Acartia tonsa: a species new for the Black Sea fauna IBSS Repository

The presence of Acartia tonsa in Black Sea waters (South Crimean coast, Ukraine) is reported for the first time. A. tonsa may be a recently introduced species in the Black Sea. Morphological features of the adults have been shown by S.E.M.

Delay between immune and nutritional recovery, implications for treatment and discharge of malnourished children : poster IRD

Malnourished children from low income families were hospitalized for a 2-month period in the immune and Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre (CRIN) in Cochabamba (Bolivia). They received a special diet adapted to the form of malnutrition. Nutritional status was determined by daily clinical examination and weekly anthropometrical measurements. Immune status was assessed by weekly ultrasonography of the left lobe of the thymus and monthly determination of T lymphocytes subpopulations. The 2-month longitudinal study showed that normal anthropometric values for discharge (-1 SD of the NCHS weight for height) were resumed after one month of rehabilitation whereas two months were required for a complete immunologic recovery (350 mm2 of thymic area). Immunostimulating effect of zinc supplement during recovery of severe malnourished children IRD

Recovery of normal anthropometric values was observed after one month of rehabilitation in young children suffering from severe protein-energy malnutrition. But one another month was required for immunologic recovery and the children were kept in the rehabilitation ward until nutritional and immunological recovery. To accelerate the immune rehabilitation of the children we investigated the effect of a daily zinc supplementation (2 mg per kg) as an immuno-stimulatory treatment. Réhabilitation immunonutritionnelle d'enfants atteints de malnutrition sévère IRD

Le déficit immunitaire de l'enfant souffrant de malnutrition est connu de longue date mais rarement pris en compte dans le processus de récupération nutritionnelle. Le centre de réhabilitation immunonutritionnelle (CRIN) de Cochabamba (Bolivie) s'est donné comme objectif de restaurer les aspects clinico-nutritionnels et immunologiques lors du traitement d'enfants atteints de malnutrition sévère. Les enfants admis au CRIN sont recrutés parmi ceux qui, âgés de 6 mois à 6 ans, séjournent à l'hôpital materno-infantile. Durant les deux mois de séjour dans le service, ils bénéficient d'un traitement global dispensé par une équipe pluridisciplinaire composée de pédiatres, d'immunologistes, de nutritionnistes, de psychologues et de sociologues. Updating Geographic Distribution of Artemia urmiana GÜNTHER, 1890 (Branchiopoda: Anostraca) in Europe: An Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach IBSS Repository

Artemia urmiana (a species previously considered endemic of Lake Urmia, NW Iran) has been found in Lake Koyashskoe, a hypersaline lake on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). Therefore, this is the first record of A. urmiana in Europe which updates its distribution. The species identification was based on an integrated and interdisciplinary approach using discriminant analysis of the morphometric characters, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular profile analysis. The data derived from the above mentioned approaches converge to significant similarity of the population under investigation with A. urmiana.
