2011 Approaches for organic food and feed authentication Organic Eprints
van Ruth, S.M.; Alewijn, M.; Tres, A.; van der Veer, G..
People’s growing awareness of health, environment and animal welfare has led to an increased public interest in the quality of foods and food production systems. This in turn boosted organic production. Due to higher production costs, organic produce tends to retail at a higher price than their conventional counterparts. As a consequence of the premium price, organic produce is susceptible to fraud. Fair competition between producers and sustained consumer confidence favour organic production, and it requires regular confirmatory assessments of the identity of organic produce in addition to administrative controls. Traditional analytical strategies for guaranteeing quality and uncovering adulteration have relied on the determination of the amount of a...

2011 German Escherichia coli O104:H4 outbreak: Alignment-free whole-genome phylogeny by feature frequency profiles Nature Precedings
Man Kit Cheung; Lei Li; Wenyan Nong; Hoi Shan Kwan.
Accuracy of SNP-based whole-genome phylogeny reconstruction relies heavily on quality of sequence alignment which is particularly hindered by poorly assembled genomes. Alignment-free methods might provide additional insights. Here, we constructed a whole-genome phylogeny of 10 isolates from the current German E. coli outbreak against 30 existing E. coli genomes as well as that of a historical EHEC isolate using the alignment-free feature frequency profile method. Our results revealed a high similarity among E. coli isolates from the current outbreak and the historical EHEC being the most closely related isolate sequenced thus far.

2011 German Escherichia coli outbreak: Alignment-free whole-genome phylogeny by feature frequency profiles Nature Precedings
Here, we constructed a whole-genome phylogeny of 9 E.coli isolates from the 2011 German outbreak against existing E. coli genomes using the alignment-free feature frequency profile method. In addition, we looked for gene elements that distinguish the outbreak group from the other E. coli strains and possibly accounted for the emergence of the outbreak isolates using the distinguishing feature analysis.

2011 Michigan Land Values and Leasing Rates AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
Land is a natural resource that is valued for many reasons. Farmers utilize land to earn their livelihood and as a store of wealth for future retirement. Potential rural residents have increasingly sought open space for a home site and pursuit of a lifestyle. Developers seek financial opportunities to invest in and develop it for non-farm uses. Recreational needs such as hunting are often met through use of land. For some, land is viewed as an investment and a hedge against inflation. This myriad of demands for land combined with its fixed supply continually alters its market price, which is a monetary measure of its perceived value.

2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Corn and Soybean Industries, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the United States and world corn and soybean markets for the 2010-2020 period using the Global Corn and Soybean Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Corn-based ethanol production has influenced United States corn industry. As long as the production of corn-based ethanol remains strong, corn prices will likely remain at a level higher than the long term average. However, changes in the U.S. Federal government subsidies or mandates could significantly impact the world corn market. Under the current assumptions in the model, corn price is expected to remain in a range between $4.68 and $5.35 per...

2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2010-2020 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years. Sugar prices were increased from 18.7 cents/ lb in 2009 to 27 cents/lb in 2010. World sugar production increased in 2010 along with consumption. Ending stocks did tighten in 2010. Ending stock projections by various organizations for 2011 were lower than previously estimated. World demand for sugar is expected to grow at a similar rate to world supply, resulting in Caribbean sugar prices...

2011 Outlook of the U.S. and World Wheat Industries, 2010-2020 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2010-2020 time period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to remain relatively healthy for the next ten years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong. The price levels in 2010 and early 2011 will not be maintained because they are the result of a small wheat crop in the Former Soviet Union (FSU). It is expected that wheat production in the FSU will return to normal in the future. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to...

2011 Updated Arkansas Global Rice Model AgEcon
Wailes, Eric J.; Chavez, Eddie C..
The Arkansas Global Rice Model is based on a multi-country statistical simulation and econometric framework. The model is disaggregated by five world regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Each region includes country models which have a supply sector, a demand sector, a trade, stocks and price linkage equations. All equations used in this model are estimated using econometric procedures or identities. Estimates are based upon a set of explanatory variables including exogenous macroeconomic factors such as income, population, inflation rate, technology development, and especially, government determined policy variables which reflect the various mechanisms by which countries intervene in their rice sector economy. Individual country...

2C or Not 2C? AgEcon
Guivarch, Celine; Hallegatte, Stephane.
Political attention has increasingly focused on limiting warming to 2°C. However, to date the only mitigation commitments accompanying this target are the so-called Copenhagen pledges, and these pledges appear to be inconsistent with the 2°C objective. Diverging opinions on whether this inconsistency can or should be resolved have been expressed. This paper clarifies the alternative assumptions underlying these diverging view points and explicits their implications. It first gives simple visualizations of the challenge posed by the 2°C target. It then proposes a “decision tree”, linking different beliefs on climate change, the achievability of different policies, and current international policy dynamics to various options to move forward on climate change.

3D models of lamprey corticoid receptor complexed with 11-deoxycortisol and deoxycorticosterone Nature Precedings
Michael E. Baker; Kayla Y. Uh; Paiyuam Asnaashari.
The serum of Atlantic sea lamprey, a basal vertebrate, contains two corticosteroids, 11-deoxycortisol and deoxycorticosterone. Only 11-deoxycortisol has high affinity [Kd~3 nM] for the corticoid receptor [CR] in lamprey gill cytosol. To investigate the binding of 11-deoxycortisol to the CR, we constructed 3D models of lamprey CR complexed with 11-deoxycortisol and deoxycorticosterone. These 3D models reveal that Leu-220 and Met-299 in lamprey CR have contacts with the 17[alpha]-hydroxyl on 11-deoxycortisol. Lamprey CR is the ancestor of the mineralocorticoid receptor [MR] and glucocorticoid receptor [GR]. Unlike human MR and human GR, the 3D model of lamprey CR finds a van der Waals contact between Cys-227 in helix 3 and Met-264 in helix 5. Mutant...
