The authors discuss in the introduction the literature about the distribution and placemement of fertilizers in agricultural experiments in U.S.A. in such crops as cotton, corn, potato, beans and some vegetables. An experiment was carried out with corn in a randomized block with 7 treatments, and 4 repetitions. The plots were 11,2m wide by 10m long. The 7 treatments were the following: one broadcast, 3 applications of fertilizer in hills and 3 in rows. In the latter six treatments application in rows or hills was combined with applications in three different depths: below the seeds without mixing the soil, below the seeds but with mixing of the soil, and above the seeds without mixing the soil. The variation between treatments was significant, and the best... |

The authors carried out a series of pots and plots experiments applying arsenical and organic insecticides to cotton plants cultivated in "terra roxa" and in a sandy soil. The first results were presented in 1947, to the la. Reunião Brasileira de Ciência do Solo (First Brazilian Congress of Soil Science); they pointed out the danger resulting from the accumulation of arsenic in soils due to the constant applications of arsenicais to control cotton pests; in the course of the time, the amount of residual arsenic in the soil would determine a decrease in cotton yield caused by its toxic effect on the crop. The following conclusions were drawn from the last three experiments: 1) the field experiment conducted in a sandy soil to which lead arseniate was... |

Biology of Arsenura xanthopus (Walker, 1855) (Lep., Adelocephalidae), a pest of Luehea spp. (Tiliaceae), and notes on its natural enemies. In the beginning of 1950, one of the Authors made some observations about the biology of Arsenura xanthopus (Walker), in Piracicaba, State of S. Paulo, Brazil. From 1951 to 1953, both Authors continued the observations on such an important Adelocephalidae, the caterpillars of which represent a serious pest of Luehea spp. leaves. Actually, in some occasions, the caterpillars can destroy completely the leaves of the trees. The species is efficientely controlled by two natural enemies: an egg parasite (Tetrastichus sp., Hym., Eulophidae) and a fly attacking the last instar caterpillar (Winthemia tricolor (van der Wulp),... |

This paper deals with the variation of the ascorbic acid content in Natal orange as related to the type of rootstock and to the picking time. The determinations were carried out in the juice of fruits which had practically the same ratio total solids/acidity being selected only the highest values of such quotient. The results can be summaryzed as follows: 1. The rootstock has a significant influence on the vitamin C content of the scion; this influence shows two interesting aspects: first, the ascorbic acid contet itself varies as a function of the rootstock; among the three rootstocks studied the highest values were obtained on scion growing on Serra d'água orange; the lowest values were found in "limão rugoso" and "limão francês" was intermediate; the... |

This paper relates the results of an experiment designed to study the comparative effects of several phosphates applied to corn crops. The following phosphates were applied to a latin square of 6x6: Latif (a rock phosphate), fospal, superphosphate, fertifos, hiperfosfato and serranafosfato (a fusion phosphate). The nutrients were employd at the rates of 200 kg of N (as Chilean nitrate), 200kg of K2O (as muriate of potash) and 200 kg of P205. To correct the acidity and to improve the poor physical conditions of the sandy soil studied limestone (450 kg/Ha) and cotton seed meal (900 kg/Ha) were added to all plots; liming was made one month in advance to the planting. In the second year, in the same place, the split-plot technique was used: half plot received... |

In several cotton crops areas of the State of S. Paulo it was observed, during the years of 1948, 1949, and 1951, the appearance of a purple color of the leaves; the color appears in the opening of the bolls and was correlated with a decrease of production. The opinions concerning the cause of such abnormality were very different and sometimes contradictory; certain investigators attributed the disease to insect attack, others to bad climatic conditions whereas others to a potassium deficiency now called "fome de potássio" (potash hunger); our ideas on the subject is another one. We think that the disease is caused by lack of a suitable supply of magnesium. This opinion is largely based on the syntomatology found in the literature. To study the problem,... |

A generalized comprehensive scheme concerning the movement of materials into living cells and tissues is presented. It is designed for use by investigators and teachers who, is assumed, have a previous knowledge of the subject as well as familiarity with previously published literature on the subject. Footnotes to figure 2 X = a constituent component material, arising from extermal sources or through metabolism, capable of migration under favorable conditions. e, i, ec, ic, mc = subscripts indicating location. oC = oxidized cytoplasmic constituents specifically concerned in unidirectional (here invardly directed), diffetial translocation of a particular material X. rC = reduced cytoplasmic constituents specifically concerned. XF = specific free energy (2)... |

In this paper it is studied the action of vinasse as compared to mineral fertilizers. Beans, corn, cotton and sesame were cultivated in randomized blocks receiving the following treatments: A = mineral fertilizers (N, P, K); V = vinasse at the rate of 1,000,000 liters per Ha; AV = mineral fertilizers + vinasse; T = control. Statistical analysis of the experiments has consistently revealed the superiority of vinasse either combined or not with the mineral fertilizers over the remaining treatments. There was no significant difference between V and AV which shows the surprizing role of vinasse when applied to light soils such as those employed in the present experiments. By employing 1,000,000 liters of vinasse to the hectare the following amounts of... |

Studying the meiosis of two Hemiptera, mamely, Lybindus dichrous (Coreidae) and Euryophthalmus humilis (Pyrrhocoridae), the author has found new proofs in favor of the existence of a centromere at each end of the chromosomes of the insects belonging to that order. Following the behaviour of a pair of large autosomes of Lybindus, he was able to verify that in the first division of the spermatocytes, the tetrad they form divides transversely by the middle, giving rise to two V-shaped anaphase chromosomes that go to the poles with the vertex pointing forwardly. From the end of the first division till the metaphase of the second one, the centromeres occupying the vertex of the V go apart from one another, making the chiasmata existing there slip to the... |

This paper deals with the preliminary results of a sand culture experiment carried out to obtain physiological bases to study the fertilization of cassava in the State of São Paulo. On the other hand, the authors are interested in the possible influence of mineral nutrients in the quantity and quality of starch. Cassava (Manihot utilissima Pohl.), "Branca de Sta. Catarina" variety, was grown under the following treatments: NO PO KO, NO P1 K1, N1 P0 Kl, NI P1K0, N2 p1 Kl N1 P2 K1 and N1 P1 K2. A striking response to phosphorus was observed among the treatments. However, once secured the necessary phosphoric level to the plant, the production becomes limited by nitrogen; in other words, increase in yield can be accomplished only by raising the nitrogenous... |
