During the last decade, a debate arose regarding the timing and pattern of the last reconnection of the Black Sea "Lake" with the global ocean. On a geochemical basis, the radiocarbon age of Black Sea "Lake" surface water, during the time of reconnection, was determined to be similar to 8400 C-14 a. BP. Despite the potential bias induced by the hard water effect in lakes, the reconnection age was calibrated without any reservoir age correction, which led to an estimate of similar to 9400 cal a. The timing of the last deglaciation is important to our understanding of the dynamics of large ice sheets and their effects on the Earth's surface. Moreover, the disappearance of the glacial ice sheets was responsible for dramatic increases in freshwater fluxes to the oceans, which probably disturbed the ocean's thermohaline circulation and, hence, global climate. Sea-level increase bear witness to the melting of continental ice sheets, but only two such records - from Barbados and New Guinea corals - have been accurately dated. But these corals overlie active subduction zones, where tectonic movements are large and often discontinuous (especially in New Guinea), so the apparent sea-level records may be contamined by a complex tectonic component. Chloride and delta O-18 compositions of interstitial water extracted from a long sediment core retrieved from the NW coast of the Black Sea allowed us to constrain the main hydrologic changes of the Back Sea during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. Prior to its reconnection with the Mediterranean Sea (through the Marmara Sea) at approximately 9000 calendar yr before present (9 ka cal BP), the Black Sea has evolved as a fresh to brackish water lake. At the time of reconnection, hydrologic changes were drastic. Bottom water salinities changed from a few psu (practical salinity unit) to similar to 22 psu. La méthode de datation par le carbone 14 a permis l'établissement d'une échelle chronologique du Quaternaire Supérieur et a contribué à la découverte de phénomènes insoupçonnés comme l'existence de variations climatiques abruptes et de grande amplitude pendant la dernière période glaciaire et la déglaciation qui l'a terminée. L'effort continu pour comparer les âges carbone 14 avec les âges calendaires a été maintenant étendu au delà de 30 000 ans, même si le nombre de mesures est encore trop petit pour permettre l'établissement d'une courbe de calibration précise au delà des dix mille dernières années. In their comment Hiscott and co-authors adhere rigidly to ages and sources for sedimentary units in the subsurface of the Marmara shelf that they have previously reported in their publications from 2002 through 2007. This adherence is in spite of a superior age-depth model from our 13 m-long sediment core that penetrated deeply into the deposits under consideration and in disregard to the results of subsequent more-detailed and full-coverage mapping of the region under scrutiny. The age revisions are dismissed by the authors of the comment as representing sediments severely disturbed during coring. We rebut this criticism.
