Behavioural flexibility and numerous potential sources of introduction for the sacred ibis: causes of concern in western Europe ? Inra
Clergeau, P.; Yésou, P..
In order to examine the dynamics and potential impact of the recently introduced sacred ibis Threskiornis aethiopicus, we review the published and unpublished data and report new information on its distribution in West European countries and particularly in France. This species, which escaped from zoos during the 1990s, is well established and has spread on the Atlantic coast and in Mediterranean region of France, with a mid-winter population reaching ca. 3200 individuals in winter 2004–2005 and ca. 1100 breeding pairs in spring 2005. The species has also escaped from zoological parks in Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal, and feral populations are established in Piedmont (Italy) and in the Canary Islands (Spain). The species dispersing ability...

Flocking behaviour of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) during the day: A gradual gathering to the roost Inra
Clergeau, P..
During winter, gathering of starlings is studied in 3 very different sites in western France. A positive correlation is found between the size of starling flocks and the time of the day.

Geographical range as predictor of spatial expansion of invading birds Inra
Croci, S.; Le Quilliec, P.; Clergeau, P..
Many studies have been carried out on predictive traits, such as geographical range, but most of them were related to introduced species and considered the invasion as a whole. The contrasting results previously obtained suggest that studies should take into account the dynamics of the invasion process (immigration, establishment, spread). We hypothesise that the geographical range reflects the species tolerance to new environments, and is related especially to the establishment and spread of the invasion process. First, data on spontaneous invasive birds in France since 1950 were collected to determine the relation between geographical range and spontaneous invasions of French biogeographical areas. Second, the urban context, assumed to be free of...

Microclimate in communal roost sites of starlings Sturnus vulgaris Inra
Clergeau, P.; Simonnet, E..
Microclimate of 10 roost sites selected by Starlings was measured with minimum thermometers during two winter months. A significative difference between urban and surrounding countryside underlines the advantage to roost in the city.
