Most genera of Bryozoa are widely distributed, and there are many cosmopolitan species, so that the Bryozoa fauna from any one locality has some considerable similarity with all others, but in comparing the Arctic and Antarctic fauna to see to what extent, if any, the bipolar theory receives support, it is not enough to show, that there are some similar forms, for this we should certainly expect, but what we want to know is, whether there is more similarity between the Arctic and Antarctic than between the Arctic and subantarctic faunas ; then we can carry on our comparisons to Southern Temperate, proceeding to tropical regions and thence on to Northern Temperate.

I have compared this species with Haploglenius and Episperches but better I could compare it with the Australian genus Stilbopteryx Newm. which I had not seen before I made my description. The form of the head with the very short antennae, which are, like those of Stilbopteryx, shorter than the thorax, the round pterostigma, ferrugineous in Albardia, white in Stilbopteryx, and also the simple sinuated postcosta are characters of near relationship. According to Mc. Lachlan (J. Linn. Soc. XI, p. 229, 1871) the Stilbopteryx ♂ has a pelotte, and must therefore be placed in the Myrmeleontidae, in Albardia it is wanting and therefore this genus belongs to the Ascalaphidae. By the simple and sinuated postcosta the two genera are related to all American... |

Dressing up the Catalogue of the Neuropterous Insects in the collections of the Leyden Museum, I found in the collection of the late Mr. H. Albarda six specimens of a Theleproctophylla from Asia minor (Lycia, Makri). They were placed beyond a label bearing the name Bubo agrioides Rambur”, but as this name is not written by Mr. Albarda on the underside of the label of origin, I think these specimens were placed there only provisionally. I have in my own collection one specimen of the same species from Mardin, Mesopotamia, purchased from Dr. Staudinger under the name Theleproctophylla barbara L. Not being in the possession of the true barbara I had compared my specimen with the figure in Costa’s »Fauna Napoli”, but as most of the figures in this work are... |

Aru-Inseln, 1 ♂, von Rosenberg leg. (Leid. Mus.).

Paussus... |

Dr. M. Greshoff, Director of the Colonial Museum at Haarlem, entrusted to me the other day some exotic Bats for identification. Among them there was a specimen from the West-Indies, apparently belonging to a hitherto undescribed species, besides a specimen of the splendid Kerivoula picta from Sumatra, Deli; it is the first specimen of this species I ever saw from this locality. Like the above mentioned specimens this, too concerning the habitat, so interesting individual forms now part of our collections thanks to the kindness of Dr. Greshoff. |

Lidth de Jeude, Th.W. van. |
During the last years the interior of Surinam was explored by several little expeditions. Though topographic research was the maiu purpose of these expeditions, still biology profited by them, as in most cases the physician accompanying the expedition was charged with collecting. Dr. H. van Cappelle, who organized the first of these expeditions, explored the neighbourhood of the river Nickeri and its right tributary, the Fallawatra, in the last half of the year 1900, and penetrated as far as the mountains forming the watershed between Nickeri and Coppename. Being a geologist, he himself took care of the zoological department. |

Arranging the Neuropterous Insects in the collection of the Leyden Museum I found the type-specimen of the above mentioned species with the names »Raye” and »Calkoen” on the labels of origin. Asking Mr. Ritsema, he told me that, according to verbal communications of his predecessor, the late Dr. S. C. Snellen van Vollenhoven, Messrs. Raye van Breukelerwaard and Calkoen were collectors in the beginning of the 19th century, from whose collections Olivier has described several species. The labels are in Dr. Snellen van Vollenhoven’s handwriting. Ascalaphus maculatus Oliv. This is in the best condition of the three types, though the antennae and left hindwing are wanting. Its label bears the indication »Raye, Gallia meridionalis”. No doubt this is the same... |

This most remarkable genus probably belongs to the subfamily of Laelaptinae. Though the male is unknown to me, I do not hesitate to place it here, because the female, concerning the dorsal and ventral shields, seems to be nearest related to Hypoaspis myrmecophilus (Berlese) and Hypoaspis Canestrinii (Berlese) which are provided too with metapodial as well as with inguinal shields, a rare coincidence; and concerning its being covered dorsally with so numerous hairs, — to Hypoaspis arcualis (C. L. Koch). The reason why in my opinion the present mite belongs to a hitherto unknown genus, is, that the mandibles in the female sex lack the upper-jaw and have a fixed, not a movable, under-jaw. I think it is not senseful to enlarge at present the number of generic... |

Male. Length 1650, width 1140 μ.— Colour pale; dorsal shield straw-coloured. — Shape like that of Laelaps agilis C. L. Koch, broad-oval, top forward, with a slightly indicated shoulder above legs I and II. — Texture scaly in the shields; finely wrinkled in the weak skin. Dorsal side (fig. 1) protected by one shield, long 1530, wide 910 μ, so that a wide margin of weak skin surrounds the shield from the shoulder backwards, and posteriorly. Anteriorly the shield shows the same shoulders above legs I as the body, and less developed shoulders above legs II. The side-edges of the shield are slightly rounded, the posterior edge well rounded. Hairs. The hairs are bristles of two kinds; there are longer and finer ones on the shield, and very short (comparatively... |
