Design, implementation and management of perennial flower strips to promote functional agrobiodiversity in organic apple orchards: A pan-European study Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Cahenzli, Fabian; Steinemann, Beatrice; Jamar, Laurent; Chor Bjørn, Mona; Porcel, Mario; Tasin, Marco; Telfser, Josef; Kelderer, Markus; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Orchards, as intensive cropping systems, often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies for pest control. The implementation of agri-environmental schemes, such as flower strips, could enhance biological control. We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species. In the second and third year after sowing, plant diversity and ground cover between flower strips (FS) in the drive alleys and the spontaneous orchard vegetation in control plots (Cont) were compared in 19 experimental blocks of eight organic apple orchards in six European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of FS was on average 43% higher than in Cont. Multivariate...

Different baits and bait amendments to attract Drosophila suzukii Organic Eprints
Cahenzli, Fabian; Daniel, Claudia.
Drosophila suzukii is a major pest of soft fruits. Baited traps are widely used for monitoring and mass trapping: different commercial baits, different recipes for home-made baits as well as several literature references on attractive compounds are available. In a series of 15 laboratory experiments we compared the attractiveness of different baits for D. suzukii: the commercially available Dros’attract (Biobest Belgium NV) and the Gasser-bait (Biologische Becherfalle für die Kirschessigfliege Drosophila suzukii; Riga AG), a 4-Component-attractant (Cha et al., 2013) and a self-made wine-vinegar-bait (50 % water, 40 % apple cider vinegar, 10 % red wine, 0.05 % acetone, 0.0125 % soap). Furthermore, we tested if different bait amendments (β-Cyclocitral,...

Drosophila suzukii control using Kaolin, lime and rock dusts. Organic Eprints
Strack, Timo; Cahenzli, Fabian; Daniel, Claudia.
The Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is an invasive pest in Europe and North America, infesting various soft-skinned fruits. Because D. suzukii attacks ripening fruits shortly before harvest, only insecticides with short pre-harvest intervals can be applied. Alternatively, kaolin, lime and rock dusts are non-toxic to non-target organisms, but the whitish coating on fruits potentially deters oviposition of D. suzukii. Therefore, we tested oviposition deterrence and insecticidal effects of such substances. Female D.suzukii flies were exposed to treated blueberries under laboratory conditions for 24 hours. Kaolin, clinoptilolite, clinoptilolite + Heliosol (pine-oil based wetting agent) and calcium carbonate significantly reduced oviposition,...

Organic Eprints
Kehrli, Patrik; Cahenzli, Fabian; Daniel, Claudia; Linder, Christian.

Efficacy of organic plant protection programs against Myzus cerasi on cherries Organic Eprints
Cahenzli, Fabian; Daniel, Claudia.
This project evaluated the efficacy of seven different organic plant protection programs against the black cherry aphid Myzus cerasi (MYZUCE) in a low stem cherry orchard. The standard paraffin oil (Weissöl) applied after bud swelling (BBCH 03) significantly reduced the number of infested long shoots and aphid colony size, represented by the number of curled leaves. Additional treatments with Pyrethrum (Pyrethrum FS) and Neem oil (Neem Azal T/S) added no further efficacy. Neem oil and Majestik applied twice showed only limited efficacy. A test oil was clearly less efficient than the standard paraffin oil. Ant baits placed on the stems after bud swelling to prevent ants from promoting aphids offered an interesting, sustainable control approach should for...

Organic Eprints
Kehrli, Patrik; Linder, Christian; Cahenzli, Fabian; Daniel, Claudia.
