Fridtjof.

A new species of the genus Ichthyurus Naturalis
Gestro, R..
At the request of Mr. Ritsema I give here the description of a new Ichthyurus from Eastern Java, belonging to the collections of the Leyden Museum. The species of Ichthyurus at present known as inhabiting the island of Java are very few in number, and I have to thank Mr. Ritsema for entrusting me with the study of a very remarkable form of this highly interesting genus of Malacodermidae.

Two new species of Lucanoid Coleoptera Naturalis
Ritsema Cz., C..
Strongly resembling and about of the same length and development as the described specimen of Aegus Leeuweni Rits. 1) but narrower and more parallel-sided. The new species is at once recognizable by the two gibbosities on the fore-head which, no doubt, will be more conspicuous in more highly developed specimens. Moreover in the new species the basal outer angle of the mandibles is prolonged backward thus embracing the lateral angles of the head, and the anterior angles of the prothorax are rounded, not obliquely truncated. Length (with mandibles) 24,5 mm. — Black; shining with the exception of the opaque upper side of the mandibles and the fore-head as far as the top of the gibbosities, and of the closely punctured base and sides of the elytra.

Fairmaire, L..
Long. 22 mill.

Apogonia tuberculiventris, n. sp. from North Borneo Naturalis
Ritsema Cz., C..
A species of moderate size (measuring 10—11 mm. in length) which is easily recognizable by the two approximate tubercles on the middle of the first ventral segment. Its colour passes from ferruginous brown (immature specimens) to pitchy black with purple and green tinges on the upper side; the palpi and antennae are ferruginous. The sides of the sterna are covered with very fine and short whitish setae.

On the identity of Stoparola concreta with Siphia cyanea Naturalis
Büttikofer, J..
When revising the genus Siphia and allied genera in the Leyden Museum, I fell upon the fact that our typical males and female of Stoparola concreta (Müller) from the Highlands of Padang (Sumatra) are in striking contrast with the other species of the genus Stoparola, which on the whole is characterized by the sea-green general color, the triangular, flat shape of the bill, the short tarsi and the uniformity in color between male and female. Their strong resemblance with Siphia Everetti, which I brought home from Borneo, led me to the comparison with the description of Siphia cyanea from the mountains of Tenasserim and Perak, a very rare bird which is not represented in the Leyden Museum. This comparison absolutely convinced me that our Sumatran birds are...

Fieldnote on Ichthyurus lateralis Westw Naturalis
Zehntner, L..
Enclosed I send you some specimens (males and females) of an Ichthyurus-species captured by me on December 27th of last year at Poespo, about 600 M. above the level of the sea, on the slope of the Tengger Mountain (Pasoeroean Residency). These handsome beetles were flying round a young fig-tree Urostigma spec.), and, on examining the tree more carefully, I found them on the under side of the leaves. I was not able to make out what they were doing there, but I saw them stumble between the hairs of the leaves with their mandibles as it were in search of small insects, which, however, I could not detect with the naked eye. Ichthyurus flies very well, and it is especially remarkable how easily they take flight and sit down again, a fact which is very...

The dog of the Tengger Naturalis
Jentink, F.A..
In the journal entitled “Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch Indië”, there has been published in 1896, T. 55, by Dr. Kohlbrugge a very interesting paper on the Mammals of the Tengger. This mountain is to be found in East Java, Residence Pasoeroean, to the north of the Semeroe or Semiroe, the highest mountain of Java. On the Tengger to the height of 7500 feet potatoes and vegetables, coffee and maize are growing. As Dr. Kohlbrugge’s paper has been published in the dutch language I translate here a part of it, dealing with a wild dog — at present after Dr. Kohlbrugge extinct —, described by him as a distinct variety under the title Canis familiaris var. tenggerana.

Orthragoriscus nasus Ranz. on the Dutch coast Naturalis
Reuvens, C.L..
19 November 1896 fishermen caught in the neighbourhood of Helder a large specimen of the moonfish, and brought it immediately to the Zoological station, where it arrived alive. The director, Dr. P. P. C. Hoek, addressed the fish to the Leyden Museum, and we received it next morning, 20 Nov., in the best, fresh condition. Examining the animal it proved to be Orthragoriscus nasus Ranz. It agrees entirely with the specimen from Callantsoog, described by Dr. van Lidth de Jeude in “Notes Leyd. Mus., Vol. XIV, p. 127, pl. 5” 1), though the dimensions are considerably greater.
