Electrical resistivity imaging for detecting soil cracking at the centimetric scale Inra

 Electrical resistivity measurements at high resolution (1.5-cm electrode spacing) were performed to detect, from the soil surface, small cracks developing within the soil. We recorded a vertical electrical pseudo-section in a decimetric undisturbed homogenous soil block (silt loam) for different artificial cracking stages. Because of the unusually reduced electrode spacing associated with an air-dried soil surface, a specific Cu/CuSO4 electrode was designed for precision wet contact at given points. The apparent resistivity measurements of the pseudo-section and the interpreted data inverted by using the Res2Dinv software are discussed. The range of interpreted electrical resistivity associated with cracking is considerable, (from 168 to 2185 {Omega} m)...

Quantification of soil volumes in the Eg & Bt-horizon of an Albeluvisol using image analysis Inra

In this study, we provide a strategy to quantify the effects on soil evolution of driving forces such as human activities or global change. This strategy was developed for situations in which soil evolution resulted in the formation of a complex juxtaposition of soil volumes with distinct properties including soil colours. It is based on image analysis. Our approach proceeds in two steps: (1) to find the minimum sample size over which the soil anisotropy can be neglected and (2) to define a Representative Elementary Volume (REV) of that sample. This approach was developed on the Eg & Bt horizon of a drained Albeluvisol in which three decimetric soil monoliths were sampled at 60, 110 and 210 cm from a drain. The dominant role of structure for solute transport in soil: experimental evidence and modelling of structure and transport in a field experiment Inra

A classical transport experiment was performed in a field plot of 2.5 m2 using the dye tracer brilliant blue. The measured tracer distribution demonstrates the dominant role of the heterogeneous soil structure for solute transport. As with many other published experiments, this evidences the need of considering the macroscopic structure of soil to predict flow and transport. We combine three different approaches to represent the relevant structure of the specific situation of our experiment: i) direct measurement, ii) statistical description of heterogeneities and iii) a conceptual model of structure formation.
