We explore how alternative hypotheses on the degree of mixing among local subpopulations affect statistical inferences on the dynamics and stock assessment of a harvested flatfish population, namely, the common sole population in the Eastern Channel (ICES area VIId). The current paradigm considers a single, well-mixed, spatially homogeneous population with juveniles from all coastal nursery grounds along the French and UK coasts that contribute to a single adult population and one pool of eggs. Biological reference points are important tools for fisheries management. Reference points are not static, butmay change when a population's environment or the population itself changes. Fisheries-induced evolution is one mechanism that can alter population characteristics, leading to "shifting" reference points by modifying the underlying biological processes or by changing the perception of a fishery system. The former causes changes in "true" reference points, whereas the latter is caused by changes in the yardsticks used to quantify a system's status. L’existence d’un impact de la prospection sismique pétrolière sur les rendements journaliers des pêcheurs Vénézuéliens ciblant le vivaneau rouge (Lutjanus purpureus) au large de la Guyane au cours de la période 2002–2012 a été évaluée au cours de cette étude. Les informations recueillies dans les fiches de pêche ont permis de tenir compte de facteurs tels que l’effort de pêche, le secteur et la période de pêche ainsi que la profondeur prospectée. Une fois ces différentes influences prises en considération, l’effet de la co-occurrence d’une campagne de prospection a été testé. Managing fisheries resources to maintain healthy ecosystems is one of the main goals of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. One aspect that has received substantial scientific attention recently is fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). This study describes the spatial distribution of young-of-the-year common sole based on beam trawl surveys conducted in late summer in the coastal and estuarine parts of the Bay of Biscay (France). Previous studies showed that habitat suitability for juvenile common sole varies according to physical factors and notably bathymetry and sediment structure. Nevertheless, the use of these descriptors alone to model habitat suitability led to considerable unexplained variability in juvenile common sole distribution. Reproductive investment in Atlantic cod populations off Newfoundland: Contrasting trends between males and females ArchiMer

Life history theory predicts selection for higher reproductive investment in response to increased mortality among mature individuals. We tested this prediction over the period from 1978 to 2013 for three populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off Newfoundland. These populations were heavily fished for a long period. We considered changes in standardized gonad weight as a proxy for changes in gonadal investment. We accounted for the allometry between gonad and body weight, individual body condition, water temperature, and potential spatial and density-dependent effects. Simulating fish larval drift helps assess the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the meta-population scale (4 assessed stocks), from the southern North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe) on a 26-yr time series, from 1982 to 2007. What is the added value of including fleet dynamics processes in fisheries models? ArchiMer

We develop a spatially and seasonally explicit bioeconomic model with three fleet dynamics processes built in endogenously. The model has been applied to the large French trawlers harvesting a medium-depth demersal stock, North Sea saithe (i.e., pollock, Pollachius virens), and a mix of deepwater species over a 10-year period (1999-2008), and the predictions have been contrasted with observations. The best overall fit was achieved where effort allocation was determined to be 80% by traditions and 20% by economic opportunism and where harvest efficiency increased by 8% a year.
