As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). An online toolbox for cover crops and living mulches Organic Eprints

Cover crops and living mulches form an integral component of conservation agriculture promoting soil health and minimising external inputs. The OSCAR Project (Optimising Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotation) aims to improve practices of conservation agriculture in farming systems across Europe. The principal output of the project is to develop a toolbox to make technical and scientific information publically available to farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders. Anpassungsprozesse in der Frühentwicklung von Weizenpopulationen über 11 Generationen an das Anbausystem Organic Eprints

Eine wichtige Anpassung an den ökologischen Anbau ist eine zügige Frühentwicklung und ein Wurzelsystem, das an organische Düngung angepasst ist. Eine Halbdiallelkreuzung aus insgesamt 20 europäischen Winterweizensorten wurde 2001 hergestellt und insgesamt drei Subpopulationen aus neun Hochertragseltern (CY), eine mit 12 Backqualitätseltern (CQ) und eine aus allen Eltern (CYQ) zusammengestellt. Seit der F5 wird Saatgut unter konventionellen und ökologischen Anbaubedingungen in jeweils zwei parallelen Populationen getrennt nachgebaut. Saat jeder Generation wird bei -20o C aufbewahrt. Das EU-Projekt OSCAR (Optimising Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotations): Ergänzende Pflanzen zur Systemoptimierung in der pfluglosen Landwirtschaft: Neue Genotypen gesucht Organic Eprints

In diesem Artikel konnte nur ein sehr kleiner Einblick in das Projekt OSCAR gegeben werden. Inspirationen kommen vor allem aus Südamerika, wo die Direktsaat bereits Standard ist. Die erfolgversprechendsten Arten als Zwischenfrüchte und Untersaaten werden von mehreren Projektpartnern gemeinsam mit beteiligten Landwirten in der Praxis getestet. OSCAR wird jedoch zum Projektende noch keine fertigen Lösungen bieten können. Mit dem sich deutlich wandelnden Klima auch in Deutschland werden Boden- und Wasserschutz immer wichtiger. Dazu tragen die Lösungsansätze von OSCAR bei. Es sind aber bereits einige Folgeprojekte entstanden. Dazu gehört vor allem ein Projekt zur Züchtung von Untersaaten unter den Bedingungen der Minimalbodenbearbeitung.

Effect of Seeding Date of Wheat and Clover Plant Interactions in Cereal Systems with an Associated Cover Crop Organic Eprints

The success of the establishment of living mulch systems in cereals is, among other factors, dependent on the seeding time both of the main crop and the associated crop, which may be planted together or at different seeding times. In this contribution, the results of a series of experiments are summarized, where both the absolute and the relative seeding time of winter wheat as main crop and subterranean clover as associated crop has been varied. Early seeding favored the clover, later seeding the main crop. Competition can be regulated by anticipating the seeding time of one of the components. However, an equilibrated mixed canopy could be obtained by seeding both components together.

Effect of Seeding density on Plant Interactions in Cereal Systems with Associated Cover Crop Organic Eprints

The success of the establishment of living mulch systems in cereals depends, among other factors, on the seeding density of the main crop and the associated crop. A series of experiments with 6 seeding densities of subterranean clover and 2 seeding densities of wheat was performed in southern Germany in order to assess the role of this factor using model systems with wheat and subterranean clover. Increased seeding densities of subterranean clover increased subterranean clover biomass, reduced wheat tiller density, but improved N supply to wheat in the stem elongation stage.

The potential of self-reseeding annual clovers and medics (T. subetrraneum, T. campestre, M. minima, M. orbicularis) as continuous ground cover in living mulch systems with cereals in southern Germany was assessed. It could be shown, that all of the assessed species were winterhardy and were able to re-establish from seed. Competition of the legumes on rye was limited in the first year. The methods for seed-ing cereals into established legume stands have still to be improved.

Cover crops and mulches can be used for increasing sustainability in winter cereal cropping systems. We performed a 2-year field experiment in Central Italy with the aim of finding a suitable spatial arrangement for durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) as a living mulch system in order to provide a high cereal grain yield and a sufficient subclover reseeding following the wheat harvest. Innovative Approaches to Optimize Genetic Diversity for Sustainable Farming Systems of the Future (INSUSFAR): Projektübersicht Organic Eprints

Increasing yield instability due to climate change could be mitigated by higher interand intra crop diversity. During the course of the INSUSFAR project, several questions regarding the impact of more diverse crops on agricultural systems are adressed. To answer these questions, varieties, mixtures, and composite cross populations of wheat will be investigated in field experiments and on-farm. Based on the results, the socio-economic, ecological and yield performance of these varieties and the extent of genetic changes in genetically diverse populations will be tested. In addition, effects of plant breeding on the adaption of varieties to different input levels will be analysed.

Lebendmulchsysteme im Getreideanbau stoßen in Deutschland seit einigen Jahren auf steigendes Interesse, zeigten sich aber wegen der starken Konkurrenz des als Bodenbedecker verwendeten Weißklees als schwer durchführbar. Einjährige Leguminosen sind wegen ihres kurzen, determinierten Vegetationszyklus potentiell besser geeignet, sie können durch Selbstaussaat mehrjährige Bestände bilden. There is widespread concern over the damage caused by modern agriculture to soil structure and the ecosystem services provided. One approach to overcome this problem is conservation agriculture (CA) which aims to maintain soil structure by minimising soil disturbance, maximising soil cover and using crop rotation. However, despite recent legislation supporting minimum tillage and direct seeding, together with the efforts of pioneer farmers, CA is still practised on less than 4% of the agricultural land in Europe. Screening New Legume Species for Use as Cover Crop in Southern Germany Organic Eprints

A screening among more than 800 accessions, belonging to more than 100 species was performed in the frame of an international cooperative research program from 2012 to 2016. Aim of the screening was, to identify new species and suitableaccessions, suitable as cover crops and living mulches in Mediterranean, temperate and more continental climates. In this contribution, results obtained in southern Germany are reported, focusing on potential new cover crops. Several new cover crop species could be identified, which were characterized by high biomass production ad weed suppression, as well as by good seed production. Both species and accessions with early and late growth cycle could be identified.

Screening Non Legume Species for Use as Cover Crop in Mixtures Organic Eprints

Several non-legume species have been tested for their suitability as cover crops, especially as constituent of mixtures with common vetch (Vicia sativa) and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterrananeum) in field trials performed in southern Germany from 2013 to 2016. We present selected results. The highest amounts of biomass were produced by Glebionis segetum, Anethum graveolens and Borago officinalis, which were also able to compete with subterranean clover and common vetch. All other tested species produced less biomass than the two legume species and were outcompeted in mixtures.
